This is one of U2's better albums! IThey grow on you and after just a few times listening, the magic that U2 is so well known for kicks in. I kept playing it over and over again and that's when I realized why U2 is one of the best in the world, and why it takes a bit to get used to. The fact is, we get so used to ordinary music, that when something extraordinary like this comes along, it seems odd at first. They are just that much better than everyone else.
To all those wondering about the quality of this recording,it's Bono listening to the album. it was recorded months ago outside Bono's beachside house in Nice [hence the sound of waves and walking on pebbles]. Bono confirmed this on Radio 1 Jo Whiley show 27 Feb.Obviously U2 don't mind this recording as they didn't try to get it removed.
The voices u hear are the people who recorded it on their mobile phones.
by the way was a dutch guy who was walking arround the house of Bono in Eze zuid (France) Bono said that he was with friends at home with a couple of wine's and he felt like listend the cd but a bit loud.. thats was the right moment when this guy was walking arround and he recorded with his Mobile phone.. this was on you tube before the realease of the album...
got the NEW album yesterday in Dublin....WOW...cant hear a thing on this BUT it is a BRILLIANT song & the whole album except for one track is absolutely AMAZING:) U2 are not playing it safe with this one TRUST ME....its as daring as Achtung Baby & CLASSIC as Unforgetable Fire!! BRAVO BOYS....cant wait to see u in the summer!
The album ended up getting released a day early where I live so I was heaps excited about getting in early. This song and Moment of Surrender are seriously their best songs in a long time...if not ever! Don't download this album because it's too good...go out and buy it!
This song is absolutely amazing!!!!!! One of the best on the album, the entire album is amazing!! They have produced such a rich sound on this one with some really haunting chorus in them.
fuck in hell I´ve just heard MOMENT OF SURRENDER and i can tell you its the best song i´ve heard in my fucking life.....................better than one better than anything they´ve done
Damn this is an amazing song. Downloaded the album the entire thing is so complex, so rich in the sound mix. But this song "Uknown caller" simply blew me away. Those who haven't heard the actual song full sound quality are going to simply be speechless.
As other folks have said, I've heard the whole album and this is "Unknown Caller". The song is excellent, so far my favorite on No Line On The Horizon.
No joke. The album is all over the internet. An Australian music online music shop fucked up and allowed people to buy the album as MP3s earlier today. In a matter of minutes it was posted at torrent sites and now it's everywhere. I've already preordered and paid for the CD/DVD limited ed. box so I downloaded it a week early with good conscience.
yeah dude you are right the album has break down all over the internet i give faith of it. i was desperate trying to found it and now i have it... at least!!! =(:::::::::::::
no.. this is unknown caller.. here the text of the song :""Unknown Caller" I was lost between the midnight and the dawning In a place of no consequence or company 3:33 when the numbers fell off the clock face Speed dialimg with no signal at all Go, shout it out, rise up Oh, oh Escape yourself, and gravity Hear me, cease to speak that I may speak Shush now Oh, oh Force quit and move to trash "
Really, I was convinced of it at first, but now I'm not sure. It's really down to the sound clips that I heard. The organs at the start are on the track that is said to be moment of surrender, and it sounds just like the sound in this clip. The clip of what is said to be Unknown Caller sounds totally different, but after hearing a bit of Fez where that track starts completely different, then transforms into something different. I don't know. The lyrics match what is said to be Unknown, though.
Yes, yes. I am indeed humble enough to admit be eating humble pie. Regardless, it was a good thing I was wrong (and later alluded to it at least in another comment) because it means that it's just another cracking song to be added to a cracking album.
You can't. And don't listen to anyone who says they have heard the whole album. They are full of shit. There is a preview available about the net that lets you hear about 40 seconds of each song. The 3rd track on the album "Moment of Surrender" starts off with the organ ambient sound that you hear in Edge's guitar in the 3rd song sample in the preview, therefor this song is most certainly Moment of Surrender. I've heard the sample from Unknown, and it sounds nothing like this.
I've heard the track listings from the official album. This song is not Unknown Caller. It's Moment Of Surrender, which is the 3rd track after Magnificent. Don't argue.
This isn't even a question any more. The reviews which describe "Unknown Caller" confirm the lyrics heard here. They also describe the "french organ" heard at 2:37 Others reviewers also mention edge's solo and confirm "caller" to be known as "Beach clip 1" as this is. This has been confirmed and everyone in the know is simply waiting to hear this song in its full glory.
This song is called "Unknown Caller" and it IS on the new album. The part on the 30 second clip is likely the intro. This recording here is missing more than a minute.
Some really interesting ambient sounds in a late, late night setting more concerned with atmosphere than asserting itself. It's 3:33 a.m. "in a place of no consequence or company" and he's "speed dialling with no signal at all." The lyrics seem more impressionistic, disconnected and with a touch of David Bowie in the chanting underneath. And is that French horns at the end? Not usually heard on a U2 album.
''An epic with double-tracked vocals, wailing Edge guitar and pounding Adam bass.
It's a musical feast with so much going on it's initially tough to take it all in. In the chant-style chorus Bono sings: "Hear me/Cease to speak/That I may speak/Shush now." (47:00)
If nothing else, that's got to be another first for U2 -- a pop song with "Shush" in the lyric.''
I agree with you that it sounds a little bit like that, but It sounds a little strange when they sing Line on the...it sounds more like line on now, and furthermore No Line On The Horizon is a fast rock song.
I suppose. I have heard reports that there are two versions of this song, one rock, one ambient...could this be the ambient version? I certainly could hear this sped up a bit and played in a rock tempo. Just my two cents, but I still hear No Line on the Horizon at the 32 second mark...
I think it sounds more like: Don't....stop it now....than: No....line on the...
Furthermore the end of the song with the solo and the instruments sounds more like the reports of either Unknown caller or Moment of surrender. I doubt it's no line on the horizon, but who knows =) soon we all know!
0:49 Hear me/Cease to speak/That I may speak/Shush now

ana89 hit it on the head. Don't expect the last two albums. Think Achtung.....but bluezy, heavier in some parts, and much more layerd in the production process. The songs are complex and emotional. The way u2 was meant to sound.
When I heard these clips I was quite sure that the clip#3 (boots) was the first single. It had that Vertigo-style outgoing groove. First it was a catchy tune but the more I listened the clips the more obvious it was: Boots were the worst clip. Not bad but... Not the biggest song at all. Not even close. These three other songs are better. This Unknown Caller has beautiful Edge solo but my favourite is Magnificent. And I'm waiting for Moment of Surrender!
Isn't it always the case with modern U2? Use their supposedly weakest song as first single. If it goes to #1, then it gies to show that a crappy U2 can beat out the mainstream.
boots is getting a hard time its quite a good song. the negativity seems to come from fans of the last 2 albums ah well their loss! this album is going to have 5 or 6 massive songs.
I agree, it is impossible to judge a whole album on one song, that personally I don't think is quite bad. It just get some getting use to. But judging fromthe few clips here, I think this will be a very successful album and like you said 6 or 7 good songs =)
sounds good. Edge's guitar riffs are hot....it looks like that "boots" is one of the worst songs on the album...unbelievable that "boots" is 1st single...
It's actually not unbelievable at all that "Boots" was the 1st single. Think about all the big songs on "Aghtung" and then realize that the first single was "The Fly". Same thing with Zooropa which had "Numb" as the first single. "Boots" is a con... it has lots of meaning but it comes off as a fun tune. Also not the biggest on the CD I'm sure. This new album is looking to be U2 back at making more intelligent, lyrically less heavy handed songs. Unlike most of the ones on the past two albums.
I feel sorry for those of you who dont understand how beautiful this sounds

If one looks at the blog from Neil McCormick (the link is posted on U2s site) he states the lyrics for 'Unknown Caller'. Here's an excerpt
' yet seems to find himself talking to the inner voice of God ("Escape yourself, and gravity / Hear me, cease to speak that I may speak").'
Clearly this is what you hear as the lyrics in this soundbite, thus confirming once and for all that this IS 'Unknown Caller'.
