I've always thought of Bias as a more athletic version of Bernard King, which might have made him the premier small forward of all time. Not the ball handler that Jordan was, but unstoppable in the low post, on mid-range jumpers and quick moves to the basket, and finishing on the break. Think King, Worthy and Wilkins all in one package, hitting close to 60 percent of his shots, 30+ per game without breaking a sweat. Probably the smoothest college player I've ever seen, Jordan included.
I agree these are only highlights. they aren't that impressive. He's more impressive in person day in day out. He dominated every play he was involved in. he scored his points while giving up the ball consistently trying to keep his teamates involved. The no help comment is off because 3-4 of his teamates played in the NBA to some extent. Adrian Branch, Keith Gatlin, Jeff Adkins, Tony Massenburg. Dean Smith was the person to put Bias in the category with Jordan but I agree diff types.
Bias an Jordan different types of players. Bias didnt have the ball handling skills of MJ. Bias had a deadly 15 ft jump shot and had the ability to score 20+ points and 10 boards per game in the NBA. He would have been a Dominique Wilkins type player. Its a shame we will never see those highlights.
C'mon folks. these are only highlights. We're not seeing any dribble skill, defensive skills or any other factors. Dominique Wilkins was more spectacular if you add up all his highlights in college. Glen was a good college player. but his NBA career could have played out in a much different way. As it has for soooooooooooo many countless of other players. Great college career has never = great NBA career.
@NBAGOATS Give me a break! Wilkins played in the SEC while Bias was the best player in the best conference in America with little help around him. Bias was MUCH more advanced than Wilkins coming out of college and even more advanced than Jordan coming out. Bias was a better shooter than MJ, just as athletic, better rebounder, and had a couple of inches on him. Not saying Bias would have been the better NBA player, but he is the best college player I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of greats.
@ARMONI555 Jordan didn't have to do that in college nor would coach Smith allow it. You have to remember Jordan was on the same team with Sam Perkins, James Worthy and Brad Daugherty. Bias had to score like that or else they would not have been competitive. I remember watching Bias' teammate try to help with the scoring load and it was frustrating.
Yes,Bias was not only better than Jordan but a better prospect heading to the NBA. Peace
Name me one other starter from the Maryland team... Peace.
@MTXSHO9732vV8SHO yeah you make many great points there you cant argue that. but i cant help but wonder if len bias would have been as successful as jordan was in the nba. i know at least he would have been that anti jordan, kind of like what lebron is to kobe right now...but who is actually better between those 2 ? would we be arguing that same argument about len bias to jordan ? i think so
There were lots of dominant guys that came out between 83-88 or so. All we can say with any confidence is that most likely Bias would have changed it all provided he didn't pull a Roy Tarpley.
I LIVED for ESPN back in those days. They showed a ton of college GAMES 3 or 4 times a week and I couldn't wait to get home from practice to see what was going to happen, even with the mid-majors.I think people catch highlights of the best plays of many games and think they know something about basketball
finally 30 years later, this only seems a little out of place. Guys were not dunking over people at will back in those days. This guy was a freak of nature. He had been dunking since middle school, which was crazy for back then. Inexplicable, how tragically his life ended. He would have been better off at carolina or duke. I am a huge MD fan, but it wasn't worth the wins to lose bird to MJ's Johnson. These two players would have battled for 15 years at least!
Amazing ball player whose death had a ripple effect on the Celtics. It reminded me a little bit of Chris Webber leaving the Golden State warrior and effected the Warriors for years to come. It was like a 'punch in the stomach' for the franchise. CWeb departure was far less tragic, of course. Lenny dying impact the Celts and the league. Great player who would have made a great pro...
His death crippled the Celtics for over 20 years. Guys like him do not come around often and they almost struck pay dirt again within 7 years of drafting Bird. He would have been a force and without question a threat to MJ in the 90's preventing him winning as many titles as they did.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AIR BIAS, NOT AIR JORDAN.

Can you imagine to what heights he and Jordan might have pushed each other had they both played in the NBA?

I thought he was the best but he was picked 2nd overall by the Celtics. Brad Daugherty was picked ahead of him.

Len Bias was the 2nd pick of the 86 draft. Brad Daugherty went #1. Still a sad story of a great college basketball player.
