Whatever Domingo may have lacked in power or range, he more than made up for in sheer vocal beauty and musicality. He is a true musician and dramatacist both of which combined to create an outstanding career in the opera which he continues into his 70's, something few other singers have ever matched.
@amusiclover1982 Believe me when I say that this is no insult to Placido. But even in his autobiography, "My First Forty Years" Domingo admits that he lacked power when compared to such greats as Del Monaco, Martinelli, or Caruso. But, I have also been fortunate enough to hear him singing live (Otello), and yes, at times he could not compete with the powerful strains of the orchestra. However, nonetheless, he was surely one of the greatest actor-singers of the last 50 years.
@lewashcliffe I wholeheartedly agree. A man directing an opera in rehearsal once told a principal soloist to "Depart from the text and sing the meaning." Placido Domingo could do that splendidly -- and he did, again and again.
@prairywriter5 I recall someone once wrote of Domingo that he is as much a poet as he is a singer. Perhaps having grown up onstage with his parents, or perhaps of an inborn romance that may have come from his Spanish/Mexican heritage, but Placido seeks to really understand in depth the meaning and colours of the words conveyed by his music. That is what has made him so loved and so popular in so many countries of the world.

Nobody or at least in my opinion is better than Pavarotti in Turandot but just as nobody can equal Pavarotti in that particular opera; nobody can equal Domingo in Tosca or at least not in my opinion,
@truvianni pavarotti never sang in turandot, he just used to sang the aria "nessun dorma", calaf is a dramatic role, pavarotti was a liric tenor, he could not have sung the full opera, so how can you say that he was good at it?? domingo did an excelent job in turandot by the way, one of the best!!
@nachtschatten93 What are you talking about? I just found a CD where he performs the whole role of Calaf in Turandot along with Caballe and Southerland. Domingo was great in everything but for some reason I felt for this opera it was Pavarotti
@truvianni yes, I know, after I wrote my first comment, I realized that I was mistaken, and I'm sorry for that :P, but still I think that Domingo made a better job in the role of Calaf than Pavarotti, Domingo has more power and expression in his voice, but howevr, I have to admit that pavorotti was incredibily good in the high notes, but in general, his voice was to weak to sing Calaf :) that´s my opinion, and I respect yours, that's what makes art so interesting, different opinions

@nachtschatten93 I dont think Pavarotti or Domingo's voice were suited for Turandot. My feeling is most of the recordings that Domingo has ,are enhanced for marketing reasons. The more suited tenors for the role were Corelli, Lauri Volpi, DelMonaco,Fillipeschi,Merli, Martinelli,Tucker,Martinucci,Lazzaro,Cortis&Fleta.I will say that even though Pavarotti was not suited for the role,Pav made Nessun Dorma more popular by ending every concert with the aria.Domingo is a lyric spinto at best.

This is an admirable assessment, one seasoned with observation over time, taking into account the essentials required to see the big picture, namely: the quality of "the instrument" (which is a given), with the accompanying vocal technique and proficiency (which is acquired), and mixing these in with the ever-changing fashions of style and period that make up the inevitable palette of any performing artist. "Depart from the text and sing the meaning!" He tried that, and often reached it.Thanks
No, Placido cannot throw out B4s and C5s (the C5's are quite measured) effortlessly as his stupdous A4s, but there are NOTHING wrong with them. No one in opera has EVER had his musicality or vocal agility - which is pretty remarkable given his voice is a fairly heavy dramatic tenor. He is also perhaps the best actor, ever - unlike Pavarotti (who became a better actor as time passed) who pretty much stayed in one spot even if he happened to be at a relatively thin point in his life. PD=UNIQUE
A wonderful performance from a tenor who owned this role; his top note does not sound as free here as in other recordings, but still a great interpretation.
Bravo Maestro Domingo. This role suited him perfectly. His voice was bigger, and had more shine than comes through on video. I saw him as Don Jose in Carmen about 10 years ago in L.A. He was a generation older than any other singer on stage. And he out sang all of them. Check out my humble recording of this aria. I love comments
I challenge absolutely anyone who criticizes Placido to hear him singing live! I got to do so in Milan for the first time last April, and at the age he is he still makes you tremble! A few notes were off, he may have been warming up in the beginning, but who gives a shit? Is a singer really supposed to be a machine who gives you a mathematical result or an artist who moves you? Think about it!

How sad ! As usual, Domingo throughout the years kept on making the same mistake as related of neglecting to enhance his dull top notesy. All his life he insisted in doing the top notes as the "Domingo's way". His natural charisma and good acting have prevented him from a disaster. Let alone a faithful bunch of women ( " The Domingans" ) who are the ones that if someone says anything bad against him they will shreak : " Who the hell cares, you bastard !. he is so cute !!!!!
Sounding better than usual, Placido! Why not stick to roles that you can handle and stop insulting all of us who own a pair of ears and Verdi himself by trying to sing Otello? Guess that's why you took up conducting.
Those who point out such things as there`s no High Bb or that we was "afonico" simply don´t know nothing about singing and about voices.
I agree with moorfan1 and shawdaman. A singer's value does not lie in one or a handful of notes in his register. That is a very limited and immature way of analyzing any musician. Domingo is a heartfelt performer with a gorgeous tenor voice. He debuted brilliantly and managed to recover from subsequent vocal difficulty, re-build his technique, and have a lasting international career.
''A singer's value does not lie in one or a handful of notes in his register.'' Yes it does, if a tenor does not have much to say in high register it surely makes him a more infamous tenor for it would be better for him to hit those notes like a siren then opposite. Of course, it's not the only detectable element in an evaluation of one's performance but it can mess up the whole if it's lousy.
@sopranosd No, Placido cannot throw out B4s and C5s (the C's are quite measured) effortlessly as his stupdous A4s, but there are NOTHING wrong with them. No one in opera has EVER had his musicality or vocal agility - which is pretty remarkable given his voice is a fairly heavy dramatic tenor. He was also perhaps the best actor, ever - unlike Pavarotti (who became a better actor as time passed) who pretty much stayed in one spot even if he happened to be at a relatively thin point in his life.
@LouisMenchise EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE OPINION BUT TO SAY HE IS A (FAIRLY HEAVY DRAMATIC TENOR) IS REALLY NOT ACCURATE.HE DOES HAVE A BEAUTIFUL QUALITY OF VOICE WITH VELVET TONES . I SAW HIM IN I PAGLIACI ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO. THE LYRIC PASSAGES WERE FINE BUT HE WAS HARDLY AUDIBLE IN THE PASSAGIO&UP.I U WUD LIKE TO VIEW SOME DRAMATIC VOICES TRY DELMONACO ZENATELLO DEMURO PAOLI VINAY&2 SPINTO VOICES THAT ARE MORE DRAMATIC THAN DOMINGOS ARE CORELLI&TUCKER WHICH HAD NO PROBLEM BEING HEARD ENJOY
@sugarbist I probably should have said, "somewhat heavy." Definitely not a spinto. I can't take DelMonaco's idiomatic phrasing. He sounds like a robot. He couldn't sing piano to save his life. Corelli was amazing for a very short period of his career. He eschewed training, and it showed.
@LouisMenchise I would say that PD is a lyric spinto tenor with a fine quality thats not very audible in the House. He has always had problems with his high notes&squeezes&squashes his tones.never does mezza voce or diminuendo&sings fortissimo most of the time.MDM has impeccable diction&beautiful phrasing adhearing to the music most of the time. The 1950s were great years for Del Monaco. He does sing LYRIC in BALLO&does sing PIANO in FORZA arias which are really wonderful to listen to .CONTINUED
@LouisMenchise But Del Monaco voice production was really geared to sing Fortissimo&it was a HUGE voice in the opera THAT EVEN THRILLED HIS CRITICS.Just listen to Jerome Hines interview. When u referred to PD as a dramatic , iwasjust sighting some singers that really belong in that category.Your right hes is like a ROBOT, He could call on his voice for almost anything Never squeesing squashing tones &every phase was consistent.the voice was all even from the botton to the top never thinning out.
@LouisMenchise Corelli started singing a little late around age 31about1951-52 and his vocal decline started around 1968to 72.that still a pretty good stretch.Hehad several signature roles.Chenier Turandot Trovatore Polliuto Ernani Don Carlo Tosca Carmen&also had the abilityto sing mezza voce, diminuendo& or piano as you say.Even if he lasted a short 18-22 yrs.his greatness should not be diminished because of longevity I saw him inTrovatore& he was PHENOMINALIi never feLT this way about DOMINGO
@LouisMenchise That was good for PD BUT HE EVENTUALLY WOULD HAVE SURFACED ANYWAY. There was a little excitement or mystiche because of Corellis stage fright. Many times the public would wonder if he would appear or cancel at the last minute or if he did appear , how well would he sing. This was more evident in the mid 1960s and up.ENJOY DOMINGO its good for your soul. Try LISTENING TO VASCO CAMPAGNANO&Danielle Barioni. I think they are wonderful. Enjoy

This just popped up automatically on a playlist on youtube where I was listening to the best of the best, Mario Del Monaco. Where does Domingo get his reputation - dearth of reputable tenors in the present age? No wonder Birgit Nilsson made him the first recipient of her posthumous memorial award - GagggHHHH! ARGGGGhHHH!
Thank you for appreciating the beauty of art instead of looking for flaws. I feel like anyone complaining on this and any thread is simply looking for reasons to complain. Just sit back and enjoy and if you don't like it, don't listen to it. You don't have to.

@malfada22: agreed 100%. The whole thing is pretty strained; and then that Bb is downright ugly and hoarse. Of course, this is nothing unusual for him.
The only thing that is nothing unusual is the completely unfair and incredibly fashionable current trend of laying into Domingo. By those who have never heard him live, at that. I imagine once he's dead, the perpetual critics will lay off a bit, or maybe lay off judging careers based mainly off of Youtube. It's easy to hear "strained" when you already have your mind made up that it will be "strained". Talk about a broken record.
I have spoken with a number of people who have heard him live who were disappointing. Recordings now, particularly high-quality live ones, are good enough to render an accurate judgment. I acknowledge however that they are not the whole story.
"It's easy to hear "strained" when you already have your mind made up that it will be "strained""
It's also easy to hear "wonderful" when you already have your mind up that it will be "wonderful." I don't hate Domingo but he is often vastly overrated.
I am one who heard him live (twice) who was NOT disappointed. Agreed here that this was not his best Bb ever, but keep in mind that the years 1983-85 were a time of vocal difficulty for him. His value as an artist is not a simple matter of Bb or not. His upper register was always a little difficult for him, but I can counter-post many examples of fantastic top notes. There's no point in arguing though..you either like him or dont. :-)

Good comment. It's not the mere matter of great top register or not; I agree. I don't hate him, but I do prefer to listen to those tenors who did not have the problems he did above, say, a high A, particularly in the Italian rep. which typically calls for a 'brighter' sound and freer top notes. He doesn't do enough good things (for me) to make up for his technical issues. But that's just me, lot's of people love him, many don't. Just in terms of voice I think he's often overrated. ;) cheers!
@moorfan1 I HAD TRIED TO LIKE DOMINGO FOR YEARS, BASICLY FOR HIS FINEQUALITY OF VOICE. I SAW HIM IN PAGLIACCI ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO.HIS LYRIC SINGING WAS FINE BUT HE WAS HARDLY AUDIBLE IN ANYTHING ABOVE THE PASSAGIO. HE LEFT OUT THE 2ND B NATURAL IN NO PAGLIACCO NON SON. HE HARDLY DOES ANY MEZZA VOCE.HE HAS SUNG OVER 130 DIFFERENT ROLES BUT YET HE DOES NOT HVE A SIGNATURE ROLE.LIKE TUCKER DELMONACO CORELLI PAVAROTTI YET IT SEEMS HE IS REGARDED AS 1 OF THE BEST TENORS EVER.I DONT GET IT BUT ENJOY.
@ShawDAMAN Show me some recordings of another tenor who is ranked as high or higher then Domingo who had a as big or bigger problem with high notes then him. I simply never get the lust to sing after hearing Placido, that instead I get from hearing Björling, Pavarotti, Merli, Pertile, Del Monaco, Corelli, Bonisolli, Wunderlich, Gedda, Gigli, Tucker or the wunderfull young Di Stefano
One of the great Cavaradossi's. This is one of those marvelous arias that leads itself to both lyric and dramatic tenors: in the sweet, sublime, it's Gigli and DiStefano, with Parvarotti squrely in the midst of that range. In the dramatic, it's Caruso, and yes, Placido is up there with the master. A great, powerful, resonate, emotional Cavaradossi. His acting and passion make Placido one for the ages.

so much emotion, so much passion.

Again : it's sad

Sounding better than usual, Placido! Why not stick to roles that you can handle and stop insulting all of us who own a pair of ears and Verdi himself by trying to sing Otello? Guess that's why you took up conducting.

there are no flaws...
Those who point out such things as there`s no High Bb or that we was "afonico" simply don´t know nothing about singing and about voices.
gonzalordm 1 year ago 2

You should start a 'Placido Domingo can't hit Bb anti-fan club.'
I'm sure you'll have the most fashionable parties.
hymnofashes 2 years ago 2
I agree with moorfan1 and shawdaman. A singer's value does not lie in one or a handful of notes in his register. That is a very limited and immature way of analyzing any musician. Domingo is a heartfelt performer with a gorgeous tenor voice. He debuted brilliantly and managed to recover from subsequent vocal difficulty, re-build his technique, and have a lasting international career.

@sopranosd Sorry, but when you're a "tenor" and you don't even have a Bb?

''A singer's value does not lie in one or a handful of notes in his register.'' Yes it does, if a tenor does not have much to say in high register it surely makes him a more infamous tenor for it would be better for him to hit those notes like a siren then opposite. Of course, it's not the only detectable element in an evaluation of one's performance but it can mess up the whole if it's lousy.
castorp278 1 year ago
@sopranosd well said, well said, completely agree
spydergoalie35 1 year ago
@sopranosd No, Placido cannot throw out B4s and C5s (the C's are quite measured) effortlessly as his stupdous A4s, but there are NOTHING wrong with them. No one in opera has EVER had his musicality or vocal agility - which is pretty remarkable given his voice is a fairly heavy dramatic tenor. He was also perhaps the best actor, ever - unlike Pavarotti (who became a better actor as time passed) who pretty much stayed in one spot even if he happened to be at a relatively thin point in his life.
LouisMenchise 1 year ago
@LouisMenchise EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE OPINION BUT TO SAY HE IS A (FAIRLY HEAVY DRAMATIC TENOR) IS REALLY NOT ACCURATE.HE DOES HAVE A BEAUTIFUL QUALITY OF VOICE WITH VELVET TONES . I SAW HIM IN I PAGLIACI ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO. THE LYRIC PASSAGES WERE FINE BUT HE WAS HARDLY AUDIBLE IN THE PASSAGIO&UP.I U WUD LIKE TO VIEW SOME DRAMATIC VOICES TRY DELMONACO ZENATELLO DEMURO PAOLI VINAY&2 SPINTO VOICES THAT ARE MORE DRAMATIC THAN DOMINGOS ARE CORELLI&TUCKER WHICH HAD NO PROBLEM BEING HEARD ENJOY
sugarbist 1 year ago
@sugarbist I probably should have said, "somewhat heavy." Definitely not a spinto. I can't take DelMonaco's idiomatic phrasing. He sounds like a robot. He couldn't sing piano to save his life. Corelli was amazing for a very short period of his career. He eschewed training, and it showed.
LouisMenchise 1 year ago
@LouisMenchise I would say that PD is a lyric spinto tenor with a fine quality thats not very audible in the House. He has always had problems with his high notes&squeezes&squashes his tones.never does mezza voce or diminuendo&sings fortissimo most of the time.MDM has impeccable diction&beautiful phrasing adhearing to the music most of the time. The 1950s were great years for Del Monaco. He does sing LYRIC in BALLO&does sing PIANO in FORZA arias which are really wonderful to listen to .CONTINUED
sugarbist 1 year ago
@LouisMenchise But Del Monaco voice production was really geared to sing Fortissimo&it was a HUGE voice in the opera THAT EVEN THRILLED HIS CRITICS.Just listen to Jerome Hines interview. When u referred to PD as a dramatic , iwasjust sighting some singers that really belong in that category.Your right hes is like a ROBOT, He could call on his voice for almost anything Never squeesing squashing tones &every phase was consistent.the voice was all even from the botton to the top never thinning out.
sugarbist 1 year ago
@LouisMenchise Corelli started singing a little late around age 31about1951-52 and his vocal decline started around 1968to 72.that still a pretty good stretch.Hehad several signature roles.Chenier Turandot Trovatore Polliuto Ernani Don Carlo Tosca Carmen&also had the abilityto sing mezza voce, diminuendo& or piano as you say.Even if he lasted a short 18-22 yrs.his greatness should not be diminished because of longevity I saw him inTrovatore& he was PHENOMINALIi never feLT this way about DOMINGO
sugarbist 1 year ago
@sugarbist He also had terrible bouts of stage fright. Domingo made his debut at the Met because Corelli was "sick."
LouisMenchise 1 year ago
@LouisMenchise That was good for PD BUT HE EVENTUALLY WOULD HAVE SURFACED ANYWAY. There was a little excitement or mystiche because of Corellis stage fright. Many times the public would wonder if he would appear or cancel at the last minute or if he did appear , how well would he sing. This was more evident in the mid 1960s and up.ENJOY DOMINGO its good for your soul. Try LISTENING TO VASCO CAMPAGNANO&Danielle Barioni. I think they are wonderful. Enjoy

@malfada22: agreed 100%. The whole thing is pretty strained; and then that Bb is downright ugly and hoarse. Of course, this is nothing unusual for him.
ShawDAMAN 2 years ago
The only thing that is nothing unusual is the completely unfair and incredibly fashionable current trend of laying into Domingo. By those who have never heard him live, at that. I imagine once he's dead, the perpetual critics will lay off a bit, or maybe lay off judging careers based mainly off of Youtube. It's easy to hear "strained" when you already have your mind made up that it will be "strained". Talk about a broken record.
Tralfamadoro 2 years ago 3
I have spoken with a number of people who have heard him live who were disappointing. Recordings now, particularly high-quality live ones, are good enough to render an accurate judgment. I acknowledge however that they are not the whole story.
"It's easy to hear "strained" when you already have your mind made up that it will be "strained""
It's also easy to hear "wonderful" when you already have your mind up that it will be "wonderful." I don't hate Domingo but he is often vastly overrated.
ShawDAMAN 2 years ago
Excuse me, I meant to say "who were disappointED."
ShawDAMAN 2 years ago
I am one who heard him live (twice) who was NOT disappointed. Agreed here that this was not his best Bb ever, but keep in mind that the years 1983-85 were a time of vocal difficulty for him. His value as an artist is not a simple matter of Bb or not. His upper register was always a little difficult for him, but I can counter-post many examples of fantastic top notes. There's no point in arguing though..you either like him or dont. :-)
moorfan1 2 years ago 3

Good comment. It's not the mere matter of great top register or not; I agree. I don't hate him, but I do prefer to listen to those tenors who did not have the problems he did above, say, a high A, particularly in the Italian rep. which typically calls for a 'brighter' sound and freer top notes. He doesn't do enough good things (for me) to make up for his technical issues. But that's just me, lot's of people love him, many don't. Just in terms of voice I think he's often overrated. ;) cheers!
ShawDAMAN 2 years ago
@moorfan1 I HAD TRIED TO LIKE DOMINGO FOR YEARS, BASICLY FOR HIS FINEQUALITY OF VOICE. I SAW HIM IN PAGLIACCI ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO.HIS LYRIC SINGING WAS FINE BUT HE WAS HARDLY AUDIBLE IN ANYTHING ABOVE THE PASSAGIO. HE LEFT OUT THE 2ND B NATURAL IN NO PAGLIACCO NON SON. HE HARDLY DOES ANY MEZZA VOCE.HE HAS SUNG OVER 130 DIFFERENT ROLES BUT YET HE DOES NOT HVE A SIGNATURE ROLE.LIKE TUCKER DELMONACO CORELLI PAVAROTTI YET IT SEEMS HE IS REGARDED AS 1 OF THE BEST TENORS EVER.I DONT GET IT BUT ENJOY.
sugarbist 1 year ago

MrDerere1 2 years ago
andyroma72 2 years ago
