Almost everyone could have slaves, so there's quite no reason why they all should be unkind. Especially when the slave is there to take care of your house, he becomes like, part of family (like a dog at least XD), that's quite different than slaves working for the kingdom.

That said, sure slavery sucks, but hey, people of these times saw that as a normal thing

But I do know of a book series that goes very much into all the unknown details of the bible stories - it's called The Torah Anthology. There's 45 books in the series, the books categorized by Torah readings. I have two of, and I've learned LOTS of interesting things from them, especially stuff about the plagues. I don't have the one that talks about this story but it's the type of book that might mention it.
