@SemmeCat Yes you can, in fact, ComicWorks comes with it's own tones library. The application is similar, you choose an area to tone, select the tone you want to apply, rotate/scale and then apply; the only thing I don't like is that CW selection tools aren't that friendly (just square or magic wand. No freehand/polygon). You can also "paint" simple tone patterns by freehand. Maybe I should make a quick video explaining how it works in CW.
@O0ohMar Yes you can! Just be sure to scan your drawings at the best resolution possible, usually 300dpi is okay, but if you can manage to scan at 600 dpi that would be great. This is for inking of course. For coloring 300dpi is enough.
Damnnnnnnn I want a boyfriend like him! XD I'm new when it comes to digital art, and I'm trying all programs aviable to see which one I'm more comfortable with. I might give this one a shot, seeing how simple and neat it looks. >v<b
is it the same as the Manga Studio? What version did you use on that video? Also I tried the Manga Studio and did a not so good job. My lines are kinda wobbly. I used the compensation / auto correct and set it to 5. Any tutorials or tips for newbies? Thanks
@beardrooler Nope, ComicWorks is a different kind of program than Manga Studio, it is simpler actually and I like it better. Wobbly lines are usually because you still need to get used to the pen tablet (my lines were also pretty bad at first), so the only advice I got for you is to keep practicing, retrace the lines as many times as possible and never give up ;)
@LaraYokoshima but wobby lines aren´t just because of the artist. For me, it was because my older GT wasn´t that good, I allways got told, it´s because of the artist and you need to practice, but thats half the truth. After 5 years I buyed a new one and TADAA, there aren´t wobby lines anymore, the lines look the same as if I draw on paper, and not with GT.
@neoridgeback Comicworks does have an auto correct feature for the brush, which I use when I do long strokes, but it is unchecked at first. Manga Studio actually comes with the autocorrect function by default, so you should experience softer lines instantly :)
@deniseg007 I did publish a few chapters of a yaoi manga of my own, called "Master!" in the long gone Rush magazine. I do hope I can continue it sometime.
Wow, you must have a really steady hand or ComicWorks helps you draw neater lines in lineart. I've seen someone draw lineart that neat in Corel Painter 11. But I'm wondering if the program helps or is that just your steady hands? Also Pendulum fuck yeah!
MY GOD. HOW DO YOU INK LIKE THAT? No wait wrong question. How do you draw so NEATLYYYY. All the clean lines and stuff. DDDDD: LOLOL. -shot- ;u; You are amazing ! <3
@ryovan To be honest, I wouldn't know since I haven't even tested a Cintiq... but I am pretty sure the experience of drawing digitally is so much better and precise with a Cintiq! Either way, if you can afford one, then go for it. I'll stick with the Intuos for the mean time :)
@Teru981 Oh, this was bought by my former publisher and given to us artists a long time ago... so I really dunno where to physically find it. Try the Deleter website, they sell this version I think, but you'll have to buy it online. Thanks for the comment!
@XDamienHaloX Don't worry, it looks that way because CW uses 1 bit black to "ink". The edges may look jagged and overall shitty at full size, but when printed it will give you very clean blacks. My video is reduced from its original size, that's why the inks look soft, but at 100% the lines look as you described.
Any dot pattern tone can be use for shading. And no, I don't think I'll do a step-by-step on how to draw a character. What I can suggest is that you practice your anatomy and draw Dante a lot :P
No... as far as I know, Photoshop's early versions can't rotate the canvas, but the newer ones like CS4 have some sort of tool to do that but it uses openGL and a powerful graphic card. I haven't been able to use it cuz my computer is not that cool :(
I really don't think there are any rules for any hybrids' looks, since you can basically create whatever you like.
I do draw all my work now digitally with the tablet. I haven't tried comicworks for coloring (altho it allows color layers), since I think CW couldn't possibly achieve the color effects that other programs offer, like Photoshop or Painter. CW could give a more sketchy kind of color I think, not really pro.
Do you use shortcut keys to turn your page? I know I can turn the page but have the hardest time to get it right side up again perfectly. How do you do it so easily? :D
Yes, when you press and hold the ALT key and drag, you can rotate the canvas. To reset the canvas to it's normal view, just press ALT key once. It should return to normal.
ComicWorks is a program developed by Deleter that allows you to draw, ink and screentone too with easy to use tools and other basic options. It's very friendly with your computer too, doesn't use so much RAM so it never lags.
You can import a previously drawn picture to CW and ink later, or you can draw everything there digitally from scratch.
Awesome vid. I've never been into manga but lately I've been more interested in it. The time and creativity that goes into it is worth appreciating. ^^
I think you were asking if I drew it with a pen tablet. Yes, I do use a Wacom Intuos3 as specified in the video description.
Your first question can be answered in the description and even the video title. I did have some classes at the university for adobe software, since I majored in graphic design, and have been using them for a decade now. And I guess everyone can do this if they have the skills, will and time to practice (in that order).
hey-- i'm sure you get a lot of comments, but i was wondering if you could help me out a bit.
i've been trying to color my own lineart (I only have corel painter 4) but every time i send my pictures from manga studio, it won't let me make the lineart it's own layer, and therefore it paints over all the black lines...
Wish I could help, but I don't use Manga Studio, nor will in the future. Still, the program must have an export function. Export your drawing in layers as PSD or PNG with transparent background. You might also consider upgrading Painter to 7 or 8.
How on earth do you make the lines so smooth???!!!!, im trying EVERYTHING ! my line is so shitty when i do it with my tablet is there a special tool to help me? or brush? god please help me i need help inking my drawings when i scan them
Actually the only thing that will make your lines smoother is practice. My lines were also crappy at the beginning. ComicWorks tho has a special feature for the pen that "optimizes" the strokes, correcting them just a bit.
What dpi are you scanning your drawings into your computer at? If you're taking a drawing into a program and the resolution's off, it's because you resized it either when you scanned it in, or while you were in the program. I can't see why else you would have trouble with size. Is it too big or too small? What programs are you using?
the scanner I use isn't that good. I can't resize or anything with it, or it does that automaticly...
I mostly just try to open the sketch with comic works after I scanned it, but it never has the right size. Letting it the size it already is gives a really small picture at 25%, the amount of percent that gives the smooth looks. When I resize it, it still doesn't look like a good sketch, but if I import a way smaller picture, and resize it, it looks just as awesome...I don't understand...
I really don't understand what you were trying to do, but you don't need your scanner to resize anything. If you scan the drawing at 300dpi in grayscale and keep the real size, when importing the drawing to ComicWorks you should choose the same resolution, not higher, or else the output size will be smaller. If your image is 72dpi, you should specify that in CW as "original resolution" and choose at least 300dpi for "created resolution". That way, the final dpi will be 300 no matter what.
how did u came up with such a cool looking guy? I mean... i even don`t have creativity to imagine my original character...and to not talk about DRAWING him ... :D btw... awesomee job 100/10 i watching this video over and over again... i don`t know why...but there is something cool about this character :D it`s kinda look like he could be in Bleach anime :D
isn't it better to ink on paper than on pc? i think on paper the quality line r more controllable n done faster. Or it is a must requirement skill in te line of publish?
It depends on the artist. I prefer digital inking, since it's cleaner and faster for me (since I don't have to scan, clean and level). Most mangaka prefer to ink traditionally and use digital screentoning, but there are still the ones that do all traditional.
Wow, thank you so much for showing me the program. I bought "Manga Studio 3.0" and it's the biggest load of crap I have ever tampered with. Then I saw this program, but I was too paranoid to pick it up.
which do you think is better ComicWorks or Manga Studio? or if you know about anything else cause i don't. And this is asking a lot but i hope in the future you make a videos in real time, waking us through your work(I really need that for screentune, i seen your screentune video but idk it would really help me and others out)
Real time? If you want me to show something specific, I can do it in another vid. These videos just show the process I follow to complete an image, that's why I speed them up.
I prefer CW more since it's a simpler program with simple functions; just what you need to ink. Manga Studio has too many stuff and windows everywhere that just make me dizzy. But the pen behavior of MS it's slightly better for people with trembling hands, since it corrects your lines everytime you trace them.
@LaraYokoshima
Can i apply tones on comicwork like you do in your other video with adobe photoshop?

What dpi are you scanning your drawings into your computer at? If you're taking a drawing into a program and the resolution's off, it's because you resized it either when you scanned it in, or while you were in the program. I mostly just try to open the sketch with comic works after I scanned it, but it never has the right size. When I resize it, it still doesn't look like a good sketch, but if I import a way smaller picture, and resize it, it looks just as awesome...I don't understand...
toslverr 2 years ago
I really don't understand what you were trying to do, but you don't need your scanner to resize anything. If you scan the drawing at 300dpi in grayscale and keep the real size, when importing the drawing to ComicWorks you should choose the same resolution, not higher, or else the output size will be smaller. If your image is 72dpi, you should specify that in CW as "original resolution" and choose at least 300dpi for "created resolution". That way, the final dpi will be 300 no matter what.

Wow, thank you so much for showing me the program. I bought "Manga Studio 3.0" and it's the biggest load of crap I have ever tampered with. Then I saw this program, but I was too paranoid to pick it up.

How did you do the screen capture?
Thanks,
Bobby ^_^

which do you think is better ComicWorks or Manga Studio? or if you know about anything else cause i don't. And this is asking a lot but i hope in the future you make a videos in real time, waking us through your work(I really need that for screentune, i seen your screentune video but idk it would really help me and others out)
icesamurai8 3 years ago

Well thanks for the reply, every in sight full

AWSOME!!
The ComicWorks I think it's great for tons! I prefer the Manga Studio for inking .... but you are the Master in ComicWorks XD.
Really, excellent work!
