I have to agree with the people that think this just sucks. This is as stated by Rockinghorserider, so bad on so many levels. Gotta hand it to the chick though, nobody else has ever butchered a Dylan tune to such a degree
@snowandrews This is a forum for people to comment on music, weather or not the comments are pro or con. If you don't like the negative comments, don't read them.
@sngncwby Johnny Winter's version (at least on the 30th Anniversary Show) was horrible. Needs guitar lessons? What would you like her to do? Whip out a few shreds?
I love the little smirk at the end as she turns from the mic...it's like she's saying...Yeah I am that fucking good and I fucking know it'......She's amazing!
@emmagreenbean hey Pj has written some damn good tunes.. i don't see any reason why she couldn't write a song similar to this.. in fact i think it's right down her alley.. she's a great flake and no telling what you're gonna get but it's always entertaining and certainly artistic.. helluva combo.
@dimstar0625 yeah scorpio and few others don't realize the original was thematically fitted and perfectly produced at the time. obviously they've never seen his solo stage performances during the 70s.. more heated and choppy in arrangement just as the one above, and also a clip with tom petty and the heartbreakers in 84 i think. that time the beat was modified for outdoor 'arena rock'.. wonderful video.. sony removes it from youtube in a blink, but 5 will get you 20 that Pj drew energy from it.
Have you heard Bob Dylan's version?it's weak compared to this. PJ kicks the sh-t out of his version!! What exactly makes Bob Dylan "untouchable"? PJ is most likely paying tribute to an artist who inspired her, it's called a cover, and every great artist usually does it at some time, it's showing respect to those who inspired them, it's very respectful, and I'm sure Bob Dylan would be very honored and touched by this. No reason for you not to be able to like it, and enjoy it with the rest of us.
Thanks for this post! Heard it on a boot some time ago, glad to see it now. Seen PJ 4 times...lemme tell ya, the live versions of her own songs (and, just last month, John Parish, too) are a-m-a-z-i-n-g
Dylan is a great writer but PJ Harvey is 200x the performer. just because he's canonized doesn't make him untouchable. two greats coming together, what's to complain about
What makes Dylan a master? The fact that his music outlives his own performances and can stand up to the considerable talents of so many other musicians who not only recreate but fully reinterpret his work. So... get over yourself. I'm sure this is the sort of thing a guy like Dylan loves.
there is no such thing like "untachable" in music, think of that, the great Bob's song "All along the watchtower" music is orginally wrote by Heandrix and lyrics are his (btw it's quite a colaboration)!)
And I think Bob is glad that his music is still alive also in some other artist lips and hearts
she sounds exactly like kim gordon when she shouts ... like when she says highway

The drums ruin her for me.
I like her voice and attitude but the drums are way too out.
He's playing his "fills" as the main riff and it's annoying,
to me anyway. He is way over playing and playing all over her voice.
He's a good drummer . . but he needs to lay back A LOT.

@GaryNull Rubbish!!! Drums are amazing on this! Excelllent drummer! They're the engine of the whole thing.

This is one of the grittiest, most powerful versions of a Dylan song since XTC did "All Along the Watchtower"

Bollocks, ain't you ever heard the Jimi Hendrix cover of All Along The Watchtower?
DerWhiteRabbit 4 years ago
of course I've heard it...but IMHO Hendrix's cover is inferior to the original...PJ's cover is the only one that surpasses the original
antipyrene 4 years ago
That's bollocks, Dylan himself said Hendrix's version of AATW was better.
