In the beginning it was used on a 386-SX16. The board could hold a whopping 4MB of RAM, but came with less than one. The modem was 2400 baud and the OS was DOS 5.0.
I still have the 333MHz P2, running Debian and using this on the command line for fast web browsing on a laptop that is reaching the end of its days.
Now it is used on a Phenom II with 8GB or RAM running BT5 on 7 meg DSL.
Yes, I know that's a slow connection today, but it's the fastest that runs to my house.
Interesting. So the ergodata greek character set is automatically applied by just running the program. Try caldera web browser. It is a graphical one, the best made for dos for my oppinion, better than the arachne.
@MarioALuigiFan Μπορείς να κατεβάσεις την έκδοση για DOS του Lynx καθώς και packet drivers για την κάρτα δικτύου από τις διευθύνσεις που υπάρχουν στο video description.
A 486 DX2 66 with 16 megs of RAM was a MONSTER. Spared us from upgrading to a Pentium for a LONG time. (and then there was an 'OverDrive' chip).
A 16 meg 486 was like a system now shipping with 16 GIGs of RAM. Just doesn't happen. Most systems back then shipped with 2..maybe 4 megs. I loved our 486 with 16 megs of RAM!
Well I got DOSLYNX .39b working. It is pretty much the same thing except you have easier navigation. My earlier mistake was trying to use the packet driver from the DOS windows shell. I should have known that the windows 3.11 networking had to be turned off, shelled out or run before even loading windows. I can send email with it too. Works great with a ramdrive and protected mode.
I have a 686 running 3.11 and I have been trying to get my head around the .bat files I have to configure for dos386 Lynx. It's a bit confusing. I managed to get the packet drivers working, but I'm getting dos enviroment errors.
If you succeed in setting up Lynx, you are a man my son.
lol its neat but i think the browser can't really be used for anything more than just links and text on pages no images or anything like that but it would be neat

I've done this, and not just for a fun exercise. I actually used Lynx as my web browser from time to time on my 60 MHz Pentium!

@alcalinebattery1
exactly...
if you want the ultimate dos experience, go buy a cheap old PC someplace. 386 or 486 does just fine.

Ahh, DOS. Bet I can still cut a tightly-tuned autoexec and config.sys from memory... did it so many times...

If we still ran that system of internet, we could have been spared some of the morons that infest the 'net now. Yes, i'm talking to you.

Okay. I'm in the Lynx cabal now. Got 2.8.5 rel 1 working on my old machine with broadband. Is it cool? It is.
