@WORDTrue2010 Chris is using up to five snares at a time nowadays, with no toms of any description.... but this was recorded a hell of a long time ago doc!
I looked there.......No luck dude......You might as well look there everyday and go to Boston and visit the Zildjian Factory and ask for some Remix Hats.....in fact Tony Royster had some custom A custom Remix hats in his set up :)
Don't wanna be to deep, but Chris Dave is SO UNDERATED! Hopefully one day he'll be celebrated for his impact on music and to musicians. Dude is deep behind the kit...
No - Dave says he was influenced by Tony Williams, and spanky has more of a gospel thing, but it's not just a gospel thing... if that makes sense. This video is really great man... it's been a while since I've heard it!
true as this may be. they do have a similar way of phrasing tho influentially they may be different they're styles are synonymous to a degree. The phrasing is impeccable with both drummers and very much different. But I'd have to say their on this plateau and forefront of a new way of drumming.
You know, I don't know who Spanky's influences would be. The "styles" you refer to are a complex interweaving of jazz, neo-soul, hip hop, and gospel. It's an urban-gritty thing that's very difficult to pin down... I kinda like that it's hard to describe.
yeah it is hard to describe lol. some people say music has already gone and went. but there is so much more to experience, to play with and its nice to see cats out there doing it. its nice to get a cognitive response instead of a big F you and I'm right cuz mama said. peace easy holygroove keep sheddin
Still though. Chris came from a gospel thing too, then he studied jazz, which I don't think Spanky did. I'd describe Spanky as kind of post-gospel... but Chris is like the Tony Williams of pocket drums. And his straight-ahead is like... neo-fusion? It's like jazz that absorbed gospel/R&B the way the first generation of fusion drummers absorbed rock and soul
hey guys, man this guy is problably the most inovative drummer around, I love is language on the drums... BY the way is hi hats are a Sabian HHX Groove hats, problably 14", or maybe 15 inches... I have a HH brigth hats 13 inches for this kind of sound that you need a lot of stick defenition is great, but I want a HHX groove hats, amazing soundind hats...
yo, ever since Mint Condition, "The Definiton of a Band" and I gotta chance to meet Chris Daddy Dave. I been using some of his fills in my playing. He is most def in my ten drummers of all time.. He need to be on Modern Drummer next DVD forreal.
I was blessed to play with Chris with Kathy Taylor and with some of the guys from his high school HSPVA in Houston...he's obviously grown and developed but make no mistake, he was that intense and technically astute as a junior and senior in HS. He's also got a really funny sense of humor. Keep going deeper, CD!
dont get me wrong tho, spanky, tony, aaron, etc., are all great drummers but are all limited in originality and creativity when it comes to creativity... i'd kill to be able to play like them, but while these cats are just playing drums, chris dave is making music!...
chris dave is the most creative drummer today hands down. he takes a lil bit of so many different drumming styles and not necessarilly uses them but creates his on style 4rm them and closest to him when it comes to originality is not spanky, but stokley williams of mint condition. watch the chris dave and stokley battles and you see what i'm talking bout. and similar to what "thatsmypeanuts" said spanky is good but he pretty much just uses chris dave licks and gospel licks. nothing to original
yea spanky is way closer to chris daves artistic abilities and style than aaron, gerald, or tony...... chris invented his own style on top on Tony williams
He sounds like Chris. I don't think he's as original. A lot of his licks are Chris's. I mean he's beyond dope but his bag is like half standard issue church licks and half Chris Dave
disagree with these guys. Tony and Aaron are raw as hell but it's just basically the same chops as a lot of other people. Chris Dave completely invented a new style of drumming that everybody is now copying. Plus, Tony and Aaron don't have the straight-ahead skills Chris does
First of all, thank you for posting this. Could you post more of this set? Please?!? this is one of the most intense and intricate laid back grooves I've ever heard! thanks!
I have been playing drums for 29 yrs, and this has motivated me to stop playing for a while and look for something deeper in the music, his approach is so fresh
I don't think that is how you will improve...if you have not had a Sankofa or some moment of Clarity what is the point in stopping to do something, just to get better at that something you just stopped doing?
I wouldn't say that I am looking to improve. My days of gigging and recording are done, I just play for my personal enjoyment. I am just realizing that being a gigging musician I put myself into a box and remained purely a pocket player, and never ventured far out of it. Made me a lot of money. But now, I am looking for something deeper, studying a lot of drummers, and listening for a while, that's all
