The vote in the European Parliament was on an amendment which would insert text into the document stating that the Irish referendum would be respected. MEPs voted against it, due to it being absolutely pointless. The Lisbon Treaty requires unanimous ratification in all EU member states, so if the Irish reject it, the treaty is shelved anyway
