The rats are from the Karni Mata temple in India. Karni Mata was an avatar of the god Durga who asked the death god Yama to reincarnate the son of a storyteller, but he refused. So Karni Mata decided that all male storytellers would be reincarnated as rats to live in her temple until Yama allowed them to be born back into the Charan (storyteller's) clan. It's considered good luck to eat the rat's leftovers 2:10. SO, if only the males get reborn as rats, where do the female storytellers go?

@NicolaWriter Rats are amazingly docile and gentle animals. You're more likely to be bitten by a dog than a rat. I've had rats for 13 years, only 3 bites in that entire time, ALL my own error back in the early days.

They just wouldn't attack a person, they're too intelligent. Only stupid animals resort to biting; rats reason :P

The rats have religious meaning in that a Hindu goddess reincarnates her devotees into rats upon their death. Reincarnated as a rat? God, sometimes you don't come through. The snakes have to do with religious expression by handling representations of satan, fearlessly. This demonstrates their faith and trust in god. Shaving legs is a domestic chore, meaning we're overlooked in what they do for those they love. Would you tell her if the sky was falling? Do you need a woman to look after you, too?

Snake handling or serpent handling is a religious ritual in a small number of Pentecostal churches in the U.S. Do a search for snake handlers. The rats are still a mystery. Perhaps Tori is trying to show a disconnect between humans and nature in some short-circuited way.
