I'm not sure this falls within the realm of classroom management but the puzzle activity would be very fun as a team building exercise for a new class.

Thanks for posting this. I have to admit, I don't think this activity was really encouraging the students to work together - they are all sitting at desks facing the front, and the teacher was controlling who comes out to the front and puts their piece up. Working together is where the teacher facilitates, but lets the students work things out together (with very little teacher input). Good idea for an activity though!
