  • hey could you tell me the name of the scart cable you bought also is it compatible if i set up a sega cd 32x. what i mean is can it fit the 32x video out, also can it fit any other sega consoles like the saturn or dream cast if you could get back to me i would be greatly appreciative.

  • Lmfao! Fuck it, man... i went out and bought a 32inch Flat CRT off craigslist for $25.

Scanlines are better anyhow...which you had already mentioned!

Bless Phonedork! Extracting that 480 signal from the Genesis is a beautiful thing!

  • @AKNOREDDOT Hell Yea!!!!!! A 32 Inch for 25 dollars????!!!!! Thats fawking great! I am going on Craigs List. I am working out of town and playing on a small CRT

  • Ok fuck all that, my shit came in today and didnt fucking work. I tried all 3 LCDs in ny crib even the LED. The only tv that flavoured a signal was the old ass Olevia bankrupt LCD tv, however it only displayed 1/4 of the screen and the rest was fuzz!

SOO is it the converter or the TVs!?

  • @AKNOREDDOT I dont know be honest. It could be the scart cable, the video transcoder (CSY 2100 or what ever device you used), or if your TV is set at 120HZ. If so set your TV to 60 HZ and make sure you are not using wide screen. Use full screen.

  • YOURE SAYING I JUST NEED THE CYP IF I HAVE A MODEL 1. CORRECT?

  • @AKNOREDDOT Yes, since you have a model 1 Genesis you have a external stereo port in front of the system. So get you a CSY 2100 and a sega genesis scart cable and convert the RGB on your television and uses the stereo port on your model 1 for sound. There is also a CVS2087 which is another RGB to component video transcoder like the CSY 2100. I got one for 49.99 dollars on Ebay. It works great on my NeoGeo, but looks a little distorted on the corners of a flat screen LCD, it may be my scart cable

  • Thanks a ton for the video i cant believe how good my genesis and sfc look now.

  • i found your videos about a year ago, i had been debating weather or not to spend 100 bucks on my genesis for an s video mod at the time. fast forward to today, i have a scart converter and scart cables for all my systems!!111 thanks phonedork, legendary vids

  • @spshortman No problem man!!!

  • You mad, mohawked, mother fucker! That's amazing!

  • I'm trying to understand correctly how to get the rgb component because I think I'm gonna go out and try what you've done. Sorry if the answer is obvious, but for a Model 1 Sega Genesis would I need just the Sega Genesis 1 STEREO RGB SCART cable, the Cyi 2100, and then an rgb cable with two male ends (and then an r/w cable hooked into the headphones jack that I have.)?

  • @phonedork Also, be careful in buying those SCART switch boxes, because a lot of them a poor and degrade the picture quality. ;/

  • @phonedork You can get RGB SCART cables that have additional stereo RCA cables. Playstation ones were really popular. ;/

  • Also, have you tested this out with a 32x? I assume you'd need a 9-pin Model 2 Genesis/32x to SCART cable instead, and everything else in the setup the same right? I can see a difference using the 32x as opposed to just the Genesis (using AV for both). It's sharper. But I wonder if the 32x would add any benefit if having a component setup.

  • @JunmaiShu Check out my other videos on this. I show that this does work with the 32X. Hope that helps! Take care :-)

  • I've heard that with older system like the Genesis the picture looks better on a CRT TV. Is this true? And if so, would this setup makes as much of a difference on a CRT? Or perhaps even hurt it? I have a 27" flat screen CRT with component input and was thinking about doing this.

Your videos are very informative. Thanks.

  • Wait, aren't the scart cables required to plug into your sega 32x? Will I not be able to play off my 32x with this setup? Or how could I get it all to work. Assuming I am using either model 1 or CDX.

  • @Bloodthr0e Please check out my 4th video where I show you how to set up the 32X for this! It can be done! Works fantastic!

  • Have you tried any 5 way SCART splitters? I know with Svideo splitters there was a big difference in powered/non powered and cheap brands as far as video degradation.

I am still looking to convert as many consoles as possible over to SCART. I wanted to start with the Gen/SNES/Saturn/Neo-Geo/PSX. I still can't find anything for the N64 that does real RGB over SCART though.. Any info on that?

  • This is kind of off topic so I apologize in advance; would I be possible to connect a Sega Saturn to a CRT monitor via VGA? Maybe it's just me, but I can't find any info on how to accomplish this, would it be as easy as buying an adapter for the A/V cables?

  • @nu0two There are scart to VGA adapters that work quite well and have a much superior picture then AV or S-video, if that is what you are looking for. Sega Saturn has scart cables that can be found at PLAY ASIA

  • @phonedork Yeah that's exactly what I'm looking for, do I just plug the scart into the VGA adapter and I'm good to go? My CRT monitor only has a male output so I guess I'd need a female VGA adapter? Thanks for the response!

  • thank you SO MUCH, phonedork, for informing me of the best way to hook up sega genesis, super nintendo, sega saturn, sega dreamcast (for those non-vga-cable games), sega master system, and anything else pre-HD to a new HD TV set. as long as one can get a SCART RGB cable, then this method is golden. i could not find a CSY 2100, but i found a CVS2087 on eBay. it looks the same and works the same. i have tested sega genesis, SNES, sega saturn, and dreamcast on my sharp aquos HD TV. glorious!

  • @harrisagnar after much testing, i'm not sure anymore whether this is the best solution to the problem for me. the colors are off on my Sharp Aquos (may be different on other brands of HD; i don't have anything else on which to test). i find myself liking the brighter and truer colors of s-video, although the resolution is not as good. i try to adjust the color, brightness, hue, tint, and contrast to make the picture better, but i can only do so much on my Sharp Aquos.

  • kudos on doing the cdx segment in true fmv sega cd style!

  • so you just connect the audio cables to the scart switch then the stereo system, and the sound well come out?

  • So is RGB really that much better than even S-video? Cause S-video is really quite good...RF and Composite obviously suck, though.

  • @zedrein18 Its way better then s-video. Look at part two where I compare them.

  • Can't you just solder on RCA connectors onto the rgb connenctions on the DIN jack? If not, what might happen?

  • why am i viewing this on a sega cd?

  • I must be retarted what cable goes from your Genesis to your t.v.?

  • I really enjoy your videos, can I ask what model your tv is? Beware of som Vizio's, mine won't output RGB from the converter through this.

  • @clockwize Thanks! I hope it helps out. As far as RGB, American TVs never support them. We have component which just so happens to be similar to RGB. This adapter allows the RGB to be transcoded to use on American sets. Typically if you do have component it should work. I even tried on older sets. My flatscreen was a Samsung, I used a shitty CRT I got from Target and it worked, then I bought a bad ass High Def Sony CRT from Craig's List that worked as well. So I tried it on 3 different sets.

  • @phonedork

Yeah don't know what the deal is my sega is a model 1, using the scart cable with extra audio plug.

I tried an HDMI converter first and the picture was there just wasn't great..

Tried both component jacks on this Vizio with my rgb converter and it looks like the easter bunny shit on my screen. Its just braids of pastel colors cant even see the game.

Beginning to think it's the tv thats why Im asking which one you had, not sure if this Vizio can output 240p or what..

  • If you live in North America, you're also going to need a AC to DC convertor.

  • Will this work on my CRT TV if it has component input, or will this only work on a flat screen TV?

  • @ioport Yes, actually it looks better on a CRT.

  • Thanks! That's awesome news. Now if I could just find the CSY-2100. Don't see any on eBay and the ones sold by various vendors on the Internet cost $100+

  • @phonedork so rgb is just like component?

    i hate rf

    i don't like composite

    s-video is alright

i live in north american and your pretty much telling me i can't get rgb display without getting a csy 2100? is there a cheaper converter where i can plug my component cables on one side and rgb cable thats for my sega genesis M.1 on the other side? ALL THESE STEPS R DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

  • Good Video! Does this work with 32X??

  • Yes it does!

  • Hell yes, I'm so sick of my JVC X-Eye looking like ass on my hdtv. When I get my tax return I'm running this setup.

  • You got a existing stereo port on the JVC X-Eye dont you? If thats true you are all good without a splitter.

  • Dreamcast outputs an HDTV compatible 480p RGBHV (VGA) signal if you use one of those simple Dreamcast VGA adapters you can find at ebay. I don't mean any composite/S-Video to VGA converters, but the VGA adapters for Dreamcast.

  • 720P is high def. 480P I believe is enhanced video but not high def. I could be wrong though.

  • I really have to support this video because while I was looking into getting the purist video via scart/rgb, I didn't approve the idea of tinkering with my system's hardware in order for doing so. It's all a matter of preference.

  • There is an easier way to get audio from your sega scart lead and bypass that 3 way scart box thing

Look for a scart breakout adapter.. its a small adapter that goes on the end of any scart cable and has 2 breakout phono audio cables for sound.. just run these into the tv or get a phono to jack adapter and run that off the phono into line in on your tv... all them adapters mentioned are very cheap and easier to organize and stuff

  • there are those of us that don't want to buy an expensive SCART to component adapter. there are other devices out there.

with mod skills you can make a small box that does the leg work and has stereo/component outs.

still the problem becomes one of aspect ratio. if you enjoy classic games i really recommend getting a good late gen CRT with lots of inputs.

CRT's have better color and contrast, classic systems were tuned for that. even with the best input old game look bad on some new TVs

  • Well if you got the skills to do a s-video mod without paying somebody to do it, then do it. Thats not why I made the video. I am simply showing you how to get the best quality imaginable on your genesis. Oh and if you look at my second video I just made, you will see the quality I get on a flat screen. Better then any CRT I have ever seen! Plus it blows away s-video. Check it out.

  • Also not everybody knows how to do a mod. This is basically a way to get the best video without modding or damaging your sega. I agree that CRT TVs look good on old genesis games. But not even close to the quality I get on my flat screen with this set up. There are also alot of people who would not mind spending the money to do it. Its not too expensive. The CSY 2100 I bought was 70 dollars. The scart cable was 20 dollars. If you like spending money on old games. Why not do this?

  • The Genesis looks muddy on my HDTV, so I'm really considering doing this to get the best picture. But some people on Sega-16 have said that playing the Genesis using component on an HDTV will result in the picture being stretched out and soft. They only recommend you do it if you have a CRT. This worries me. It seems it works great for you but I wonder if it matters that you're using the CDX. But if the picture looks sharper and more colorful, I'm all for it even if it is stretched.

  • It looks good on both my CRT and my Hi Def flat screen. You can always set it to full screen instead of wide. I will make a new video once I check out if this works on my Sega 32x coming in the mail. Believe me it works for me. Make sure you have a model 2, model 1, or CDX to draw true RGB. Also make sure that if you have a model 1 that you get the correct scart, as they seem to be wired different. Model 2 is the safest and cheapest bet. Have fun!

  • I have the model 1, and I think I found a scart cable for it on Ebay. Trouble is there doesn't seem to be any more converters (specifically the CSY-2100) on Ebay anymore. There used to be lots on there, now there's none.

  • killer video i have a question i like to ask you when you say you need scart cable is there a certain type i need like one that is made for a sega genesis or all scart cables alike please let me know if you can so i may purchase one take care 5 stars for you later !!!!!!

  • You need a Sega Genesis Scart Cable. You can fine them online or on Ebay. Now remember you dont need a scart splitter for sound if you have genesis 1 or CDX since the sound can be drawn from its existing stereo port. Have Fun!!!!

  • cool man thanks you are the best been searching for for away around doing a mod this is so much more sweet and it works on the saturn to very cool one last ? and i wont bother you any more do you think it will look real sweet on a 42 inch full 1080p sony bravia or should i size down talk to you soon take care and thank you again in advance !!!!!!

  • It looks great on my 42 inch samsung. To me its better then emulation. I could not believe my eyes the first time I saw it compared to composite.

  • hey phonedork, do you know what cable you need to hook up from the scart to the tv, can it be component cables?

  • It goes from the scart to the CSY2100 then to component cables Red, Green and Blue to TV.

  • so just the double sided component cables, red, green, blue on both sides.

  • Yes exactly! Your gonna love it!

  • alright thanks dude, i cant believe im going to love genesis more than i already love it.

  • All,

Just to let you know.... MODEL 3 SEGAs do not produce RGB and this setup will not work. Model 1, 2, and CDX work fine. I have not tried it on any other model. But I know for a fact model 3 does not produce RGB.

  • i jus got my scart and the conveter and pluged them into my 720p and i can't get a signal.

  • I have a cvs 2087. does that matter instead of csy 2100?

  • I dont know, I can only confirm that the CSY 2100 works. The best way for you guys to test this, is to maybe try it on a component bulb tv. I am wondering if the resolution on your flat screen is a factor. I have a samsung, not quite sure of the model number. But I have two sega scart cables and both of them work on the csy 2100.

  • It works on my 1080I. Thats strange?? Did the scart converter come with the AC adapter or did you buy it?

  • had to swap out the ac adapter. the one it came with was european

  • I got almost the same problem as the guy above. I had to swap the adapter since it was made for European televisions. I plugged my scart through the converter into my 32 inch plasma 480i-to-1080p television and the image was distorted. :(

  • Are you going through the spitter? If so, then bypass the splitter and plug the scart directly into the csy 2100 input and plug the component output directly into the tv. Make sure you are in full screen mode and not wide. Wide works on mine, but I am not sure what tv you have.

  • I can't find any place to buy that splitter.

    : \

  • Are you talking about the spliiter for the sound? If you have a sega model 1 or CDX you can pull the sound from the stereo port and not need the splitter.

  • Yea but I'm out of luck there too, since I have a model 2.

    : (

  • You dont need the splitter if you have a model 1 or CDX, because there is a stereo output already there in the sega to draw sound. You would only need the splitter for a model 2. Model 3 sega does not support RGB.

  • Are there any Scart cables/adaptors for NES or even 3DO, Turbo Grafix 16 systems?

I found a SNES one on ebay, but couldnt find any for the others I mentioned above.

  • The NES does not produce RGB. I believe some SNES systems do, but you have to do some kind of MOD. I have a SNES scart and tried it, but all I got was a AV signal instead of a RGB signal.

  • Yes, and you americans are lucky you dont have scart leads

having to reach around the back of the tv for about 5 minutes to plug this huuge brick into it gets annoying fast

    cool vid btw

  • dude your awesome i never knew that scart could be converted to component cheers for the info :-D

  • No problem! I just wanted to help the community.

  • Sorry I recorded with a camera. But you have to get a genesis scart cable, then from genesis scart cable into the 3 way adapter, then out the 3 way adapter with a scart to scart cable, into the csy 2100, and out as component to your tv. Then plug your stereo cables into the 3 way adapter to get the sound. Its easier if you have a model 1 or CDX, because you would not need the 3 way adapter. You simply come from the sega scart, to the csy 2100, then out as component to your tv.

  • Then draw your sound from the stereo port of your sega model 1 or CDX. No 3 way adapter would be needed. I just use it even though I have a CDX to hook up my sega saturn.

  • yo this video need light !! which cables do i need can see shit !
