These guys are Yithians. They travel in time and possess bodies of other creatures (including humans) for years at a time for the sake of scientific study. That's what's happening to Jack here. Read the "Shadow Out of Time" for more info.

It's unclear if they came physically through, or just appeared in Jack's mind. Those portals seem to allow physical travel as well, but it's not the main from of intertemporal transportation for them. In the end one of them possesses Jack for several years.

I read lots of H.P Lovecraft... but I'm too young for a beer. I'm in the middle of reading a big paperback of every short story he wrote. So far my favorite was "The Colour out of Space" as it actually creeped me out, and I'm usually not creeped out by books or movies. By the way my good man...
