  • We heard his song in our english lesson :) very good

  • This is good but one must admit Cash took it above.

  • I do like the original better than Cash's cover - which is saying something because Cash is a master. The Dresden Dolls have a pretty awesome cover too.

  • Nice one nick

  • Each singer portrays something different.

  • Personally I do like Cash's version but it's a polished American style and sounds like it's coming from a man that has cone to terms with his state of mind. Cave wrote this from a convicted killers point of view, the original version captures and portrays a chaotic state of mind extremely well.

  • i feel stupid now for thinking johnny cash wrote this, not that his version isn't amazing... but this kicks ass

  • My first encounter with Nick Cave, I'll be listening to more; thats for sure

  • @S1ngefou i envy you, you will discover amazing stuff …

  • @grandguignolplanet whose cover? johnny cash's?

  • @grandguignolplanet I really couldn't have put it better myself. You set it straight. You fucking win at youtube comments!

  • Grandeeeeeee

  • 

  • The Johnny Cash cover is totally better.

  • @ZroseZ And I´m totally agree with you !!! Johnny´s version is much better cause that´s much psychodelic than this one... I don´t like this version, sorry for all :)

  • @Emilienn84 Even if Nick wrote the original version? As a convicted but innocent killer?

  • @grandguignolplanet since when is it a cover???

  • I prefer polish band Kult cover-"Krzeslo Laski"

  • Nick Cave wrote the song, anyone who doesn't like his version as much as Johnny Cash's, just doesn't get the song at all. John covered it because it is one of, if not the best, songs ever written, I love this, hate it's cut up a bit, still great.

  • @nshvnancy Don't say stupidnesses like these. There is no 'best song ever'.it's totally pointless

  • @TheUniversalDamon BEST SONG EVER!

  • @Espie1979 ok keep the good work

  • Right at the end I see the demeanour of the some time drummer for The True Spirit, Chris Hughes, in the eyes of Mr.K.. Hohenzollerization can do that for a person, yield to them the aura of someone else from whence came the material basis. But who knows in this case?

  • anyone know who the bongo player and bass player are?

  • The lyrics in this song are just the best.

  • for me , is a god !!

  • I don't find this sound good or something... It's weird, I prefer Johnny Cash. That sounded great.. this just doesn't

  • My heart swelled double size after hearing this.Merry christmas!

  • Најежим се сваки пут кад чујем ову песму, свако извођење му злата вреди! Какав текст...

  • Enjoyed this - I saw Nick a few years back and he had a group of gothettes trying to touch the hem of his coat....however once a song's been Cashed :-)

  • @grandguignolplanet I am a Nick Cave fan, but my compliments to Johnny Cash.

  • Ungh. Ungh. I don't think he gets to mention Christ. YouTube, I bid you farewell. Forever.

  • he is just god!

  • i think this is one of my fav tv shows, and i haven't seen a single episode of it..

  • It's always a great emotion i have when i see him/ A great man with a great song. I'm so melancolic sometimes when i saw him like here, wich reminds me my youngest, but a few seconds later, i realise that Nick Cave is still here, in a great form, with Warren Ellis and the others!

  • This was actually one of Johnny Cash's favorite songs...supreme cover he did of it!

  • I love listening to the different things that can be done with this song, but nobody can beat that voice.

  • @wayneben10

    yes! i did that

  • @wayneben10 Um yes, and I read really high on dope too just to get the full effect.

  • In the same role, nice!

  • 1 word mercy

  • I saw Nick reading some of his poetry about ten years ago in London - the room was full of girlies trying to touch the hem of his rainment. He's a great writer, and this is an extraordinary song.

  • Chills while I watch this.

  • @seapox If you didn't you're made of stone, end of story.

  • Heart to the unjust dead ! Hello america and around the world .Poor Innocsence

  • Night Music was a great show...excepting David Sanborns insistence on accompanying his guests on saxophone at the end of every show. I forgive him.

  • geniale...

  • So fucking intense man. Yet the lyrics, Mick Harvey's guitar, and the bongos create such a depressing mood. Absolutely perfect!

  • mi inchino davanti a cosi tanta bellezza.. l'emozioni a me date non son mai cambiate nel tempo.. hai scritto bene Metalheaven non è possibile descrivere..

  • Doesnt get any better than this.

Apart from maybe John Finn's Wife....

  • Fantastic song! Сочувствую тем, кто этого не понимает.

  • can`t say a word - that was just too much good music for me!! :O

  • As for the 29 people that disliked this video, deserve to sit in the mercy seat..

  • @CaptianObviousIII -THIS IS NICK CAVE-HE BROUGHT MUSIC BACK TO MY SOUL!

HE IS,IN MY OPINION,ONE OF THE GREATEST STORY TELLERS AND SONG WRITTERS.

  • @flagshipsinkercapy Agreed. Amazing storyteller and composer!

  • Damn that was good. I think I like this version even better then the original.

  • This is a fine variation on the Tender Prey version

    I like it

  • yeah, as well as Cash did it.

  • @turtles12 Ok well lets see some of your poetry?

  • @turtles12 who do you think is better than Nick cave?

  • I agree with metalheaven. That is all.

  • I will give him a 2/100 ;D

  • why the hell do you call someone a 'cum stain' for making a perfectly reasonable comment? I'm pretty sure the point was how good it was. Maybe I shall call you a 'sphincter' for no reason at all. Anyway, main point is how good this is. Cave is always great, but I think these dark back alley type sessions have something extra. Don't give up fighting the world, because Christ knows it needs to be fought against

  • I have a very good version of this song on CD and i wlli upload it soon- maybe by the end of the week so check it out soon if you would like... please dont spam this im truying to help spread more versions of this song that are still by nick cave throuout youyube... seriosly there are like 10 seperate versions of the song that are still by nick cave...

  • this is like the 300 time I watch this! love nick cave!

  • It sounds strange when they start off with the second verse. I love how it do it in this video.

  • Who told the host his hair looked good like that? By the way, I wish it did, as that is my natural hair quality. :(

  • I've puzzled over the best to play this on the ol' acoustic guitar. It's an odd one I must say.

  • I love the last shot of his face ( 4 : 44 ).

  • He looks so very prophetic in this video.

  • "In heaven the thrown is made of gold, down here its made of wood and wire" Powerful

  • @MrGameRankings

    The THROWN?

    ROFL

Profound. Now go to school and ask a teacher what a "THRONE" is, poet.

    L O L

  • @gormarx

Actually mate, in Brazil he actually spell it as "thrown" wrong or right, i have no idea, that's how i learnt it.

  • @MrGameRankings Ah, so you're not a native English speaker, I apologize. I know many English speakers mistake so many basic words (there/they're/their; your/you're; complement/compliment, etc.), but that's poor education and literacy. I doubt Nick would make that mistake, though. Anyway - trust me on this one - what "He" (i.e., presumably God) sits upon is a "throne" while what you throw is "thrown" - very different words, obviously. Once again, sorry I was a jackass & made fun of your mistake.

  • Love this...

  • you're right humans are narrow minded and un imaginative, thank god us dinosaurs have somewhat cognitive thought

  • I don't know if Johnny Cash's version is better. This version certainly has a more haunting quality to it. I love how the intensity builds gradually over the course of the song.

  • @benthemagnificent I agree, I prefair the original since it's more intense. Nick Cave has more anger in it. Johnny Cash added more sadness in his cover, but it was lacking the anger. I usually hate cover songs. Today they are mostly done by factory-produced bands covering old hits to get attention. Cash where doing something new with all the songs he covered and was already a true legend, so his version of mercy seat deserves the attention.

  • Man, this song is exponentially better LIVE!! Simply haunting. Song stays with you long after you hear it!!

  • my uncle worked for the bad seeds back in the day :D

  • i like it. johnny's better/ but still good 4/5

  • I was going to try to write a comment describing how that made me felt, but I realise that is not possible, nor necessary.

  • that would rank 7/10 compared to an Oscar wild quote

  • @metalheaven well played

  • @metalheaven Dick foo relax

  • @metalheaven havent you heard,being a dickhead is cool

  • this music is too good for a mass, mainstream audience

  • amazing. i love nick cave so much.

  • He has a great voice for songs like this. In the words of TV Tropes "He could make 'Happy Birthday' sound like a death threat."

  • I love Nick Cave. I also love the Wings of Desire. He had a great role in film Johnny Suede a singer called Freak Storm

  • Such a powerful song, it puts me right in the electric chair, staring at a room full of people with looks of persecution on their faces.

  • ooh, bongos adds an interesting twist to this song. it had to grow on me a bit, but i like it. :)

  • bongos rock! I listen to all the others, I like this felling best!

  • man i miss this show. david sanborn had some great guest on his show.

  • Aguante Nick Cave putos!

  • far farout!!!!!

  • genius fuck...thats all

  • i love you!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love nick! the only band I wanted to see but never had a chance he is up there on my list with the legendary pink dots!

  • I´ts a big shame that I have not discovered their music until now. Mucho great stuff.

  • All of the cds have a different sound, but I'd recommend " Let Love In" , "abattoir Blues" and "dig, Lazarus Dig" Nick is a lyrical genius

  • Thanks man, I´ll check those out.

  • I'd recommend 'Murder Ballads' for his dark side

  • I saw him play last week,if you can catch him live its a classic gig

  • lucky man!! I never tought I would fell jelousy!! until I saw this comment!

  • a different class!

  • the congas go wonderful with the song. great version :-) thx for posting

  • Every time when i lessn this nice song i feel something great and something bad, true bielief and...

    great song by nice band

  • einfach nur geil, hört euch aber auch mal die version von goethes erben"sitz der gnade" an.geniale interpretation dieses klassikers.

  • Thyis is just Occult......awesome!!

  • If a man could sing his experiences of the chair, this is how I would imagine he would do it.

  • i like this version more than the album version

  • You should check out the version from the B-sides and Rarities box set. Soooooo good.

  • The song suits both men, Cash and Cave, really well.

Johnny Cash also did a really heartbreaking version of "Hurt" by NIN and so was it with "The Mercy Seat", i think because of his talent, his voice and also because of his age and illness when he did the covers. He put a great own spirit into the songs - thats everything i wish when someone covers masterpieces.

But Cave owns it, absolutely. His original is darker and more violent. I love it so much that i wonder if anyone can do it better :D

  • I agree with you Angrautimas about Johnny Cash's covers. I think the emotional power he brought to both the songs you mentioned comes from the aura he had by that time. Especially in "Hurt"!! You could FEEL his pain in that song.... Very powerful.

  • this is amazing. just absolutely epic and amazing and spinechilling and lovely.

  • belloooooo

  • EPIC STUFF FROM THE KING OF ANTI-POP! I love Johnny Cash but this song is so much more powerful by Nick Cave, more terriying, less God-fearing, awesome song either way tho!!!

  • Incredibly powerful song

  • He is brilliant.

There is a german version from it too. Its called "Sitz der Gnade"

  • and it's much better ^^

Goethes Erben are one of the best bands, I know.. great lyrics and the best articulation...

  • I love it...

  • It's called "music" you fucking cum stain.

  • ha good 1.

  • @meridian676 Coll, I just love it when people call each other names on youtube. 'Cum stain'... that was a new one. I do think that Nick Cave would approve. You know, he's got a thing about words. Very intellectual.

  • i really didn't like it

    ok just a little bit

    alright then i liked it

yes i loved it god i love this

  • genius

  • kazik staszewski wykonal to znacznie lepiej :)

  • so wahts teh lie? that he aint afraid?

  • the lie was that he really did kill her.

  • Oh cheers...I wondered. Haunting tune - but then most of his stuff is.

  • what awesome hair the presenter at the start has.........( sarcasm off ).......

  • How is it at the piano and who's the upright bass player?

  • for me this is the best version of the song

  • No, Nick Cave is the one who wrote the original song. Johnny Cash's version is a cover (and a good one).

  • nie nadaje sie koles!!!!!!!!!

  • Not many songwriters/performers can send a chill up the spine. Very powerful artist.

  • Damnnnn.. my hair is melting while i listen ... WONDERFUL

  • One of the greatest songwriters of all time.

  • one of the best song!

  • Yes, only topped by Nick's reading of Tupelo.... and Red Right Hand IMHO!

  • Indeed.

Although a couple of his love ballads are also awesome stuff.

Red right hand is a fucking amazing song.... ol johnny cash should have covered that too!!

  • sorry, but I strongly disagree...

  • splendida questa versione

  • Johnny Cash is the Man. But Nick is the song writter. J Cash lived the song.
