  • @AlanColeslaw also, i thought Dave used only two snares, not a floor tom.

  • @WORDTrue2010 Chris is using up to five snares at a time nowadays, with no toms of any description.... but this was recorded a hell of a long time ago doc!

  • nah. spanky plays like chris dave. He came first

  • yea thats what i meant my bad

  • this is who spanky got his style from

  • exactly

  • @ChrisJefferiesMusic yo who cares who came first. niggas are doing they own thing, being the best they can be. out

  • @Bozkicksyourface haha are they though? spanky sounds A LOT like chris dave. Anyone can imitate, few can create.

  • @ChrisJefferiesMusic

I believe picasso said "good artists imitate, great artists steal."

Its not like spanky and chris dave are the first drummers to mess with time.

Check out Bill Bruford, Tony Williams, Max Roach... to name a few

  • @ChrisJefferiesMusic i might not have came first but uhhh.... i think i came... the most

  • they both two different styles!

  • I need some Remix Hats.

  • @Demetriwalker Goodluck getting remix hats....they've been discontinued for years....

  • That's the beauty of ebay and craigslist.

  • I looked there.......No luck dude......You might as well look there everyday and go to Boston and visit the Zildjian Factory and ask for some Remix Hats.....in fact Tony Royster had some custom A custom Remix hats in his set up :)

  • incredible..

  • One of the best performances of all time......this shit is soooooo beyond nasty

  • yeah...

  • sometimes society doesnt want to hear complex harmonies just make it feel good sometimes...... my 2 cent

  • jesus, this is some nasty shit!

  • that's ok, man 'cause you must have already been dead rhythmically

  • Awesome rhythm section

  • oh my god, this is ridiculous. is chris dave god?

  • yes check him out on the new Robert Glasper album

  • Meshell Ndegeocello and Chris Dave make one nasty rhythm section

  • haha, i love at 0:21 ... the guy on the mics like "We got a good drummer here"... as if the audience really needed to hear that haha

  • yo chris dave is bad.........

  • Brutal' .. excelente baterista .. inspirador

  • EXCELLENT DRUMMER !!!!!!!

  • Don't wanna be to deep, but Chris Dave is SO UNDERATED! Hopefully one day he'll be celebrated for his impact on music and to musicians. Dude is deep behind the kit...

  • that rimshot groove at the beginning blew me away... the most musical drummer i ve seen so far, awesome, VERY inspirational...

  • this is one of the funkiest grooves, THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL FUNKY!!!!!!!!!!

  • @diontrae4 well ya its a Herbie Hancock groove, of course this shit is funk! lol

  • yo, and you have to listen to Me'shelle Ndegeocello - Comfort Woman with Chris Dave on the set. RAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That's the album that made me get serious about the drums

  • ugh.....my stomach turned inside out....this grove is sick!!!!

  • is there a certain name for that style of drumming? i find it regularly associated with chris dave and spanky mccurdy

  • No - Dave says he was influenced by Tony Williams, and spanky has more of a gospel thing, but it's not just a gospel thing... if that makes sense. This video is really great man... it's been a while since I've heard it!

  • true as this may be. they do have a similar way of phrasing tho influentially they may be different they're styles are synonymous to a degree. The phrasing is impeccable with both drummers and very much different. But I'd have to say their on this plateau and forefront of a new way of drumming.

  • You know, I don't know who Spanky's influences would be. The "styles" you refer to are a complex interweaving of jazz, neo-soul, hip hop, and gospel. It's an urban-gritty thing that's very difficult to pin down... I kinda like that it's hard to describe.

  • yeah it is hard to describe lol. some people say music has already gone and went. but there is so much more to experience, to play with and its nice to see cats out there doing it. its nice to get a cognitive response instead of a big F you and I'm right cuz mama said. peace easy holygroove keep sheddin

  • Yall should check out Deantoni Parks if you want to see what I consider to be "on the forefront of a new way of drumming."

  • Still though. Chris came from a gospel thing too, then he studied jazz, which I don't think Spanky did. I'd describe Spanky as kind of post-gospel... but Chris is like the Tony Williams of pocket drums. And his straight-ahead is like... neo-fusion? It's like jazz that absorbed gospel/R&B the way the first generation of fusion drummers absorbed rock and soul

  • well said.

  • CHRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIISSSS MY DAYS.

Thats a nice groove thats all im gunna say

  • i watch dis video bout 10 times a day!!!

  • Nice ... groovn like crazy !

    bassist S. Clarke

  • Amazing drummin' right here! Dayum, Chris!

  • see where spank gets his chops from

  • you happen to know where they were playing at this night?

  • what year was this recorded.

  • He is a Beast 4 real

  • awesome!

  • hey guys, man this guy is problably the most inovative drummer around, I love is language on the drums... BY the way is hi hats are a Sabian HHX Groove hats, problably 14", or maybe 15 inches... I have a HH brigth hats 13 inches for this kind of sound that you need a lot of stick defenition is great, but I want a HHX groove hats, amazing soundind hats...

  • With that crisp sound..he must be using a Sabian HHX jazz series hi hat.

  • anybody got some idea what hi hat is he playing on? just love its sound, just wish I knew what is it

  • You can tell when you got a thick groove when your bass player just falls in time with you, and your heads are moving together..

  • wow.. how could i missed such a drummer for so long? shame on me!

  • yo, ever since Mint Condition, "The Definiton of a Band" and I gotta chance to meet Chris Daddy Dave. I been using some of his fills in my playing. He is most def in my ten drummers of all time.. He need to be on Modern Drummer next DVD forreal.

  • pookie man!!!

  • i love chris daddy dave and i think he is one of the greatest ever.

  • i wish i was there for that

  • Better? I dunno. Different? Definately. Sounds like 2008? Hell yes

  • This is the baddest groove ever laid to youtube

  • sickest video in ages

  • I was blessed to play with Chris with Kathy Taylor and with some of the guys from his high school HSPVA in Houston...he's obviously grown and developed but make no mistake, he was that intense and technically astute as a junior and senior in HS. He's also got a really funny sense of humor. Keep going deeper, CD!

  • all ya'll gotta listen to meshell's older drummer, sean the rick rickman. he puts everyone else in primary school

  • Everyone? Really?

  • You know your grooving when your bass player and your head (the drummer) are moving at the same speed together lol.

  • Chris Dave, What a killer!!

  • tight groove!

  • dont get me wrong tho, spanky, tony, aaron, etc., are all great drummers but are all limited in originality and creativity when it comes to creativity... i'd kill to be able to play like them, but while these cats are just playing drums, chris dave is making music!...

  • I mean they are carrying Tony William's and Chris's style too

I mean most of Spanky's chops are based of Chris's Style

  • chris dave is the most creative drummer today hands down. he takes a lil bit of so many different drumming styles and not necessarilly uses them but creates his on style 4rm them and closest to him when it comes to originality is not spanky, but stokley williams of mint condition. watch the chris dave and stokley battles and you see what i'm talking bout. and similar to what "thatsmypeanuts" said spanky is good but he pretty much just uses chris dave licks and gospel licks. nothing to original

  • chris dave started on the bongos at the christian hope baptist church

  • DAMN IT DAMN. I need to get into the places these cats are playing.

  • Well folks, you will always sound like another drummer, every part has already been played, its just how you apply it in a different situation.

  • yea spanky is way closer to chris daves artistic abilities and style than aaron, gerald, or tony...... chris invented his own style on top on Tony williams

  • Yup. He translated Tony Williams to groove/pocket/hiphop/gospel idiom

  • I'll remember that! I've never thought that Dave's style could be categorized in this way, but it makes sense. He's fun to listen to.

  • George McCurdy is the closest drummer to Chris Dave in terms of originality. Don't believe me??? Check him out for youself.

  • He sounds like Chris. I don't think he's as original. A lot of his licks are Chris's. I mean he's beyond dope but his bag is like half standard issue church licks and half Chris Dave

  • i agree!!!

  • LOVE THIS! DAYUM!

  • chris and meshell are at the top of the game, why can't they find other cats that can hang at their level?

  • Tony Royster Jr. can hang

  • Aaron Spears can hang too - Marc A

  • disagree with these guys. Tony and Aaron are raw as hell but it's just basically the same chops as a lot of other people. Chris Dave completely invented a new style of drumming that everybody is now copying. Plus, Tony and Aaron don't have the straight-ahead skills Chris does

  • Well, Ton and Aaron can physical hang. they have the chops and speed for it, it just depends on how they choose to do their fills.

  • beautiful!!!! chris dave... the best!!!!

  • great video....chris dave is a phenomenal drummer with great improvisational skills

  • they Finished w/tha "butterfly" progression

or was it the whole time!!>.anyhow mega sick~~

  • yea Butterfly, she just laid down a different feel for the solo section.

  • !!!! Totally speechless

  • i could cry right now!! Chris Dave is the greatest!!

  • I love it. Chris Dave is a friggin animal. Meshell is amazing. She's happy grooving a hole in the floor man... geez. This is inspiring.

  • chris daddy dave is one of the best.

  • First of all, thank you for posting this. Could you post more of this set? Please?!? this is one of the most intense and intricate laid back grooves I've ever heard! thanks!

  • Soooo smooooootttthhhhh!!!

  • Yo white musicians in the house, let me hear you say yeah! ...(crickets)...

  • I have been playing drums for 29 yrs, and this has motivated me to stop playing for a while and look for something deeper in the music, his approach is so fresh

  • I don't think that is how you will improve...if you have not had a Sankofa or some moment of Clarity what is the point in stopping to do something, just to get better at that something you just stopped doing?

  • I wouldn't say that I am looking to improve. My days of gigging and recording are done, I just play for my personal enjoyment. I am just realizing that being a gigging musician I put myself into a box and remained purely a pocket player, and never ventured far out of it. Made me a lot of money. But now, I am looking for something deeper, studying a lot of drummers, and listening for a while, that's all

  • Mmm! Well have fun...

  • I hear ya.

  • This is simply badass!!! Thank you for sharing.

Tank Gully and Chris tend to do a lot of similar stuff. Both are utter monstrosities.
