big berta it a beuty, not in looks but in sound, allthough i do like the brown/gold colour of it, i will have to make something similar, what method of paper mache did you use, four and water, pva glue, wallpaper paste or any others
@kirtley2010 I used wallpaper paste plus c. 1/6 whiteglue (water based wood glue). Into this mixture I put plaster powder till it is still soft.
1 layer paper, 1 coat with this mixture and 1 layer paper. Dried for c. 3 days, then again 1coat of the paste, 1 layer paper, 1 coat and 1 layer paper. Dry it, next coat and so on.
All in all c. 15 layers of paper and paste. More nearer the neck of the horn. Here the thickness is c. 1 inch.
Well for its size I think the small one comports itself quite well! But like the cliche says "size counts"! When I read the biography of WW II journalist Ernie Pyle, it told how in the early 20's when he was at Indiana U, they had a dance out on the quadrangle. To provide music, they took a phonograph to the science lab on the second story of a nearby building, placed the small end of a large funnel in front of the phonograph and the other at the window! Only in the 20's!
I image that your large horn gramophone could fill up a concert or dance hall with full rich sound. In terms of acoustical reproduction: large horn=better sound? Of course a good pick-up is also needed.
