Plus, I think that, unfortunately, Americans don't have too much interest in what's happening outside the US. (That's also why places like Haiti or Africa have a bad image. No one ever talks about them except for charities who want to help the poor. No one has enough interest in these places to report the good things, so they don't get reported.)

There are white immigrants from Africa who have actually had to fight for the right to be called African American because they are not black. But basically, the ethnicity is what we all have in common although we are from different countries. You are a black woman who was born in Haiti. I am a black woman who was born in America. I personally don't like the term African American, it has way too many definitions and it is not defined enough. To me it means anyone of African descent that is American. One who identifies as so, doesn't mean they're Black.
People should be free to call & identify themselves however they want, as long as you aren't trying to degrade another ethnicity. And ones identity shouldn't be solely defined by ancestral origin. I'm Haitian too & yes I also feel Haiti is more connected/similar to some African cultures. When a child is hurting, though, it is important for the elders to reach out to that child in love. I hope that those Africans who do see the condition that their people are in in America will reach out to them so that the youth will know who they are and stop acting out. The gangs and all of the things that so many of our young men get into is because they need something real and valuable to connect to.

Many black Americans are aware of that history as well. In America, we also had a revolt that you rarely are taught about, if at all. The black that were kidnapped, many were prisoners of war, my family were never slaves but the did participate in revolts against it! The first time I saw their moms I was in awe of the beauty of their skin, their language and their dress. But they looked at me like a stranger. So I felt that my kinship was an dark secret. Plus, I think that, unfortunately, Americans don't have too much interest in what's happening outside the US. (That's also why places like Haiti or Africa have a bad image. There are white immigrants from Africa who have actually had to fight for the right to be called African American because they are not black. But basically, the ethnicity is what we all have in common although we are from different countries. You are a black woman who was born in Haiti. I am a black woman who was born in America. I personally don't like the term African American, it has way too many definitions and it is not defined enough. To me it means anyone of African descent that is American. One who identifies as so, doesn't mean they're Black.

People should be free to call & identify themselves however they want, as long as you aren't trying to degrade another ethnicity. And ones identity shouldn't be solely defined by ancestral origin. I'm Haitian too & yes I also feel Haiti is more connected/similar to some African cultures. Thats cause our independence was won early compared to other countries & Euro influence lessened as African customs were able to make back their way & in our culture. I would personally ignore the israelites.

When a child is hurting, though, it is important for the elders to reach out to that child in love. I hope that those Africans who do see the condition that their people are in in America will reach out to them so that the youth will know who they are and stop acting out. The gangs and all of the things that so many of our young men get into is because they need something real and valuable to connect to.

I care deeply about my roots and have cried over not being able to trace them further than the numbers assigned to slave men. I think lots of blacks in America feel this way. You are Haitian right? I have a great respect for Haitian history! Your peole defeated the most powerful European empires of that time during the Haitian revolution. Many black Americans are aware of that history as well. In America, we also had a revolt that you rarely are taught about, if at all. The black that were kidnapped, many were prisoners of war, my family were never slaves but the did participate in revolts against it! I know my history like the back of my hand, and i have an identity and a language! Africa is a continent filled with languages I DO NOT SPEAK! I'm not even a christian because that isn't my culture.

The first time I saw their moms I was in awe of the beauty of their skin, their language and their dress. But they looked at me like a stranger. So I felt that my kinship was an dark secret. You can't understand this because Haiti is predominately black and has held on strongly to African culture. You aren't African-Haitian.

There are Haitians in America who have no desire to be assumed as African Americans because they were actually born in Haiti and so they are Haitian.
