Most likely the Diesels were there for HEP and support. The coach was a modern coach that required AC to run the heat and air conditioning. Thomas does not have that capability. Also, you don't really want to get stranded out there should something happen....

Yes, this is a live steam locomotive. It was a Porter 0-6-0 tank. It hauls 12 cars without hardly breaking a sweat.
