This is real F1, what a great era! And knowing the glory of the Turbo Era was right around the corner. The turbo cars really dominated this high altitude track where the NAs were especially weak. I remember playing my '82 Atari Pit Stop game as a kid that had this track as one of my favs. Such memories.....shame the US had little F1 TV coverage back then. I'm still searching for the best way to get quality DVD full seasons of the old days..
Seems that safety issues were still nonexistent though.. yes, like you said, what had happened in 1977. On a side note it's rather interesting that they drove in South Africa in the first place with apartheid and all that shit going on. Not many black people in the audience.
The clip does not indicate that Jody Scheckter LED most of the race after racing on slicks in the wet [marvellous car control] - taking the lead when the track dried. The only reason Villeneuve won was because Jody had to stop and change tyres as they were worn.
Did he say "Bar B Que Bend"?

Gotta love that helicopter footage! It captures the speed and atmosphere at the same time, and gives a magnificent view of this lost track.
New Kyalami seems quite nice to drive, but knowing the fact it replaced this old track, the shine fades...

@Jyllenberg
At least we can still drive those tracks in the racing games/sims we have.

The marshal waving the red flag at 1:15 had a lot of balls, given what happened where he was standing two years previously.
Excellent footage, thanks for posting.
