In this day, we have more meat than any human before us ever saw. Humans never ate meat like we do now, only the wealthy, but even then was it sparse.
Obesity is a LARGE problem in the u.s. What it is is that the large corporations have found the ultimate, long-lasting solution for themselves to make money off of people being sick. How is it that they do this? They strip the food of basic nutrients enough that they crave it but not so little that there are none to begin with. Diabetes, from a study I read, states that it is not from eating just sugar, but a combination of both sugar and red meat.
Have you ever been to the US? Have you ever seen the diversity or different communities that we have? The US has several different cultures and viewpoints, and although a major group (34%) are overweight, it doesn't mean that you should penalize other Americans, and claim that they are "stupid when it comes to food." I am very healthy, I never eat beath and excercise everyday. I am by no means overweight, and I am an American. I'm sorry if that's something you can't comprehend.
Dude, that speech is WAY to complicated and long for americans to get it! Keep it short, Richard Carmona! They cant concentrate that long. ya have to do it in 'easay speach"
I don't understand why all these people from other countries try to generalize us into being into one group, fat, stupid, arrogant, and evil. I think its a result of ignorance, and although there are such people in our country, there are also some in yours. It's equivalent of us seeing a British Actor's bad teeth and automatically assuming everyone in Britain has bad teeth. It doesn't make sense and is baseless.
@redhead5651 34% is not "one in a bunch". It's one out of three. One third of your nations is obese and we shouldn't generalize? Stop eating yourselves to death already. Your bodies don't need fast food, it contains nothing of interest for your organism. When you're hungry after McDonald's - it's not because your body wants more - no, it wants something ELSE, something that has the nutrients that are lacking in your organism. You people are not very bright, when it comes to food.

He's right about the WORKFORCE! If too many people are fat, where are we going to get soldiers, pilots, sailers and Policemen and women, and firemen from? Actually, if everyone was a vegetarian (or at least ate meat very sparingly) there would be a massive abundance of food, and the world could be fed many times over. For example, every year in the UK we feed livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while 30,000,000 die of starvation. 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater. It's all about the food chain/trophic levels.
We need to outlaw meat, period. For the sake of the billions of chickens, cows, and pigs murdered and tortured each year. I couldn't care less if people want to drop dead from a heart attack. Let them. That's their business.
If we legislate, we need to legislate for the right reason: something that no one who votes for Democrats or Republicans is mentally capable of comprehending.
Legislate against the FORCED torture of OTHERS - i.e. nonhumans - not ruining your OWN body.
Obesity is a side issue. Yes, problems exist with being fat, caused both health effects and by prejudices from others.
The main issue = veganism for animal rights. I have been vegan since 1984 to prevent innocent cows, pigs, chickens (all of whom are vegetarian themselves) from needlessly being bred and murdered.
I am fat. Lack of exercise due to arthritis.
Help solve the Peta X-Meat Prize to genetically engineer synthetic meat without breeding an entire consious animal!

@Diatonic135 One can avoid chronic diseases without eating meat. In fact, let's look at probably the most fit people in the entire world: Shaolin Monks. Being strict Buddhists, they are lacto vegetarians.
@0megamanX there are plenty of sick and dead athletes to show that fitness does not confer health.
physical fitness does not prevent disease, including obesity. go to any gym and watch the 300lb club working out 4 hours a week and getting fatter. ask the personal trainers about their IBS and their Crohn's. ask the college athletes about their chronic pain and joint injuries. find out how many athletes are chronically depressed.
etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. x 1,000
Here in Louisiana I am nagged for NOT eating pork fat fried in pork fat with a side of fried dough coated with sugar. I don't care what it is, someone here tried to deep fry it b/c it tastes great. As a result most people here my age are HUGE! I just eat grilled fish or chicken & lots of veggies. It's great and I couldn't feel any better about myself regardless of being called a "dumb liberal." It has been a year since I have eaten fast food, and don't miss it.
The only reason the U.S. is ranked 29th in the world in life expectancy is because of our hospitals. We'll be 129th in the next 50-75 years, no question. I've known more people to die from heart attacks and various forms of cancer than I can begin to name.
You know it's gotten really bad when at work, people make faces and point at me for eating healthy. You know; fruits, veggies, wheat bread, nuts, beans, etc.
I look around and see others eating Burger King, cheetos, Oreos, and the like, while drinking Coke(diet Coke), energy drinks, Gatorade, etc.
Some people think just because their Grandpa lived to 102, that they have good genes, and therefore they can eat junkfood and no veggies for life. It doesn't work that way.
When he mentioned health costs, I got thinking about the medical deduction from my income. $189.58 every two weeks. That's $4929.08 a year. I rarely need medical attention, making the deduction even harder to take. What many people don't know is that the dietary guidelines were established by the Department of Agriculture, which has a vested interest in food sales.

I really don't care for this stupid "surgeon general" position in the federal gov't. Sure, having an NIH, CDC, and other public health organizations is one thing, but, my god, don't have some physician or surgeon telling me or my family how to live our lives OUTSIDE the doctor's office! That's insane. It's just as insane as the ONDCP and the "drug czar" telling us not to do drugs. The state serves the people, not the other way around. I don't want gov't babying me like a child.

Life's not worth living if you have to abide by these strict-as-fuck FDA guidelines on eating certain servings of food everyday. NO ONE can live up to those insane standards! Too many servings and food groups. I fucking hate vegetables, and I don't care for fruits almost as much. I usually eat meat, eggs, junk food, chese, other dairy, maybe some grains, and that's about it. I'm not gonna limit myself and eat crap I hate. You're never gonna 'win' the "war on obesity", so give it up.
Plus, what doctors and this guy don't realize is that it's all about genetics! Genetics play a big part in how long you'll live based on what foods you eat. Some people can afford to eat more unhealthy stuff and still live longer than others. Don't act like genes don't play a part. You medical guys admit that family history is a big factor in whether or not one person will be prone to a certain disease, so why ignore genes on this issue? I may live to be 40 or 50 or 90, depending on DNA.
Your DNA wont save you after eating Ajax or drinking bleach. Monounsaturated fats are poison to the body, as are most of the chemical dyes and food substitutes that are disguised as 'ok to eat' by artifical flavors. I wouldn't support a government mandated diet or portions, that's just insane, but I do expect that my government weed out the poisons that are causing my immune system and my body to function below peak--I don't have the resources to know what is put into my food, do you?
Yeah, sorry. You're correct. I should have checked that before I posted. I meant to indicate that transfats have been commonly used for decades, but in fact raise our bad cholesterol--calling it a poison is metaphoric, but accurate. My point is that without an agency to protect us from an uncaring industry, they'd continue to put lead in our paint, asbestos in our drywall, and as we've recently seen in China--sell industrial cleaner as childrens toothpaste. Carmona isn't a bad guy for his views.
You should know however that mono and poly-unsaturates are actually good for you in the proper quantities and actually essential for health. Its interesting, recent research has actually shown that naturally occurring trans-fats are beneficial in some way to our health, i don't have all the literature on the subject, but its out there. Stay away from manufactured transfats, natural saturated fats can make up asmuch as 10% of total caloric intake in a healthydiet.
Mono and poly-unsaturates are beneficial yes, BUT only in moderate quantities. While saturates are good for you , but in small quantities. You start going too far in either case and its trouble.
you fat disgusting slob, who told u its 100% genetic?
u just make shit up to feel good abt ur disgusting lifestyle.
any intro psych course will teach u tht many things lyk iq etc r an interaction between ur genes and the environment, not 100% genetic or 100% environmental.
i honestly dont care if fat slobs die early, its just tht i am forced to pay for healthcare for these freaks by the govt, fuk u and i wish u an early death.
a lot of ppl i know are those fat slobs...it's almost shocking how obese they can be! some of them weigh as much as healthy 7 footers even though they are nowhere as tall!
Yeah its not 100% genertic, its 30% genetic at most.
However don't be so quick to judge these people, many of them are from families where you have to eat what you can get , AND are bombarded non stop by fast food advertising, AND have to go out of their way to eat healthy, where most the restaurants are fast food joints. Its not nice to be so judgemental as if we lived their lives in their shoes, would we fare any better? Who can say?
There is no such thing as a disease that will make you morbidly obese. Perhaps there are those that may never be thin, but there is no disease that will make have over 30% body fat. Evolution would have weeded that out. We are the fattest nation in the world. People in other countries have thyroid, polcystic, etc. They are not obese. As a person in science and medicine this is an awful excuse. If none of these genetics can make you more prone to addiction (food), but no one has to be.
@Mostkeptscrt I lost 60 pounds in 14 months from straight exercising and dieting. I went from 217 pounds to 158 pounds and my waist now is 30 inches. There is a cure to obesity
Whoo69 is is your right to be overweight if you please, but you shouldn't come down on the system for trying to help others.
The ethical dilemma is this. Obese people likely WILL opt out of exercise programmes if they are allowed to, and it is an infringrment on their human rights to force them to exercise, yet if authorities don't intervene, the Western world is going to be in serious trouble down the line.
Life isn't worth living if you feel great and healthy. That is the comment of someone who dosen't want to bother. As far as no one being able to do it? I eat within the FDA recommended calories every day. I go to the gym four times a week three years I have not eaten any fast food or anything fried in six years. I am someone. I care about myself. People tell me i'm lucky to have a nice body. I'm not lucky I work at it.

the "terror within"? Oh, please! Way to abuse the art of metaphor. Health nuts have been talking about this "obesity epidemic" (epidemic has to do with contagious diseases, not behavior) for like the past 15 years or more! Just face it: We're never gonna go back to being super-healthy. People are fed up with that. They want to be left alone and have the freedom to eat what the fuck they want. Besides, it's not that big a deal. If people wanna risk heart attacks, let em. More power to em.

I seriously doubt the claims made by so-called experts that 2/3rds of American adults and a HUGE chunk of American kids are overweight. Sure, more Americans are overweight than before, but I live on a college campus with 25,000+ other students, and I don't see a whole lot of fat students, not nearly as many as THEY tell us in the media. It's bs. I see plenty of fit people and fat people. The health nuts just use this as an excuse to force their way of life on us or make gov't do it.

SO what do the authorites do.

People are starving all over the world, somebody has to take the food out of their mouths. And yes, that was sarcasm.
