I totally loved the movie from the first time I saw it to the present day. I just don't understand the criticism that it's slow, but then I find more modern films too fast. I felt that at last we had a star trek episode filmed with proper effects and at the proper length and an absolutely perfect soundtrack.
personally I don't care too much for this film. however that does not apply to the entire film. there are some great elements, and even more, the key elements that would set the stage for all Star Trek to come. I belive this movie had a good story concept but it was poorly executed. the theme is what set the standards and aspirations of mostly all sci fi to follow. but for lack of dialogue, character interaction/development, and a 48 hour docking sequence, I found it impossible to sit through.
I'm part of the lot of people who like this film wholeheartedly. The music, the cast, the story-everything. This movie endeared the crew of the Enterprise to me on the big screen! Saw it at the theater in my hometown all those years ago as a young man 12 years old. Strange. I usually don't like the ending of a movie, but with this one, I felt quite complete.
I always love the rainbow/spectrum in the original poster. It's a shame gays took it as their symbol. I'm not bashin' them. It's just not the same anymore. I see this and the Gil Girard original costume with the spectrum armband and I love it. Shame it's a political/social movement statement now.
When i watched this movie the first time i couldnt have picked a better time it was friday at midnight , all dark quiet, i wil never forget that moment best way to watch this movie. (or any movie)
@darkram13 think this film went over a lot people heads, the premise is actually very intelligent and for me, its still the best star trek film ever made.
@darkram13 i agree. a lot of people dislike this flick, but personally i think it has a very epic story line, the effects are excellent, and Goldsmiths score is truly magnificent.
haunting, sublime piece of music...truly one of the finest jerry Goldsmith scores. say, can anyone hear The Voyager series theme echoing in its refrain...? Its there!
@pachanish Voyager? Um, nope. Please don't associate that garbage series with the awesomeness that was TOS. There's a special place set aside in Gre'thor for you.
Most cerebral of all the Star Trek films. Very much in the true spirit of science fiction. I think it's a great film.

Magical and romantic
cinemas have lost a lot of atmosphere in the last decade
the overture would be one way to get it back
wonderful upload alucard

I don't care if you hate the first movie (I like it a lot), but how can anyone hate the MUSIC?
This is a great score!

I had to rewatch it a few years ago via the Directors Edition, and now enjoy the film a lot more in this incarnation.
The music is excellent, and is IMO the main reason this film is so well remembered.

Yeah I just had myself an 11-movie "Star Trek" marathon.
I definitely enjoyed the 1st movie a lot more than ever before, probably because this music was so consistently in touch with the story.
