Cobalt: That is utter bull. You are not an atheist thanks to Bishop Sheen. You are lying overtly or to yourself. You cannot rationalize your own stupid behavior and choices by accusing Bishop Sheen. You are responsible for your own actions. Stop being a coward.
It was at this time, I lost my faith. I began to read the lectures of Robert G. Ingersoll and Thomas Paine's "Age of Reason." I also read Darwin's "Origin of the Species." Today, I am an atheist, thanks to Sheen.
"One of the ill effects of becoming a highbrow....is he has no use for the common people. That's when knowledge begins to spoil--when you've lost touch with the common man."
Jesus asked him if he'd like to be canonized the day he died and i think the reason he hasnt been yet is cause Jesus is still waiting for him to finish his response :)
Sheen was very popular---so much so that his show, which was based on the Dumont Network and later ABC, competed somewhat sucessfully (in its markets) with the shows of Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra. Unlike many clergymen, whose sermons were either dry or fire-and-brimstone, Sheen's offerings were down-to-earth, laced with humor and acecdotes and easy to listen to.
That's true, isnt' it sometimes the more knowledge that you gain, one should develop wisdom and humility as there's a higher temptation of pride. Thank you CatholicClips, I understand now why many priests/ apologetics quote him. He gives an important message that is still valid to present.
On the subject of people being preoccupied with appearacnce, has anyone else noticed that (since the advent of tv) US presidents have been more attractive and more worthless as time marches on.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Lincoln and FDR never would've been elected if they'd have been seen on tv.
Viewers today might be a little put-off by a guy who looks like he stepped right out of 1534, but if only we could get past what people look like and actually hear and understand the words coming out of his mouth!
I guess we, who have been raised in the digital age of constant stimulation, can't listen to a man talk for an hour, with no explosions, drama, or nakedness to entertain us. It's sad.
It's kind of like how I think of Saint Pius X...he was worried about how bad society was in his day, but look at how worse it is now! And Archbishop Sheen was commenting on how stupid people are in his society because they no longer read. And today...well....need we say more?
I have, for many years of my life, as the son of a Protestant minister's son, been so enthralled with this man. I have his entire series "Life Is Worth Living." Regardless how the Vatican declares, he is, in my mind, by action, a Saint.
Fulton Sheen is awesome: I made a tribute video to him. He deserves better, but it is the best I could do. Check it our if you are so inclined. easiest way is to use my user name.
On the "barbarism of specialization," see Ortega y Gassett's The Revolt of the Masses, ch. 12. The whole book is available to read online. Search google.
If there were more preachers like this we'd be in a lot better shape.
Why did the Catholic Church ditch good, wise men like in favor of the current bad crop?

Jesus is the Son of God. He will return at the end of the age to judge the living and the dead. Jesus is Lord.
God bless you.

It's nice how the Bishop uses the royal 'we' to start his sentences. He would of made a wonderful pope!

3 hours of TV a week? Bless you, excellency, you warned us.
According to csun(dawt)edu the average TV watched per family is 49 hours each week.
God please bless the Bishops, that they may continue to protect your flock.

@ImpulseGuy2006 Just be patient with the process, the Vatican is just following the protocols, Sheen wouldn't have wanted it any other way
