  • Actually gave me goosebumps when i heard this. Superb.

  • He was crying. What a great song.

  • @Tyrannobenji101 He said he was crying because when the crowd started singing along he could see the love in their eyes for the song, and it was too much for him.

  • doesn't get much better then this, fabulous job done by Andre and his orchestra, the emotion of the song is written all over his face and in the tears he shed while playing.

  • I am in American and my band played this song and I just absolutely fell in love with! Wish it was more popular here!

  • Proud to be an Aussie.

  • anyone else notice some dodgy intonation at @2:23 ?

  • Music is the universal language of the soul. Andre teaches us to think beyond and find a world peace.

  • What a great talent ! Andre plays the music like an Angel.

  • My lat grandfather was a U.S. WWII vet, who fought in the south pacific. One of his best friends was an Australian soldier who was killed in action. Whenever grandpa heard this song he would cry.

  • @boy18inva I can certainly understand that, it is a touching melody and there seems to be a lot of affection for Australians in the US. No one seems to fully understand it but at least some of it relates back to the war and many Americans feel that Australians still retain a lot of appreciation and loyalty from those days.

  • What is important what his audience thinks, and by the looks of it they enjoyed it very much. Good entertainment as good as you can get!

  • Thank you. Keep on singing your hearts out. They can't take that away- very nice.

  • There is nothing more beautiful than to see a musician truly connect and feel their music and let their emotions shine through.. this was very beautiful!

  • AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!

  • @Kevin2134

    Oi! Oi! Oi!

  • That girl at 1:33 looks so sweet!

  • @decospeco; Your original comment is as follows: " I cant believe people actually listen to this crap. So boring and plain. It is no wonder anyone with half a brain avoids his music like the plague". The big question is: Why were you even listening to it in the 1st place? I don't go to music sites that I dislike and then slam the music. If I don't like the music I just go to some I do like. What you did was infantile, childish, and hateful. Therefor you are a hater.

  • @deathtosmurfs - yes I hate this stuff and hence I am a hater. Though not so much of a hater as to say 'You are a turd sucking hater and you really should have yourself sterilized before you reproduce.' Settle down. Haven't had the opportunity to graduate yet, my course is long.

  • @decospeco I find it etremely funny that you called my comments 'raging'. All I did was call you out for the hater that you clearly are. Mr. Rieu graduated from the Brussels Royal Conservatory with Premier Prix honors. That's the equilvalent to Magna Cum Laud in an american university. Since then he has won tons of honors around the world for his playing and conducting. Have you graduated from anywhere with any kind of honors? His Waltzing Matilda is schmaltzy, but at least he spreads joy.

  • @deathtosmurfs It's extremely funny that you rage at me for posting John Butler Trio videos and you have a whinge about the greats of reggae being better. At least JBT has some artistic merit whereas this (Andre) is just pastiche of a proper orchestra.

@Samy0619 No I wouldn't do that, there is a difference between criticism and telling a person how to do something. Andre no doubt has technical skill, but technical skill never made a compelling, original musician. Haters gonna hate.

  • @decospeco123; I went to your youtube site again, just to give you the benefit of the doubt about anything insulting I might have said about you. I am sorry that I have to tell you that my original impression was correct. You are a turd sucking hater and you really should have yourself sterilized before you reproduce.

  • yep

  • @deathtosmurfs, @Samy0619

It's kitsch pure and simple. It is so overdone, everything about the performance is hyperbole. See it's funny that you call something derivative when pretty much all music is derivative anyway. Criticism is not dependent on the talent of criticiser, nor is it any less valid just because I can't play the Violin.

@Legendarybard : Thanks I am pretty edgy, some of my friends even call me a hipster.

  • @decospeco123

So... what you are saying is, I can just go and tell president of united states, how to run the country? because my view is just as good as him right?.. even though I have no prior experience nor knowledge on national politics whatsoever, just because I said so, it should be valued as high as any others right? Does not depend on the talent, nor the ability to understand the complexity of an event.

  • He has no reason to apologize for crying. This is a truly touching version. The unofficial Australian national anthem and for those down under it means so much

  • @ decospeco123 : I just went to your youtube site. The stuff you have posted is, except for the reggae number, repititious, derivitive, boring and the kind of crap any tekno-dork can put together in their mama's basement. Even the reggae bit you posted is worthless compared to the true reggae greats like Marley or Cliff.

  • @deathtosmurfs Haters gonna hate.

  • I can't believe people actually listen to this crap. So boring and plain. It is no wonder that anyone with half a brain avoids his music like the plague.

  • @decospeco123

You're so edgy; what a well thought out and constructive post. In all seriousness, you should really consider thinking out how you phrase things before giving out your opinion. It's alright to not enjoy a song, but you make yourself sound foolish. I'm sure someone out there would think your taste in music is "crap" too, so try to be considerate.

  • @decospeco123

Tell you what mate. YOU play better than that, and I will take your word for it. Just sitting around blabbering things to yourself is not considered as criticism.

Second, please explain a bit more clearly the reasons for you to believe that this is actually "crap".

  • Unbelievably Beautiful....heals my heart!

  • that's IT!

  • Thank you for this beautiful song and your talent. Bravo. Fosterfields

  • Thank you for this beautiful song and your talent. Bravo. fosterfields

  • you have just witnessed the cheesiest man on planet earth

  • @thesliotars -but we don't know You?

  • This is such a great song. makes me glad to be an aussie, just wish it was our national anthem.

  • @madwalrus9998 I wish it was too. But i don't think I could handle almost crying at every school assembly thinking of this rendition. :)

  • i remember as a kid making numerous parodies of this song.... never realised its value :P

  • i don't like the song very much, but i am moved to see so many people moved - the power of music - be blessed, andre rieu

  • I dont know. I always dreamed of dancing to this song with my fiance, that was until she up and left me one day with no warning, explanation. Idk that i can watch this anymore.. I love her so.

  • @medievalman86 I am so sorry for you. It might take some time, but some day you will be able to listen to this again.

  • This is why "Waltzing Matilda" should be our national anthem. Look at how proudly every single person in the audience is singing it.

  • @BobGeorgeAU I'm American. So it's not for me to say. But I too was touched by how the audience sang their hearts out here. How can you not be? And it is a truly, truly beautiful tune.

  • Briliant. NOT flat. Don't forget, this is a live recording, not a studio environment! don't let your jealousy cloud your judgement.

  • This song brings back so many memories from my childhood in australia... I miss all my friends there. I now live in Canada but i will go back there one day to visit.

  • I love your violin playing, I am nine and am learning violin myself.

  • Karjan, Rieu and Bernstein are my favorites

  • Magnificent just doesnt seem to cut it.

  • A 1667 Stradivarius speaking to a lot of hearts.

  • He's completely flat at 2:23. Sounds awful. He isn't a very good violinist.

  • @vissi87

He's not flat at all....it's a key change! Any decent musician would recognise that. Fair enough if you don't like his style of music, but if that is the case, don't watch videos of his. Take your hate somewhere else.

  • @emilylime2006 it isn't a key change. He's bloody flat. It isn't "hate", I don't hate anyone. It's just frustration that I consider myself a better violinist than he is yet he is so adorned for playing such simple little tunes, out of tune as well. It just annoys me.

  • @vissi87 It may not be hate, but it IS an obviously seething envy, which is a pretty childish emotion, albeit a common one amongst people so busy nursing their perpetually bruised egos that they can't figure out that Rieu is a lot more than a violinist and the popularity of some of these simple tunes, and therefore of artists who aren't too full of themselves to play and celebrate them, stems in large part from their very simplicity, which allows them to go "straight from one heart to another"

  • @vissi87 Meanwhile, supposedly sophisticated "virtuoso pieces" are often emotionally barren. And any top player ought to accept that you have to know a fair amount about an instrument to appreciate the way a top musician negotiates a difficult piece. So if the man on the street isn't cheering, it's because he's probably too worried about making the next car payment to spend time learning which violin pieces require advanced musicianship and why.

  • @BedBugAcres I don't think that is a good attitude you have. Are you saying that people need to be skilled in music to appreciate the likes of Bach, Vivaldi etc? It's as plain as day how difficult it is to play this music and it really does lift the soul up to another level. It is there for everyone to appreciate, not the few people who are able to play them themselves. And they are certainly not emotionally barren, it is artwork. If the man on the street isn't cheering he certainly ought to be.

  • @vissi87 Good grief. I said that "virtuoso pieces are OFTEN emotionally barren" and that the "popularity of SOME of these simple tunes ... stems in LARGE PART from their very simplicity". IOW, I was reacting with proper moderation to YOUR dismissive attitudes towards simplicity and apparent belief that the world owes you more respect that Rieu gets because of your claimed (though of course unproven) technical superiority. Technical acumen for its own sake doesn't reach people and you not only ..

  • @vissi87 ...don't understand Rieu, but don't understand the psychology of music if you feel popularity and acclaim should correlate tightly with technical proficiency demonstrated via the complexity of what is being played. Of course everyone can figure out that a Bach fugue is more complex than, say, the melody line of Greensleeves, and much of Bach is widely appreciate, though not necessarily more so than Greensleeves and most of it no doubt less.

  • @BedBugAcres That said, Waltzing Matilda is a beautiful piece of music, and I don't want to detract from that. Perhaps this is the wrong Rieu video to be having this discussion.

  • Reminds me of my friend William, immigrated to Australia, :-(

  • I am Czech, but I love Australia and all around it so much! My friend is Oz and she invited me to her country, if I once have time! I wanna go there! Waltzing Matilda touches me so much! The real anthem of Oz in my opinion! I know all the lyrics by heart lol :-D

    Greetings from Czech Republic

  • @ozzyguy67 well if you check again she actually is about half a second out of time with the ochestra so maybe they have a sound issue with the mics or something. But she does look out of time.

  • Ein Traum . .

  • 1:34 <3

  • What makes many critics hate Andre Rieu is that unlike them, he actually was able to break away from the traditional "approach" of many classical music performers, He revolutionized the orchestra in a way that made the present generation more appreciative of it.

  • I only can say: "WOW" :'-) It's such a great song for a great Country, and so emotional!

    Best WIshes from Germany

  • @CornyCornny

    Australia >>>> Austria :p

  • That women at 0:46 looks as if shes singing in her own time lol.

Very nice song and very nicely played.

  • Fantastic.

  • Boo Hoo!!!!

As an ex pat Australian listening to that just filled me with tears of nostalgia.

    Oh the memories.!!!

  • He is a wonderful musican, must be wonderful if you have so much talent that you can touch the hearts of so many people around the world.

  • Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda

"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me"

And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,

"You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me".

I love the lyrics as well. LOL!

  • I just bought this DVD yesterday & I love this song and he's crying, WHY?

    Please tell me!

  • "I'm so ashamed," Rieu says. "I'm a professional. Crying on stage is not done. But I couldn't help myself. Firstly, it's a magnificent, beautiful song that always touches me," he says. "Secondly, I worked very hard to put together a show for my Australian fans. It was the biggest stage on earth, so, for me, it was a big risk. But it worked. "There were 38,000 people in front of me, enjoying the concert, smiling. It was all too much for me."

  • Thanks a lot Ccvanl for replying my comment. I'm practising the song today. I'm so proud of it!

  • @Ccvanl

Well you should see some vids of Blind Guardians "Bards song"

Another professional who cant deal with his emotions from time to time.

But hey if you succeed to touch so many hearts dont be surprised they touch yours. After all we are all humans :)

  • @Ccvanl

I am italian, I am an old man, I never cry, but when I hear this wonderful song I cry

  • @rossandfaker

Then you, sir are a good man.

  • It was lovely to see you shedding tears while playing Waltzing Matilda. It makes me cry too. My mum used to sing it and she is dead for 50 years now but I remember her singing it. It is a very moving tune and you played it so beautifully. Love you and your music. Long may you go on

  • @Ccvanl Hell, I'm a 54-yr-old guy from Tennessee & I'M sittin' here sobbin' away like a little girl, too...Ain't NOTHIN' wrong w/that, in my book....But I've been a fan of Australia & "WM" nearly all my life, too...

  • @HermanMuda -- Making others joyful and sharing it with them is far from shame - it' deeper love for your work!

  • One of many highlights of this concert in Australia. The interaction, energy and positiveness is inspiring and heart-warming. Great to witness.

  • Just saw the whole show André Rieu in Australia, (on tv) and the man who some foolishly call arrogant had tears in his eyes playing this musical gem, but hen who hadn't?

  • No way that he is arrogant.. on a dutch show he recently said that his wife made a remark about him regarding him not making profit, he said:

"She said, you are the only person who makes 83million dollars, and still manages to lose money on it!"

All because he put all his money in his decor and his musicians :), he actually lost money to australia and said it was worth ever penny!

  • Aussie faces - old, young - male, female - dark, light - Dear God how beautiful... Bedtime, Cc - just had to listen one more time.

Question for all you young folks out there in YouTube land: What do hydrogen bombs and True Love have in common? Watch the 1959 black and white (filmed mostly in Melbourne) classic, "On the Beach." Waltzing Matilda will tell you the answer.

  • Hey Cc, It's lunchtime - do you want to send me back to work in tears? As you know, I'm a Yank, but I left part of my soul on the cliffs overlooking the ocean near Coogee Beach, Australia. That chunk of my soul is still there in my "other" country, and you dearly touched and awakened it with the sweet strains of Andre's violin. Mercy, this moves me... The last time I heard, one out of four Aussies still considers this their national anthem. The Aussie hunk of my soul sure does. Thanks, Cc:)
