I'm referring specifically to the "electro" genre (also known as "electro-funk"), not electronic music in general. The first true electro-funk track was "Riot in Lagos" (1980) by Sakamoto/YMO, which pre-dated Kraftwerk's first electro-funk track "Numbers" (1981).
@Jagged85 I agree it does pre date Kraftwerk's numbers but don't forget about Trans Europe Express by Kraftwerk in 1977, It's a slower tempo but is originally the creation of Electro-Funk music
I would describe "Trans-Europe Express" (1977) as one of the first proto-electro tracks, while "Riot in Lagos" (1980) is one of the first true electro-funk tracks.
One way of putting it is that "Riot in Lagos" was like the final destination of the direction that "Trans-Europe Express" was heading towards.
This song sounds similar to the later electronic songs, Kraftwerk's "Numbers" (1981) and Afrika Bombaataa's "Planet Rock" (1982).
"Riot in Lagos" was responsible for pioneering the beats and sounds of electro music, but instead it's often "Planet Rock" or "Numbers" that get the credit, even though "Riot in Lagos" came before them.
On a side note, this was also the first live performance to use the Roland TR-808, one of the first and the most widely used programmable drum machine of all time.
Hosono once said that he was not impressed by Sakamoto when he composed "popular" pieces like Behind The Mask but was overwhelmed when he first listened to this piece. He felt he almost "prostrated" himself before Sakamoto for his versatility.
I believe this performance is their most important legacy. Ryuichi is playing his one-chord but elaborate piece of music and the other two guys are giving it sophisticated polyrhythm.
It could be called a masterpiece by the three Japanese talented artists.
Don't forget the prerecorded track in the background there. I bet that would make a good ambient track all on its own.
Takahashi's drum parts are really intelligent in both this and the End of Asia (which is the next track in the set). He's really worked it to develop the dace and feel of both of those tracks, I think. It's a contrast to the 1978 Kinokuni-ya hall recordings, where he made some of the tracks feel clumsy by playing in a disco style that didn't fit rhythmically with the songs (IMO)
Yellow Magic Orchestra reminds me of the times when I used to play Playstation SimCity in middle school ... they must have had an influence on video game music. :)
That's got to set the record for the most keyboards ever seen on one stage...
I remember hearing the original version of this on the radio in NYC back when it first came out. Carlos DeJesus played it on his show, and never identified it, just saying afterward "WKTU, just a little ahead of our time..." I happened to have a tape rolling, and finally got it identified 25 years later.
This seriously cool techno tune was performed in 1980.I remember there were still full of crap disposable happy and cheerful disco music in the chart and most people still hated the sounds of synthesizers but these guys didn't seem to care at all as they knew what they were doing and what everyone would be listening in years to come. This is one of thier KraftWerk killer tune, brill live version and absolute classic!.
@chinkogakusaizo, it's a shame that so much modern techno is so minimal and braindead. YMO was highly disciplined, sophisticated electronica and one of my favorite groups.

未だに刺激的なのは今の音楽家に先陣切ってくパワーを感じないからでしょうね。

They did, but Playstation games don't really have "videogame music" for the most part. YMO sounds more like old Sega games, pre-Saturn era.
