Jake Shields was one of only two North Americans to bring home a medal. While Jake was beating Diego on this mat Leo Santos (7 time world BJJ champ) tapped out GSP in 90 seconds on another mat. (on side bar) this was opening round so St Pierre & Sanchez were out.

Four bouts later in the Semi's Shields choked out Santos in 90 seconds (on side bar) Both GSP & Shields were purple belts, almost everyone else was black belt.

Then Shields won the Pro Absolutes, beat 3 time HW BJJ world champ.

When referring to MMA fighters on the level these guys are, not many are what you would consider 'better' than the other -sure, someone has to win the fight, but in MMA anybody can get caught. Fighters careers are made & broken by NOT getting caught & pounded out. Like any other athlete, fighters can have an off-night & not perform to the best of their abilities. It's the ability to NOT get caught with that one punch that will end their night that makes a superior fighter Anderson Silva RULES!

Shields has great jiu jitsu but i think sanchez' isnt too much worse and with his striking where it is, i think he'd win in a full mma fight. Theyre both bad ass though.

I don't doubt that Shields is good. I read where Fitch said Shields has the best top-position game at welterweight in MMA.

Shields didn't look that good recently against Paul Daley, though.

When you compare the Shields fight with the Daley, Alessio fight you see how good Shields is. Daley came in on a run of six KO's and ended up the 7th. straight finish for Shields,then goes out and KO's another good fighter. Different levels.

I'm afraid you're new to the sports if you're relying on MMA math.

As MMA fighters, Sanchez and Fitch are both superior to Shields. Jake has rudimentary (at best) striking and average takedowns.. quite disappointing considering he wrestled collegiately. He's hell on wheels on the ground, but he'd never be able to submit or control Sanchez or Fitch... and he'd labor taking the fight to the floor.

@13seven13 daley has no wrestling he has never beaten a top level wrestler so I dont think beating daley was that big of a deal for shields remember koscheck also destroyed daley. but shields does present definite problems for gsp, but I also think kampman will be shields toughest fight in his career so far, kampman has great wrestling and jiu jitsu along with some of the best boxing in ufc.

Obviously there is a big difference between MMA and Submission Grappling. Diego got armbarred by Marcelo, he didn't "go the distance" and I have watched both sports for over 3 years now. I was there live at UFC 76 and no, Fitch owned Diego and a split decision was bullshit.

Yes, if by "owned" you mean, was taken down multiple times by a smaller guy, inflicted no damage and was nearly submitted three times, then yeah, Fitch owned Sanchez.

But you're right, the split decision was BS, it should've went to Sanchez.

There's controvery whether Sanchez tapped vs Garcia or not. Regardless, he was right around 22 years old and lasted nearly 12 minutes with the top grappler in the world. How many other guys have done that?

"which Shield submitted" in a freaking grappling match! shield can't fight...he can grapple, thats it! Fitch and sanchez are more complete fighters! and they'd beat Shield from what i have seen from shield.....the kid can't throw a decent strike...thats why he tries...in everysingle fight, to take his opponent down, he absolutely has zero chance against a good striker that has some good take down defense!
