the biggest problem the series had was that there were no great characters, SG-1 and Atlantis had extremely lovable and funny characters. Universe had none.. I’ve also didnt seen any of the great Stargate humor..SGU = Smallville Galactica United.Keep soaps and teenie crap and all that drama queen garbage out of my sci-fi.If you like that shit go watch Twilight! Hell get Onel,samantha and daneil on the communication device and they would have been on earth in the 4 episode!
Excuse me, I totally agree with this guy. He uploaded this 3 years ago, and he thinks like me. Why would we even invest in Stargate Universe, when 'they' delibrately ended atlantis to start universe. Also, at one stage Atlantis had enough ratings to keep even SG1 alive. I bought every season of Atlantis, and this is what happens?. To make it even worse, one of the writers said in a interview that he blames the fans for not giving Universe a chance. WTF. You should have seen the comments. lol
I got about maybe seven episodes in then I stopped. It felt like a bad soap opera to me with a few problems. First and foremost: when the water was contaminated. I'm sorry, but i'm pretty sure that if it were SG1 or Atlantis they would've sent in experts using the stones to see what was going on. Especially since, if i remember right, Jack Oneil was one of the people that they mentioned the problem too. But i didn't watch many episodes, so i can't really criticize the whole series... yet.
i was watching Syfy the other day. They were airing Casino Royale, the 007 movie. How the hell is that Science fiction! Goodness Syfy I don't even watch you anymore. You killed the shows I loved. The X-Files, Tremors, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, And then Stargate Universe. Just kill anything that has to do with science fiction! They are just becoming CBS. They should of made SGU on Friday nights too, more people would of watched it then. F you SyFy. No one likes you.
@LtColPayPay SGU started on Friday. It tanked horribly in the ratings, something which "The Gates" (SG-1 and SGA) never did. SciFi Friday in those days was a force to be reckoned with. The trash that has followed in its footsteps is a shadow of that former glory. Granted, Season 2 improved significantly, but the horrid performance of Season 1 is what caused SyFy to move it around the schedule.

I saw the last 4 episodes in a back to back marathon that's how I got hooked then when I went back and saw all 40 I am convinced it has the best developed characters in any science fiction show...Rush's character is AWESOME!!!! If you look at ratings then go eat at the slop bucket with the rest of the pigs.

ok so the porblem with this show is that its trying to be be diffrent porblem is it fails because its sticking to the forumla and playing it safe by relying on cliches. and thats not good if this really wants to succeed it needed/needs to get of rid cliches and take risks. i do give it credit for trying to be human but its held back by the porblems i just said and i dont think it can fix them (mostly because of time buddget and censor constraits)
SG-U can work the way it's going. If it wasn't so 'explict' in scenes and toning down the gore factor would help. (On that note of gore, what an old idea to steal! Snakes burying into chests and exploding out of Chloe? Talk about copyright.) Basically if Rush and Young just get it together I think the show will greatly improve.
SGU is all about the bad boy or naughty girl image.....its all about the "edgy" and "angst"......this is not RDA's stargate.....look at McGyver....its light hearted and innocent.....then he kept the same tone..

This is not a Stargate Universe- you don't reviewed the show, you just said what you don't like about the fact it was realesed. Saing you don't like the show just because the older ones wre canceled is not quite responsible. I was a big SG-1 fan and I was even more sad because SGU is getting canceled than the fact Atlantis and SG-1 were, because it is a superior series in my opinion- it had a lot of character development, special effects, a real plot.

SG:A it was great but that last two seasons really showed that the writers were exhausted with SG:A. This also (partly) explains why SG:U strays from away from SG-1 & SG:A. I would've loved to have seen SG:A continue + SG:U, but with $2million per episode being put into SG:U it wasnt possible. I appreciate the effort cause the show, visually, is stunning. The Gateway never looked so good. I grew up with SG and honestly I support SG instead of being bitter and cry about changes.

What should have happened is : Atlantis not get canceled and we still get SGU.... I guess none of us would have been THAT mad on the SG producers then. What really bothers me, SGA was canceled exactly when it really made sense - Atlantis going by Home (Earth)... On the other hand, I kinda started loving the SGU - despite of all the offensive things Wright said... I think, now - in near mid 2nd season - things are going somewhere.. more stories are developed, you know...
I had nothing against SG-1 but it was kinda stupid at some points. SG:A was bad. REALLY bad. The episodes were all the same and the plot never seemed to move forward (kinda the same thing with SG-1 but at least it was entertaining)

they figured that the Battlestar Galactica fans were younger and would buy more products than the SG1 / SGA fans they made SGU to be a version of BSG to get those fans..SGU is a soap opera not a stargate franchise

I agree with you man, SGU is okey but srsly it's abit of slap in the face after watching 10 season SG1 and 5 season Atlantis. It's gotten alittle better in Season2 but I hope they make something out of it since the whole first season was just like "Flying in this starship allday long, flying in the starship while I sing this song".
Because they realized only nerds like the show and they tried to mix Lost and BSG in the new SG-universe. You have to realize this is needed in order to get more funding since we the old nerds just download from the internets.

Well his thoughts would be "I told you so" because it looks as if SGU will be canceled by the end of this season because the so called new audience that the producers went searching for with the new show are abandoning it.
Proof - look at da viewer numbers of the Ssn 1 premiere n the numbers now. started frm 2.2-2.3 mil, now 0.9 mil. This is not because the original fans left the show. Its becoz SGU's new approach was rejected by the new audience, jst like the old fans did.
sgu is just as good as the rest of the franchise. the first 3 seasons are gonna suck but that is the standard for all the series. they need the time to develop the characters. star trek tng 1st 2 seasons sucked but the later ones didn't i think if u give it time who knows what could happen. for all we know they will install wormhole drive on the Odyssey and meet up with destiny

your so right When SG-1 SG-Atlantis, and BSG were all able to be watched back to back, it was the BEST freakin time on Scifi TV ever!!! sga shouldn't have been canceled and the ending felt too rushed, it should have been two episodes or at least 90 min. The Vegas episode before was awesome though.

As a long time Stargate fan, I just can't get into SGU. The directing is aggravating - Even when two people are simply having a conversation, the camera is shaking around all over the place to add "tension", I suppose.. "Fluff", to try to make the show more contemporary, and it comes off completely hollow. The show is barely about exploration any more, half the time we don't even see the gate. The characters seem to have a lot of trouble getting over pettiness to work together.. It grates on me.
Quit your nerd talk guys... this is the first science fiction show that did not focus a lot on crazy imaginative topic every episode, which half the times, did not end up anywhere near the actual storyline. This show, however, goes thorugh all sorts of desperate human minds and evey actor in this show are doing hell of a job. This show has a solid continuation of story every episode and has great potential for seasons to come.
The story of the Stargate is simply genius. It enables writers to create endless sagas. Personally -- watching your video...you make me retreat further back into hiding. See, I am an attractive, socially active, popular member of society. I can't bring up my love for Sci-Fi to people. When I wear my BSG uniform for Halloween to work at my corporate office, people *freak out*. So now I have to hide it. I have to fit in, blend in. I have a life. I'm a grown up. Fantasy is neat. Reality counts.

Yeah they have gone through a few things but their characters don't have any real depth. Everyone else is top notch especially Rush....especially Rush! When they showed why he is such an ass and so dejected you really felt sorry for him. Besides...when you die in SGU Your ass is dead and laying in a puddle of blood. There's no fainting with ripped shirts here.

I love debunking foolish asides like that. Still, you can develop characters until the cows come home, but you conveniently ignore the fact that SG-1 and SGA chars had their flaws as well. It just so happened that in either of those shows, they didn't drop all of them on the viewer in 1-2 episodes as they did with SGU. S1=fail.
@fmcc0904 What show isn't going to have writing issues in Season 1. Ticks weren't their biggest flaw. Their biggest flaw was playing around with the "ship is alive" story line that they abandoned about 2 or 3 times. But can you honestly say that if the ratings for Seinfield or the Office in their first season should've dictated whether the network should've committed to a 2nd or 3rd. If that's the case shows would only be written for one season. Beyond that who ends in a cliff hanger!!!!
@hiyukenmusic Yeah, except in the case of Seinfeld, that came from a well-known comedian and the network committed to more than one or two seasons from the get-go. The same can be said for The Office (which I personally detest) because the UK version had run for quite some time and they figured it would pick up a following. SGU got a 2-season deal at the cost of a 6th season of SGA. That was an epic fail right there. SG-1 and SGA boosted each other in rating when they ran concurrently.

You guys are bitching way too much.The premise(ie stargates)is cool.An ancient alien race plants these things all over the universe.Thats cool.But then sg-1 and atlantis comes out,and the whole philosophical and(seriously)thought-inducing expectation gets shattered.It's too comedic,most of the time unintentionally,and boiled down to not being too difficult for any of its viewers to understand-going for lowest common denominator.SG-U is actually more serious, and will hopefully become more clever

The creators pissed off their original fan base for a new audience. Which was really stupid. I don't mind some change, but come on. The character drama really killed this show. They better start embracing true stargate heritage in season 2 or that is it for this spin off. That means more action, adventure, and yes humor!!! Again i don't mind some drama, but keep it to a minimum. I do want this show to succeed. It has the potential.
@dtuj I concur. I feel that the premise is sound. It's similar to Atlantis, a team separated from earth, but also has the potential to be a bit more of a horror show in that they're not really prepared. However, I feel that they made two mistakes: they tried to combine Teen Drama shows with what is basically a military sci-fi show, and those two don't mesh well. The second issue is that they almost immediately provided a connection to Earth, one that I find irritating as a constant plot point.
@Jallorn Yeah I totally agree about the connection to Earth thing. They were supposed to be stranded! In ALL senses. Now, having the stones, each character can experience pretty much everything from Earth. Some enjoyed sex too if memory serves well.

SGU is a great show i love it, like to death. Defo one of my fav shows atm. Its great to see a new look in Stargate world and the intense story-line has me coming back for more, don't get me wrong i love Sg-sg1 and Sga but how many different show can you expect them to do where the story structure always remains the same.

i didnt see what was wrong with stargate for younger viewers as it was i mean i remember watching sg1 when i was 6 (im 17 now) and lovin it true i didnt understand any of the sience stuff i just watched it for the fights and cool images then when i was older i started to understand all the sience and loved it even more.
to much whining. did anybody ever think after 10 season of SG1 the writer had run out of ideas to keep the show interesting. sometimes trying something new works really well. SGU is different, more dramatic less scifi, not my kind but i watch it. Nothing can compare to SG1 but it run it's course and it was time to close that chapter.

Same here, I loved SG1! Atlantis was alright, too. But I disliked SGU. But I always disliked Battlestar Galactica. It's just....boring and generic. Still better than SGU though.

I do agree with your comments, the problem is the executives, the ones who actually pay to put the show on the air, don't communicate with fans, they have no idea that former stargate fans are hating stargate universe because it's so far from what they loved about the original series.
The last episode "Lost" was the best episode ever for me, they really need to keep taking us to cool planets and getting into the sci-fi stuff, and stay away from the onboard ship drama.
Tried watching the other Stargates, couldn't get into them. Not even the help of Ben Browder and Claudia Black could make me stay long enough to see what was going on. So thus, I tried SGU and find it more pleasing and to me better story telling.
I kinda like the show. I guess I'm just a member of the "target audience".
I admit they're taking their sweet time elaborating on their environment. It took forever for them to get to the "blue aliens" and they still don't know everything about the ship. But what they've presented so far is pretty interesting. The worlds are unique and the overall approach to them is more realistic. I also think characterization does work well, as long as they use it more sparingly in the future.
btw. on their wiki page i read that they are focusing more on character development then anything else in sg universe and i mean,there is no human being so stupid and emotional as their characters...they're making a SF soup opera...it's worst then caprica

My opinion is.... I found SG-1 and Atlantis both shallow and cheezy, but I enjoy SGU. I like the depth of characterization over the shallow action-plots that get nicely wrapped up at the end of each episode.
I ALMOST never watched SGU, because it was part of the Stargate franchise, which I had dismissed for being poorly written, per my taste. I like the drama and deeper character motivation exploring of seldom confronted feelings. Might be better without "Stargate" in the title, IMO.
Reasons why SGU sucks: Had to wait till season 2 for aliens, BSG-clone, sex(not the insinuated kind), dark,gloomy, little humor, DRAMA, more sex, Eli (actor I like, character's humor I enjoy, but concept of his character pisses me off), religious crap (what if we were meant to be here, god?), little time spent on technology or planets or anything remotely interesting, just more interpersonal drama on board the destiny. --I GET IT-- THE WRONG PEOPLE IN THE WRONG PLACE -- ON THE WRONG CHANNEL --
Why do people like you always have to use outright lies and/or exaggerations to belittle the shows you don't like? The first aliens were introduced in the pilot, there's hardly any sex, and the only time they really showed it was a few seconds in the pilot. The drama is no where NEAR the level of BSG. It's actually closer to B5.
This is a old review before sgu even came out, so he is only reviewing what he thinks about the idea of stargate universe. As sgu is now on it's second season or the second half of the first (or whatever), I'd like to give my review as an update. STARGATE UNIVERSE SUCKS. I'm currently 17 and I watched stargate sg1 as pretty much a child and its g ratedness and intelligence has made me who I am today. It sickens me to see how far stargate has fallen. character limit -- oh well, point made.
While I agree that its saddening that Atlantis was cancelled, I disagree with the claim that Stargate Universe doesn't have a claim to legitimacy. Indeed, it is radically different than SG-1 and Atlantis, both of which maintained a light, comical atmosphere that really made you like the characters, but I don't think that makes it any less good. An analogy that automatically hit me was that SG-1 and Atlantis are like third-person RPGs, whereas Universe kind of has a FPS feel to it.
That said, I think both forms are legitimate, and fans can enjoy both the old shows and the new show, which though maintaining less of the atmosphere, is still a chance to enrich the Stargate universe with interesting characters and storylines, like the nefarious, yet enthralling Dr. Nicholas Rush and the everyman Eli Wallace, who almost uniquely in TV sympathetically portrays a geek-gamer who has real dreams and feelings, rather than being a caricature of what society portrays geeks as.
it may not be for younger viewers, but in my opinion for more mature ones! SGU is to SG1, what TNG was to the classic series of star trek ... its a bit of growing up and moving away from the all-time-comic style people got used to!
i really loved SG1 up until o'neill left, as for SGA, the series never got me hooked, as it was basically the same archetypes of characters with new names and more explosions per minute. SGU now has a chance to put some drama/story into the SG universe finally
im glad they cancelled atlantis. Universe is way better ,better acting, better written , its supposed to be different then the other series it may not be as good as sg-1 but way better than atlantis

Well if your a Farscape fan or watch a Quality show like BSG then you already knew that ALL Stargate is BAD Stargate, there is no good Stargate, it's all crap.

I think that by "younger viewers" they simply mean "new viewers," as in a whole new following of SG that is unfamiliar with the SG universe as it stands. For long-time fans such as you, this comes across as needless, perhaps. But it's really no different than the constant re-set of, say, the 'X-men' comics in order to periodically introduce the universe to viewers / readers who would be lost otherwise.
That being said, it always sucks when a show gets cancelled. Though I'm not surprised at all that SGA got cancelled, as I never perceived it to be as popular or to have as large a following as SG1 [and you know how TV producers are about those blessed viewership numbers]. :/
I don't understand how they expect a younger crowd for SGU... SG-1 was great all 10 seasons... Stargate Atlantis i didn't like at the beginning but then it kind of grew on me... Im 13... But SGU is not on my list to watch for "younger" viewers!

First of all, the acting is much better in SGU than both of the other SG shows.
Second, the special effects are also much, much better.
Third, I think a new direction is great.
SGU is totally awesome.
I have been a loyal fan of SG since it begun. I have never known anyone IRL to share it with, but I still loved it. I, for one, approve of this new direction, and embrace it.
I didn't really watch SGA for the storyline, but SG1 had some awesome things going on with the Ori, which I miss =/.
Well I'm one of the "younger" viewers, I'm 18. I watched all the seasons of sg-1 and the 2 movies that followed it first on hulu and then the movies on DVD. Now that I watched some of the SGU Episodes I'm really disappointed. The actors I liked are gone and the story has disappeared. I really miss a show like SG-1! SGU really has got nothing to do with the other two Stargate Shows (SG-1 and Atlantis) expect the gate on board. I'm really disappointed. I hope the story changes or SG-1 comes back!

I got about maybe seven episodes in then I stopped. It felt like a bad soap opera to me with a few problems. First and foremost: when the water was contaminated. I'm sorry, but i'm pretty sure that if it were SG1 or Atlantis they would've sent in experts using the stones to see what was going on. Especially since, if i remember right, Jack Oneil was one of the people that they mentioned the problem too. But i didn't watch many episodes, so i can't really criticize the whole series... yet.

@LtColPayPay SGU started on Friday. It tanked horribly in the ratings, something which "The Gates" (SG-1 and SGA) never did. SciFi Friday in those days was a force to be reckoned with. The trash that has followed in its footsteps is a shadow of that former glory. Granted, Season 2 improved significantly, but the horrid performance of Season 1 is what caused SyFy to move it around the schedule.

ok so the porblem with this show is that its trying to be be diffrent porblem is it fails because its sticking to the forumla and playing it safe by relying on cliches. and thats not good if this really wants to succeed it needed/needs to get of rid cliches and take risks. i do give it credit for trying to be human but its held back by the porblems i just said and i dont think it can fix them (mostly because of time buddget and censor constraits)

SG-U can work the way it's going. If it wasn't so 'explict' in scenes and toning down the gore factor would help. (On that note of gore, what an old idea to steal! Snakes burying into chests and exploding out of Chloe? Talk about copyright.) Basically if Rush and Young just get it together I think the show will greatly improve.

This is not a Stargate Universe- you don't reviewed the show, you just said what you don't like about the fact it was realesed. Saing you don't like the show just because the older ones wre canceled is not quite responsible. I was a big SG-1 fan and I was even more sad because SGU is getting canceled than the fact Atlantis and SG-1 were, because it is a superior series in my opinion- it had a lot of character development, special effects, a real plot.

SG:A it was great but that last two seasons really showed that the writers were exhausted with SG:A. This also (partly) explains why SG:U strays from away from SG-1 & SG:A. I would've loved to have seen SG:A continue + SG:U, but with $2million per episode being put into SG:U it wasnt possible. I appreciate the effort cause the show, visually, is stunning. The Gateway never looked so good. I grew up with SG and honestly I support SG instead of being bitter and cry about changes.

What should have happened is : Atlantis not get canceled and we still get SGU.... I guess none of us would have been THAT mad on the SG producers then. What really bothers me, SGA was canceled exactly when it really made sense - Atlantis going by Home (Earth)... I had nothing against SG-1 but it was kinda stupid at some points. SG:A was bad. REALLY bad. The episodes were all the same and the plot never seemed to move forward (kinda the same thing with SG-1 but at least it was entertaining)

Well his thoughts would be "I told you so" because it looks as if SGU will be canceled by the end of this season because the so called new audience that the producers went searching for with the new show are abandoning it.
Proof - look at da viewer numbers of the Ssn 1 premiere n the numbers now. started frm 2.2-2.3 mil, now 0.9 mil. This is not because the original fans left the show. Its becoz SGU's new approach was rejected by the new audience, jst like the old fans did.

oh, I also forgot to mention that the lighting sucks. I mean seriously, I understand them wanting to make the show darker, but they seem to have neglected the fact that the audience needs to see what's on the screen.
It's also difficult to watch the shows since someone appearantly keeps bumping into the camera man, and they're keeping the footage! I mean seriously, it's nauseating the camera shakes so much.

I really tried to enjoy SGU. I sat through every episode with gritted teeth while my brain whittled away like candyfloss in a drizzle. Grafted onto the SG franchise like some grotesque third arm, this show begins insulting its views from the outset. I couldn't give a shit who some greasy, depraved fatty gets a hard-on over, like he's supposed to be some personified version of me. sga shouldn't have been canceled and the ending felt too rushed, it should have been two episodes or at least 90 min. The Vegas episode before was awesome though.

As a long time Stargate fan, I just can't get into SGU. The directing is aggravating - Even when two people are simply having a conversation, the camera is shaking around all over the place to add "tension", I suppose.. "Fluff", to try to make the show more contemporary, and it comes off completely hollow. The show is barely about exploration any more, half the time we don't even see the gate. The characters seem to have a lot of trouble getting over pettiness to work together.. It grates on me.

Quit your nerd talk guys... this is the first science fiction show that did not focus a lot on crazy imaginative topic every episode, which half the times, did not end up anywhere near the actual storyline. This show, however, goes thorugh all sorts of desperate human minds and evey actor in this show are doing hell of a job. This show has a solid continuation of story every episode and has great potential for seasons to come.

The story of the Stargate is simply genius. It enables writers to create endless sagas. Personally -- watching your video...you make me retreat further back into hiding. See, I am an attractive, socially active, popular member of society. I can't bring up my love for Sci-Fi to people. When I wear my BSG uniform for Halloween to work at my corporate office, people *freak out*. So now I have to hide it. I have to fit in, blend in. I have a life. I'm a grown up. Fantasy is neat. Reality counts.

@thewewguy8t88 Exactly, they use very good character development. The only stagnant characters are Eli and Chloe. Yeah they have gone through a few things but their characters don't have any real depth. Everyone else is top notch especially Rush....especially Rush! When they showed why he is such an ass and so dejected you really felt sorry for him. Besides...when you die in SGU Your ass is dead and laying in a puddle of blood. There's no fainting with ripped shirts here.

@hiyukenmusic yeah thats porblem the chracters are very hard to relate too. they are just all a bit too perfect at what they do. with no real flaws other then they have sticks up their ass's and agian sure they have character development but who cares when they have well like you said no depeth to them basicly this is something worth trying not within the stargate universe. the idea is interesting like i said just make the characters interesting.

I love debunking foolish asides like that. Still, you can develop characters until the cows come home, but you conveniently ignore the fact that SG-1 and SGA chars had their flaws as well. It just so happened that in either of those shows, they didn't drop all of them on the viewer in 1-2 episodes as they did with SGU. S1=fail.

@fmcc0904 What show isn't going to have writing issues in Season 1. Ticks weren't their biggest flaw. Their biggest flaw was playing around with the "ship is alive" story line that they abandoned about 2 or 3 times. But can you honestly say that if the ratings for Seinfield or the Office in their first season should've dictated whether the network should've committed to a 2nd or 3rd. If that's the case shows would only be written for one season. Beyond that who ends in a cliff hanger!!!!

@hiyukenmusic Yeah, except in the case of Seinfeld, that came from a well-known comedian and the network committed to more than one or two seasons from the get-go. The same can be said for The Office (which I personally detest) because the UK version had run for quite some time and they figured it would pick up a following. SGU got a 2-season deal at the cost of a 6th season of SGA. That was an epic fail right there. SG-1 and SGA boosted each other in rating when they ran concurrently.

You guys are bitching way too much.The premise(ie stargates)is cool.An ancient alien race plants these things all over the universe.Thats cool.But then sg-1 and atlantis comes out,and the whole philosophical and(seriously)thought-inducing expectation gets shattered.It's too comedic,most of the time unintentionally,and boiled down to not being too difficult for any of its viewers to understand-going for lowest common denominator.SG-U is actually more serious, and will hopefully become more clever

The creators pissed off their original fan base for a new audience. Which was really stupid. I don't mind some change, but come on. The character drama really killed this show. They better start embracing true stargate heritage in season 2 or that is it for this spin off. That means more action, adventure, and yes humor!!! Again i don't mind some drama, but keep it to a minimum. I do want this show to succeed. It has the potential.

@dtuj I concur. I feel that the premise is sound. It's similar to Atlantis, a team separated from earth, but also has the potential to be a bit more of a horror show in that they're not really prepared. However, I feel that they made two mistakes: they tried to combine Teen Drama shows with what is basically a military sci-fi show, and those two don't mesh well. The second issue is that they almost immediately provided a connection to Earth, one that I find irritating as a constant plot point.

@Jallorn Yeah I totally agree about the connection to Earth thing. They were supposed to be stranded! In ALL senses. Now, having the stones, each character can experience pretty much everything from Earth. Some enjoyed sex too if memory serves well.

Its great to see a new look in Stargate world and the intense story-line has me coming back for more, don't get me wrong i love Sg-sg1 and Sga but how many different show can you expect them to do where the story structure always remains the same.

to much whining. did anybody ever think after 10 season of SG1 the writer had run out of ideas to keep the show interesting. sometimes trying something new works really well. SGU is different, more dramatic less scifi, not my kind but i watch it. Nothing can compare to SG1 but it run it's course and it was time to close that chapter.

the canceling of SGA was bullshit. no way to talk around it.
still, even though i was damn pissed about what they did to SGA (if you leave out the last 3 episodes of season 5 and imagine the proceed to season 6 instead, there was SO much potential wasted here to bring the wraith story to an end)
i still wont turn down SGU for it. SGU has convinced me for what ive seen (up to episode 16) and i like it! more drama less action, i can live with it!
dont turn down SGU before you watched it.

The last episode "Lost" was the best episode ever for me, they really need to keep taking us to cool planets and getting into the sci-fi stuff, and stay away from the onboard ship drama.

Tried watching the other Stargates, couldn't get into them. Not even the help of Ben Browder and Claudia Black could make me stay long enough to see what was going on. So thus, I tried SGU and find it more pleasing and to me better story telling.

I kinda like the show. I guess I'm just a member of the "target audience".
I admit they're taking their sweet time elaborating on their environment. It took forever for them to get to the "blue aliens" and they still don't know everything about the ship. But what they've presented so far is pretty interesting. The worlds are unique and the overall approach to them is more realistic. I also think characterization does work well, as long as they use it more sparingly in the future.

My opinion is.... I found SG-1 and Atlantis both shallow and cheezy, but I enjoy SGU. I like the depth of characterization over the shallow action-plots that get nicely wrapped up at the end of each episode.
I ALMOST never watched SGU, because it was part of the Stargate franchise, which I had dismissed for being poorly written, per my taste. I like the drama and deeper character motivation exploring of seldom confronted feelings. Might be better without "Stargate" in the title, IMO.

Why do people like you always have to use outright lies and/or exaggerations to belittle the shows you don't like? The first aliens were introduced in the pilot, there's hardly any sex, and the only time they really showed it was a few seconds in the pilot. The drama is no where NEAR the level of BSG. It's actually closer to B5.

This is a old review before sgu even came out, so he is only reviewing what he thinks about the idea of stargate universe. As sgu is now on it's second season or the second half of the first (or whatever), I'd like to give my review as an update. STARGATE UNIVERSE SUCKS. I'm currently 17 and I watched stargate sg1 as pretty much a child and its g ratedness and intelligence has made me who I am today. It sickens me to see how far stargate has fallen. character limit -- oh well, point made.

While I agree that its saddening that Atlantis was cancelled, I disagree with the claim that Stargate Universe doesn't have a claim to legitimacy. Indeed, it is radically different than SG-1 and Atlantis, both of which maintained a light, comical atmosphere that really made you like the characters, but I don't think that makes it any less good. An analogy that automatically hit me was that SG-1 and Atlantis are like third-person RPGs, whereas Universe kind of has a FPS feel to it.

That said, I think both forms are legitimate, and fans can enjoy both the old shows and the new show, which though maintaining less of the atmosphere, is still a chance to enrich the Stargate universe with interesting characters and storylines, like the nefarious, yet enthralling Dr. Nicholas Rush and the everyman Eli Wallace, who almost uniquely in TV sympathetically portrays a geek-gamer who has real dreams and feelings, rather than being a caricature of what society portrays geeks as.

it may not be for younger viewers, but in my opinion for more mature ones! SGU is to SG1, what TNG was to the classic series of star trek ... its a bit of growing up and moving away from the all-time-comic style people got used to!
i really loved SG1 up until o'neill left, as for SGA, the series never got me hooked, as it was basically the same archetypes of characters with new names and more explosions per minute. SGU now has a chance to put some drama/story into the SG universe finally

I think that by "younger viewers" they simply mean "new viewers," as in a whole new following of SG that is unfamiliar with the SG universe as it stands. For long-time fans such as you, this comes across as needless, perhaps. But it's really no different than the constant re-set of, say, the 'X-men' comics in order to periodically introduce the universe to viewers / readers who would be lost otherwise.

First of all, the acting is much better in SGU than both of the other SG shows.
Second, the special effects are also much, much better.
Third, I think a new direction is great.
SGU is totally awesome.
I have been a loyal fan of SG since it begun. I have never known anyone IRL to share it with, but I still loved it. I, for one, approve of this new direction, and embrace it.
I didn't really watch SGA for the storyline, but SG1 had some awesome things going on with the Ori, which I miss =/.

Well I'm one of the "younger" viewers, I'm 18. I watched all the seasons of sg-1 and the 2 movies that followed it first on hulu and then the movies on DVD. Now that I watched some of the SGU Episodes I'm really disappointed. The actors I liked are gone and the story has disappeared. I really miss a show like SG-1! SGU really has got nothing to do with the other two Stargate Shows (SG-1 and Atlantis) expect the gate on board. I'm really disappointed. I hope the story changes or SG-1 comes back!
