Watch LGA ground tracks at passur daht com while listening to LGA radio at liveatc daht nett. This is a good way to learn the nuts and bolts of local traffic conditions. Sorry for the dumb links. Youtube forbids real links.
Replying to Berzerker204... Traffic from the south or southwest headed to LGA when Expressway 31 is in effect are funneled in line over NJ, then come over Staten Island, Brooklyn and make the turns for rwy31. All the while, the controllers have wide discretion on how they fine tune things like ground track, spacing and so on. Something unexpected, maybe a sudden wind shift, caused them to have your flight go well north of the city just to turn around and go south for a rwy31 expressway approach
Generally speaking, only traffic from the north get to fly this approach into LGA. That is, flying southerly high above the city, while descending into a left turn and easing into the expressway pattern used when runway 31 is in use. This video shows the approach nicely with good clarity and no shaking.
This has gotta be the most spectacular visual approach to any US city. It's amazing, other than landing in Los Angeles at night, I can't see any other arrival being this awesome.
@phillyslasher You're absolutely correct although I like flying into LaGuardia when they go up the Hudson and the skyline of Manhattan is on the right. It's especially awesome on a real clear day when one can view virtually all of NYC, the Sound the ocean on out to Long Island and see the mass of skyscrapers. That's why I love flying into LaGuardia.
this is for DaGR8Twon. ur a punk u aint got any respect for the staff that get u to the airport safe. thats why people clap because they landed the plane safe. scum bag
ppl clap on the plane when it lands because it means thank god we made it safe nothing happen nothing went wrong thank go for jesus we made it safely thats y ppl clap
Without a doubt one of the world's most exciting approaches. I have often thought on this approach that the pilot might as well just stab the left wingtip into the ground and pivot around it!
Seeing one landing into LaGuardia as it flew over me under 100 feet as I am driving westbound on the Grand Central Parkway reminds me of Hong Kong old Kai Tak Airport... :-)
why? because there just happy they got there safe and to give the pilot appreciation that he or she landed them safely. what if something wnt wrong, then what? u die helo!!!!!!!!
@DaGR8Twon if you had the same skill and the same training hours as the pilot that lands your plane without killing you then ppl would clap at you too. dont be jealous.
@DaGR8Twon You hate when people happily show cheer and thanks? You hate positivity? I can understand thinking the clapping is pointless from your perspective or that landing a plane isn't thrilling, but hating people being happy? You should rethink your priorities.
@DaGR8Twon I only find it funny. Especially when ppl clap b4 the plane is fully stopped. I have no fear of flying, I actually love it, but I feel ironic when ppl who r pissing n their pants clap b4 the plane is fully stopped because I think: "hey guys, it ain't over till it's over. y r u clapping?"
A wonderful video, thank you. Over 25 years ago I lived in Flushing, Queens, and many times I would see planes on that same approach when I would be driving on the Van Wyck Expressway. It's nice for once "seeing" that same approach from the air.
@raycal515 I, too, used to live in Flushing for more than 1 year (Nov 2008 - Dec 2009) and everyday I took no.7 subway train to Manhattan (took me right to Time Square @ 42 St/Broadway). @capazopenguin It's safe to turn on electronic devices that are not emitting radio signals, such as a camera. Cabin crews tell the passengers to turn off electronic devices so when there's an emergency, passengers can focus to their safety first.
I have flown into La Guardia hundreds of times, but have never flown that pattern. Unusual approach coming in southbound over Manhattan. Nice piece of camera work.
The skyline looks so empty without the towers:'( first time I saw it without the towers I cried a little:'( no joke! Just feels like a part is always missing with them gone:'(
2-The captan did a great jobs of landing smoothly. I fly frequently from NY-Fl and I've had some very tough landing. Thats a tough angle to land in when he made that final turn. I looked like he wasnt going to make it.
too bad our weather wasn't so great on my first trip to New York which was about 3 weeks ago. Our landing at LaGuardia was pretty scary from high winds and the view wasn't great either . Oh well... hopefully next time :)
and we've had a very unusually weird winter too here in NY..my landings into NY (JFK or LaGuardia) are usually great with excellent views of this city. Hopefully next time you fly in, you'll get a good view and landing..cheers!
Nice... if the pilot announces an approach to Runway 31 and you are seated on the left side of the plane... your eyes will soon have candy! Remember - the runway they land on cooresponds to the direction of the wind - a NW wind or something close would make that the active runway.
it looks like a a321 , big jumbos like 747s,767s,a330s,a340s dont land here, this is like for small jets , theirs barley any jets that cross any oceans alot of the airlines in LGA are national based airlines , only airlines i know go across oceans are the ones that head down towards the caribeen , but all the other airplanes all those jumbos you see that come from japan, austrilla, south america, europe, india , the middle east , all those planes that take more than 5 hours to get to nyc go to JFK.
Put in Flying into LaGuardia, or LGA Approach over the Hudson to view best approach on clear day for skyline views of Manhattan, NYC. That will give viewers best view into a NY airport with the hook over The Bronx or Westchester suburbs for 22 runway. Last min can be harrowing for travelers if not familiar with the way in just feet over the water. Just think of 8.2 million ppl in our largest, most exiting city.
Answer to Deino-Yes, the UN Complex is evident at 0:20, the white sided, thin building that resembles a domino on the East River. Central Park was not featured in video because vid started south of the Park, but can see in distance at 2:00 very slightly in front of Hudson River. It's a runway 31 approach over Flushing Bay from a northern city like Boston, Buffalo or Canada. Not 4 approach, that would bring you over rooftops of Queens. 22 is best on a clear day. Fly up Hudson and city on right!
Aren't planes not allowed to fly over mid/downtown since 9/11? I'm probably remembering something wrong. Whatever.

I haven't been on a plane in a few years. They always announced "Turn off all electronic equipment" during take offs and landings. Has that changed?

By the looks of the video, I am 99.7% sure the aircraft came in from the north, turned around and flew the expressway visual 31
