I wish that THIS would have been the lead single, once "The Dreaming" album was released. The title track was chosen, and it's a brave masterpiece. Yet, it is even more challenging than "Sat In Your Lap", which was released a year before the lp, & perhaps too difficult for radio. This song incorperates more "familiar" Bush balladry, with all of the exciting drama & adventure & new areas that she was exploring intact. Not a traditional pop song, but a brilliant one! It could have been a hit!
Hey Tadge! I dig SUSPENDED IN GAFFA, also...but it was released as a single, much more widely so than NIGHT OF THE SWALLOW, which was only issued in Ireland...if memory serves. GAFFA is wonderful, but is also very obtuse...which is why I stand by NIGHT as my personal top choice, for the reasons stated above. Also, simply because it has a more clear "story", not unlike WUTHERING HEIGHTS, or even CLOUDBUSTING.
@ChrisOtheBigC hey- i love night and gaffa. i suppose the dreaming was emis nightmare as they couldnt really see promotional singles to release! I also agreee, gaffa is v obstuse..can you imagine the video for night? wouldve been great!
The Dreaming is a masterpiece! Only "Sat in Your Lap" could be more polished; I always skip it when I listen to the album.
Plus, the quality of sounds is wonderful. Hounds of Love sounds so dampened and blurry compared to this. IMO, Kate should have stayed in top studios instead of building her own...
The build up, crescendo and then dramatic fall make this song a real masterpiece. Something only Kate could do. Her voice spans all tones and emotions. Wonderful piece of music.
@MrRichiehamburg Yes, that's what I think too. It's my own very favourite among my Kate favourites, because of that exquisite blend of melody, feelings and energy. The 3 dimensions of music spendidly composed. Majestic and very, very heart-felt. Plus it's got variation (ethnic) and a great story.
I think this is my favorite song in the entire world, and I listen to a lot of music, and I've been listening to it and singing it for many years, she writes the most amazing music... this for me is her masterpiece.
Love, love love this song and is this a Rhodesian Ridgeback!! 4:31 Hoping to get one in the near future! What incredible taste this woman has. Wish Kate Bush had been my wife!!
Funny how some of you felt about this album. The Dreaming has always been my favourite, from the first time I heard it. Whenever I wanted to do something creative, like drawing a painting, but coudn't quite get into it, I listened to The Dreaming, and instantly got this special feeling of being detached from time, that is often called "the flow". And while The Dreaming initiates "the flow" , Aerial IS the flow.
yes WOOTY WOOT WOOT.....Just another incredible amazing example of how incredible this GENIUS is! She relentlesly stirs every emotion I have inside. Not to mention her intense outer beauty. I simply love this woman in every way
I love irish music too. Actually Kate Bush 's mother was from Ireland. In 1995 Kate recorded a song in Irish entitled Mná na hÉireann (Women of Ireland). That song is included in the album Common Ground (Voices Of Modern Irish Music). You can listen to it on YouTube
she sounds so passionate singing, and when she says "...something to show for my miserable life..." the whole song just is tied together in that pulsing melody. my favorite song ever. <3
the dreaming is a unbelievable record ...to the point where it's hard to believe it exists...it's a magic sound where it like floats ... never for ever to the red shoes all Kate's music has this magic never done by Tori or any other woman artist...Olivia,Joni,Dusty same league but not as a wizard like Kate
For some reason, this video plays really softly on my computer, which is a shame, because like many Kate Bush songs, this is one that should be played at a loud volume.
this song is sick. i remember kate saying something to the effect that she and the musicians cried when it was finally completed. truly a masterpiece.
I'm not surprised. The emotion in this song transcends its own context. I cried when I first heard it as well, still do; especially at the final, hopeless and resolute fade out, "....but you're not a swallow...!"
This woman is so cool. Supposed feminist Germaine Greer once said that no woman has ever produced a work of art compareable to Shakespeare/Oscar Wilde etc.
Obviusly Ms Greer hasn't heard of Kate, because she more than stands up to any male writer or artist. Musically speaking, she's my Shakespeare.
My friend taped this on a cassette for me years ago. I mis-heard the lyrics and used to think she was singing about being a witch whisking up potions in the moonlight and astral travelling to higher planes...unfortunately the correct lyrics are a bit less esoteric...
What more could you ask with her in that red dress. Delicious. The Dreaming in my ultimate Kate album. Bold, adventurous, progressive, pure brilliants. From beginning to end it's a wonderous journey
The first several times I heard this when it was released I think I cried each time! It one of the ultimate pure Bush songs and brings back a wonderful time for me.
Fantastic song from such a great album (my personal favourite of hers, actually). It's a shame it did so badly comercially was panned so by the critics, just because she refused to be a creative pawn to EMI, something that the vast majority of 'artists' were in 1982. I guess people just weren't ready for this side of Bush yet, but with the recent success of Aeriel, a concept album mind, it's safe to say that the record-buying public ARE now ready for 'letting the madness in'.
I love this song. I used to have the vinyl. It's the quirkiest and best of her albums. Was it the Dreaming? Thank you for posting, how much fun to see all the photos.
i love this song for the intense instrument parts at the end, and of course how imaginative she is with her lyrics. you can really tell she writes her own stuff. yay!
That's great, Dawn - some great photos and one of my favourite Kate songs in one package. I'm not going to get much work done between now and home time :p

I was asking whether it was a Ridgeback... Perhaps you're right... Got a couple of cats instead... Lovely channel, by the way ;-)
warsteiner112 2 years ago
I may be wrong, you may be right. I didn't see the ridge on the back? It's a good excuse to watch the video for the 500th time, right?
Also the color, the dog in the video seems more blue than brown.
I love cats too!
I know that Kate has a dog now, I am so curious as to what kind he is.

In may the Telegraph published all time list of the best British songwriters.
Kate Bush is the runner up! Only after John Lennon and before Paul McCartney, Elton John
and Mick Jagger. I don't like too much this kind of list but it's good that many people
appreciate an artist so wonderful and elaborate like Kate is. She's unique!
