everybody needs to stop acting like idiots and realize that they knew there was going to be radiation! I mean, its pretty fucking obvious there is going to be radiation when a nuclear reactor explodes but 8 hours or so after an accident like this they're not going to know how much radiation there is! god some people are just stupid
@Xr3meGaming This was an earlier time, and they don't have as well a knowledge of nuclear sciences as they do. Head scientists lied to power plant staffing about the dangers, claiming these reactors were flawless. The only clue the staffing had was that Radiation was bad. Nothing else. Others knew even less than that.
All of these men are heros...I have been reading some accounts of family members and friends of some of the men who bravely, and selflessly sacrificed their own lives to protect the rest of Russia, Ukrane, and all of Europe...there was a guy who dove into a pool of radioactive water to open a drain...I think it took him 3 or 4 tries to find the drain plug, and he KNEW he would die, but bravely did it anyway. We need more people like them. God bless the heros of Chernobyl, may they rest in peace.
I don't know much Russian, but from what i could understand and see from the video and from what I already know, the pilots were dropping graphite into the open reactor. They were burying it in graphite, as far as I know.
@olvanish You're a moron everybody knew, we are not idiots you know? Everyone knows basic chemistry and what happens when a reactor fails.... or is it different in america?
It is a mixture of sand, barium and lead. It was thought this would smother the graphite fire that was burning out of control and spreading radioactive fallout into the air. However, it didn't work like they thought it would and instead sent clouds of radioactive dust into the air with each drop.
i remember that every day then i was wery young my mother whashed my head in something, and put something like a bag on the head and said it mustnt be taken off ,for a hour. It was protection from radioactive rain
well said, and very true like the romans, they created great things and people liked them for it even though they had bad points, most likely like us but still very true
FORZION, here is a tip, look up "Three Mile Island Accident", you will find that the USA also has badly designed reactors, built to a poor standard, and had staff that were not fully aware of the operating characteristics of the reactor! Three Mile Island was pretty close to being Chernobyl had they not been lucky and realised what was going on, as at first their was confusion all around!
comparing Chernobyl to TMI is comparing apples and oranges, bud. TMI= Water moderated, containment domed. Chernobyl= Graphite moderated design with inherent, dangerous flaws without a structure designed to withstand the blast.
Indeed. Three Mile Island, if anything, is an example of effective design allowing for containment of disaster. The people in the surrounding areas still get to live in their cities and towns.
0:21 - Are those the actual materials from inside the reactor?!

It's too bad that Russian government "forgot" to tell these pilots that they were all going to fucken die from radiation they were exposed to

its not sand its neutron absorbers which did no good due to the fact that none of the neutron absorbers dident even hit the reactor.

i dont speak russian...whats that stuff they're dropping?

They're dropping sand to prevent the radiation spreading more than it already did
