just saw this and you did a wonderful job, i have to say that that looks like one of the best engine jobs i have seen. did the engine hook-up straight, to the standard 5 speed from the 300tdi defender?. and what problems did you have doing this.
Australian Land Rovers were fitted with the Isuzu 4BD1 as a standard option from 1980 to 1990, so it's easy to fit one, although some of the parts required can be expensive and some hard to find. The only modification required on the car itself was the engine mounts as it used to be a V8. The standard gearboxes with the Isuzu engine were the Lt95 4 speed and the Lt85 5 speed. I'm running the 4 speed as it's the stronger box. You can use a R380 from a Defender, but it requires mods.
It's a 4BD1Turbo from a 1988 NPR59 Isuzu 7 tonne truck, so yes, they certainly are a big 4 cylinder.
Factory figures are 83KW (111HP) and an awsome 324NM of torque. They are not a high revving engine, but the peak torque is between 1400~1800RPM so they pull very well. I have also fitted an intercooler, fueled it up a little and boost at 15psi (Factory boost ~13psi) I could get a lot more out of it, but I need it to be super reliable for the remote travelling we do.
Just started conversion to fit the 4bdt1 to old landrover 110. What gearbox are you using with yours. I have a Lt77 which i am aware is made of soft cheese but also have a R380 with V8 bellhousing. do you know where a conversion kit would be avaliable from? what clutch are you using?

@in10ns, Yes, I did the conversion. As the 4BD1 was standard in some Land Rovers in Australia all the adapters etc are available as parts. Unless the 4JB1 has the same rear end as a 4BD1, I think you'll find it hard to find any sort of kit. Cheers
What should I do with the gasoline injection pump - should it stay and be used as the lift pump for diesel fuel or just be removed (in case diesel injection pump makes enough suction)?
The exhaust actuator is controlled with a hose from the side of the compressor outlet, you can see the red hose in the left hand side view of the engine.
My ultimate plan is to fit a variable nozzle turbo which I believe would suit this engine really well.
eh it woulde be better to do a chevy 350 engine and transmission conversion. would require lots of mods but done yourself by affordable. it would take a while. isuzu disco sounds well interesting
Just needed some information please. i have the same car and was planning to put a toyota qd32 engine into the car, is this isuzu conversion easy to do?

@malveja , No, It's a 4BD1Turbo from a 1988 NPR59 Isuzu 7 tonne truck, but it's basically the same engine as fitted to the Australian 110 from '83 to'90.
@rijidijau thanks. i have 83 110 rhd that i want to start modding including the engine. i read that this engine is great for the lt95. mine has the orig. 4 cyl petrol engine with tranny. i am just wondering if mine has the lt95? any suggestions as to how i can verify it and proceed with searching for the engine? thanks

Looks pretty nice, job well done, Makes me very envious with that turbo design on the Isuzu. I have had thoughts about swapping my TD5 engine for an Isuzu, but I'll be content for now. Out of curiosity, any idea what the maximum capacity a 3.9L Isuzu can pull at all? It definitely more than 3.5 -4 tons by far.
Standard figures are 315 nm @ 1800 rpm, max rpm 3600, but this one is intercooled so would have more torque. It's in a County, so has the stronger Lt95 gearbox, not the R380.
Lt95 is the same 4 speed box as in Range Rovers. Also 110's from 1983 to 1986. In Australia the 110 was available with V8 or 3.9 litre Isuzu diesel (turbo version used by the Army) The Lt95 is the strongest box LR ever made for these models and the only box that can really handle the torque of the Isuzu. 315nm is 232lb/ft
to who ever done the conversion, you done a bloody nice job,im a rangie freek,in need of a diesel lump,i work on these engines now and again, brilliant lump, well done mate, good to see people doing things properly.

That's a beautiful rig you have there.

What was the factory HP rating of this engine? Thats one big 4-cylinder. I can only imagine the low speed torque it puts out.

Hi,
Very neat job. did you do the conversion? I am currently trying to fit a isuzu 4jB1T on a LT95. any leads on a kit being sold?

Dear Rijidijau,
Sorry to bother you with so many questions:
What should I do with the gasoline injection pump - should it stay and be used as the lift pump for diesel fuel or just be removed (in case diesel injection pump makes enough suction)?
Thank you

Hi,
Congratulations - it's a decent looking conversion!
I'm working on similar one now. I wonder what is controlling your Exhaust actuator (turbo boost controller) ?
Thank you in advance,
Roman

To put on that engine, and that LR gear box (lt95m i assume), whas there any other need of transformations?

The turbo engine came out of a 7 ton truck, so that will give you an idea of it's pulling power.

Butiful.
Bet its max rpm r a little lower than tdi200?
changed gearing aswell?
What about torque?
This must have more that 380nm? (max for r380).

Isnt the lt95 the older one used in range rovers? cant quite remember, if its not which one am I thinking of?
lt95 has reverse down and left forward?...shit I forgot!
I am under impression that the r380 is the strongest, is your reverse in same place as L reg discovery?
Cool conversion anyway!
Jap engines etc r really good.
with 315 sounds like u will be ok.
Whats that in lb/ft?
