  • i remember listening to this when i was 13, sitting in my room, looking out on gray skies out my window, in the tar-bitten mix of asphalt and pine trees of my hometown in new jersey. i had no idea what the story behind this song was, but i felt the pathos so deeply. im 22 now, in college studying saxophone, music and sound, and this song is still so heavy in my mind. thank you so much mr. coltrane, in your spirit, i will also try to define my experience through my saxophone. you reached me.

  • What year was this, '67? Where can I buy the full program dvd, if it is available? Thanks.

  • Magnificent! Chills and goosebumps!

  • saxybair13

  • Great description.

  • listen to Tyner,magnificent!

  • one word, beautiful. Coltrane is the man, no question. Tune brings tears to my eyes. As it commemorates a sad event in our history.Simply one of the best jazz recordings ever made

  • @fantomofFear

Race Music by Dr. Guthrie Ramsey would be a great place to start. excellent book about race and jazz and their effects on each other

  • anyone know any coltrane albums where this has been recorded?

  • Something similar to this song?

  • Simply magnificent....

  • This inspired me to write my research about "taking a stand" about jazz and racism. I would love to write about this song but need a book or some solid research, not just the info from this video, does anyone know of any?

I'm also going to write about Strange Fruit, any other ideas?

  • REAL JAZZ ! Music with a conscience

  • This song has nothing to do with jazz, nothing to do with a saxophone, drums or bass, not the piano nor the joy of making music. This song is a prayer and a warning for four little girls killed by hate while attending church. What did we learn?

  • Wow!

  • Elvin Jones's crescendo at the end of this piece was awesome

  • This was only three weeks after that shameful bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, right?

  • Probably the best view of a jazz drummer in action i've ever seen .

  • thanks for the interesting info..

  • John Coltrane is jazz no doubt about it.

    I do enjoy thios peace...

  • Haunting....absolutely beautiful music! happy this footage is still around for us to see & hear & enjoy. Thank you!

  • Gives me goosebumps every time, without fail. One of the most incredible pieces ever written, that still has that totally free element.

  • Have a deep admiration for John Coltrane's work. A very inspiring man and this track is beautiful. Thank you for posting the video here, and have got a lot out of reading the comments posted here.

  • takes me to a whole nother realm...

  • This song moves me! Thanks to Public Enemy I found this great Man!!! Public Enemy song Don't Believe the Hype "Writers treat me like Coltrane, insane

Yes to them, but to me I'm a different kind

We're brothers of the same mind, unblind "

  • i shed tears to this song

  • i remember sitting at the kids table at grandpa's house, my father shouting, hurt, ranting about a church in Alabama. What would we do without music, and this creative genius?

  • a testament to Trane's genius, Peace to everyone from Russia.

  • This video is incredibly moving. And thank you for writing all that you did in the info section. Very interesting to read some history and peoples views.

    Thanks!

  • His inspiration for this was a civil rights speech by Martin Luther King Jr.

  • 'trane was someone whose life made the earth a better place because of it. Thank you for posting.

  • Now here is thread of thought/comment i suspect - i can fit right into. How about the intensity on this one? Was that McCoy on Piano?

  • Yep, that's McCoy Tyner

  • Marvelous ~ as is usual from Coltrane!

But how is it that this video has only 2,000 views, and someone else's stupid pet trick has 1,500,000 views??

  • @LDixon007 Watch Tim Minchin's "youtube lament."

  • @hymnofashes - nice & cute (it's at: v=h3cS--IkerE) but still not as cute as kittens waking up. :-)

Well, this Coltrane video is up to 31,000 - so that's a bit of an improvement.

  • @LDixon007 people are morons, thats why...

  • @LDixon007 there´s a simple answer: special things to special people. This is sublime, how many people do you know can relate to that feeling or state? Few, i´m sure.

  • *speechless*

  • Thank You GOD...
