  • I wish I could hear what the lady is saying while she is cooking.

  • had to bring up the slave subject...lol

  • @shariotoflove

Do you find something off putting about that?

  • @Rivrlivr probably not the best avenue to voice it, but i suppose its still history that shouldnt be forgotten.

  • @shariotoflove the African American experience in the Northeast is very nuanced.

The VanCortlandt's property was staffed by enslaved blacks and probably some indentured white workers as well. There is a perception that the "slaves" of the time were monolithically uneducated, unskilled laborers. The reality is that many of these "slaves" held a variety of positions that even involved independent navigation of commercial ships owned by the family. This should not be forgotten!

  • @Rivrlivr only nuanced if youre a white, right-wing, in-the-closet racist! the fact is that the slave issue was and still is a big thing for Black people, which is why people like Lavada still bring it up. So, I wont for a second believe it was because they were treated with integrity, respect and equality. they had their own businesses because they did it for themselves, however they were only 'allowed' to do that after a long time of persecution, slavery, denied education, rape and blood.
