After the initial opening that resembles very strongly the opening to Rhapsody in Blue, an extremely 90s sitcom style theme plays. So you're both right.
Definitely my favorite cartoon intro. I don't know how to describe it, but I always felt this intro music fit the show 100%. Something about that catchy little clarinet/saxophone diddy just screams 1990's.
@Vondur The theme to the critic is supposed to emulate George Gershwin, who's sound has been used in many forms to represent New York City. Perhaps you could say it screams 1920's and 30's.
Wowzer, this will have been taped off the telly when I was first watching it way back in the 90s. Kudos. FYI, I have The Critic on DVD, i bought it while I was in Canada in 2006.

Great show, great theme song. Haha, his bedroom, bedspread and phone are so '90s. Miss the hell out of that decade.

@Vondur It's perfect. It's a great tribute/rip-off to George Gershwin. Nothing about it that screams 'comedy', I like that.

@Vondur Something almost Woody Allen esque about it.
