It was. I was in class 10th grade English in Arlington VA. All of a sudden the PA came on and the mike was next to the TV in the Principal's office. Historically an "assassin" is one who attempts to murder, by surprise, a political leader. It is a name derived from members of an anti-Christian Muslim sect whose members killed crusaders.

The term does not necessarily mean the assassin was successful in killing the intended target -- although that's how most public-school educated Americans would understand it today.
