Thank you so much for this sublime version of Das Lied von der Erde. How fortunate we are to have such a magnificent piece of music preserved for us. Christina Ludwig is at her very best here.
God almighty, is there anything that can reduce a listener to a mass of something or other so easily, after that last "Ewig?" OMG!
I have recording of Hampson with Tilson-Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony which I bought because I have always preferred the baritone rather than the contralto on this work, but I confess that Ludwig absolutely sparkles with this reading of "Das Lied." She was just incredible, in intonation, in dynamics, in just pouring her heart and soul into this. BRAVO!
@flylooper Amen to your comment. Christa Ludwig gives me goosebumps. Her voice seems to sail off into deep space, that eternity which Mahler was drawn in to, and in to which so much of his music draws us also.
I watched this over again after reading your comment. And it's the same reaction. Ludwig and Bernstein just nailed this piece. I need to get a recording of it. the whole tone clarinet scale at 5:45 and what follows (the tutti section) just kills me.
You are spot on on your description of her voice trailing off into eternity.
Top 5 singers of the 20th century... Luciano, Enrico, Kirsten, Pinza, and this angel... that is my ballot! :) (so many worthy candidates)

Heavenly! I could listen all day. So glad I had the opportunity to perform this recently with 2 excellent soloists.
