A friend of mine did her zoology Doctorate in Rearing Orphan animals, and how to provide an environment that best fits the orphan's needs.
As part of that, she hand-raised a tiger cub whose mother couldn't feed it due an infection as the result of a c-section. I was so jealous. It was like she was the mother...of a freakin' tiger!

baffles me too, but lion cubs necks are pretty strong, and she carries it just behind her canines so she is in fact cradling the cub in her jaw.

Just 'cuz they're strong doesn't mean that they always use their full strength.
They can be surprisingly gentle too.
