The burst plate shut-off systems were mandated AFTER Scott's accident. Before then, only a couple of cars had them. The system was developed by the Worsham's.
anyone who takes part in any type of racing is putting their life on the line each and every time they step into their race car. Its just all part of the sport.
The brakes were fine. Scott was knocked unconscious by the concussion of the engine explosion, and was unable to deploy the chutes,or work the handbrake The improvements of safety didn't just stop with shortening the track for the Fuel Cars..a burst-panel shut-off system was also mandated. In the event of an explosion, the wiring on the burst-panels (either on the blower or on the body) breaks...this automatically deploys the chutes, kills the magneto, and closes the fuel valve.
@thevmanvj His chutes did deploy an instant before the engine blew up and they got burnt to shit an instant after the engine blew up. They did nothing to slow the car down from +300mph, If that is not a catastrophic failure of the breaking system then I do not know the definition of catastrophic failure. He was coasting down the track cutting off fuel and killing the spark would have done nothing to prevent this because a blown engine does not burn fuel.
I was referring to the carbon fiber brakes that were controlled by the handbrake. If Scott got on the handbrake the tires would've been bouncing...they weren't. As for a blown engine burning fuel that is not even remotely accurate. The compression is very low,no more than 7.25-1, with only 3 rings, so a fair portion of fuel (pumping 150+ gpm),blows past the pistons, and into the pan, diluting that thick SAE-70 wt oil with Nitro. If you kick out a connecting rod...you have a bomb!
@thevmanvj how would that have kept his engine from blowing to high hell? You even said it yourself "in the event of an explosion" that system would have closed the fuel lines and cut all power to the spark plugs after the engine blew up, how would that have helped him at all?
@thevmanvj not only did he lose the chutes the expolosion seperated the chasis from the car body, the brakes on those cars don't work for shit when there is no downforce on the chasis. He lost all his brakes that is why you do not see the tires bouncing.
They all know the risks, and they decide it is worth it. It's not an accident or a tragedy, its the inevitable outcome of the way he decided to live his life. He didnt go out there to be safe, he went out there to race.
Frankly, I'm not sad that he died. I'm happy that he won.
@johnkitchbitch considering that NO top fuel cars run a Chevy engine, your statement means nothing. They all run an engine based entirely on the Chrysler 426 HEMI.
@ProfessorIgor exactly, he is saying he wants to only run a chevy because he does not want to own a dodge or chrysler and have something similar to this happen, even though it is highly unlikely since no one uses nitro on the streets
@ProfessorIgor I'm sure that its running a Toyota celica engine, jackass. These engines are based on 426 hemi engines but are bored and stroked to 500 cubes instead
@ocsurfer23 you don't get sarcasm, do you ? notice I put Toyota Celica in quotes ?? In reality, the engines they run are based on the 426 hemi, but there's no boring or stroking of anything. These are entirely purpose built, BILLET aluminum block engines. There isn't a stock part on these cars. Not one bolt, nut or washer. So before you get all huffy calling me a jackass, READ my comments twice so they have time to sink in, m'kay ?

It looks like his engine blows disabling the brakes/parachute, its like he totally over runs the track unable to stop and he hits the wall? is that right? Jeez..poor guy, what a terrible accident....RIP Scott.
@Draxindustries1 Dude, I guess you think your comment is so great that you had to post it on at least 2 videos on Scott Kalitta's fatal accident. Are you proud of writing about a guy's arms ripped off and a blower rammed up his "arse"?? Do you really think you added something of value to this conversation? You might want to take a hard look at yourself and your actions. And you're 47 years old, too?? Time to grow up, sir.
@naderchaser Just looked at this and dont know a thing about it. im not even remotely interested in drag racing and have made no such comments even though its appearing under my username. It appears theres also other bad taste comments on other videos too.
Before you say someone else has used my computer etc, i'm the only one who has access to it so it would appear youtube is just yet another insecure site....
What a day...I was in the NHRA press box suite right behind the starting line that day just eating and drinking myself to boredom when this happened...My dad is Bill Stephens, and we were both beside ourselves when we heard the news. Rest in peace.
@georgegrasser I've been around drag racing since 1966. I truly do not believe that even a small percentage of the crowds that watch it want to see a wreck. Perhaps that's the case in circle-track racing....I don't know, and I hope not. But drag race fans, both men and women....just love to hear the sounds and see the sights of machines running at their limits. Drag racing fans are also the most docile and respectful fans, too. Only in drag racing can spectators walk up to the big name cars.
georgegrasser - Different people have a different idea of fun. Chess is your thing, but it isn't ours. Respect the way others choose to spend their time.
this is y u r a loser and do nuthing, i am a drag racer also and i know its dangerous but its a sport i love, anybody that does race loves it too, so u can just stfu and play a real mans sport
No offense to anyone, but think about it! What are they going to do if someone else dies? Shorten the race even more? Make them go slower? Make racing so boring that nobody wants to watch anymore...like NASCAR?
All the environazis will ban all motor sports. All you will see is electric and solar powered drag and NASCAR races. Think about it. A drag race will take as long a a nascar race. Nascar will have one race a year. The Daytona 365 (add 1 for leap years).
It pisses me off that they're still limiting races to 1000ft even a year after this happened. It's fucking racing! It's dangerous! It's always been dangerous! Get over it already!
dude, have some respect for the dead, this video contained a man who lost his life. He shall never be forgotten by friends, family, and the racing community. R-I-P
@yoitsjoesmoe He took a risk and lost it. There is nothing to feel bad about. He wasn't doing anything important or heroic anyway. Just a guy trying to have fun and make money dangerously
