Yes, I saw the original sheet music from many decades ago and the line at the end of the song did say CHILDREN.

If you remember the T.V. show with the character ARCHIE BUNKER, his wife in the show, EDITH, sang AIN'T WE GOT FUN and instead of saying CHILDREN, she said BABIES. (however, I like the word CHILDREN.
