I've been searching all year for music to study to.. ive gone through classical, baroque, jazz, commercial music, dubstep.. you name it - but I think Larry is the best yet
In my eyes Larry is a God, and IMHO he has never been better than at this time. There are and have been many gifted wonderful musicians and Larry is right up there with the best. His timing, feel, creativity and technical ability are exquisite. I don't cry easily, but this piece brings tears to my eyes every time, pure genius. Young guitarists with talent should study this man carefully, this is what they should aspire to. Those of us less gifted can only admire.
What a genius this guy is. I thought that Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton were the masters of the guitar but now i know this guy, well what can i say. Thanks to you tube i found something amazing today.
This is called....M U S I C....I'm not sure what you call the stuff on the radio these days. This is superb....This kind of feeling makes you a part of the song.
..at the end of one of these sets some guy walks by and says, 'hey Larry, let me bum a cigarette'. Without blinking, Larry says sure and hands him his box of Marlboro reds. We were sitting less than 4 feet from Larry for all 4 sets of this.
hi, i agree with every comment, Larry is the BEST DYNAMIC guitar player, i've never heard or seen anybody let the guitar's soul come out like Larry does. He is THE TEACHER. But here he is controlling the amps feedback with his volume pedal. Using the volume pedal in front of the amp acts like the volume knob on your guitar.
What an artist! He truly has made his instrument a portal, a window, to his soul and his feelings. Wow. He expresses how he feels and what he wants us to know so well, so articulately, so clearly.
BEST PERFOMING BALLAD SONG IN GUITAR IN THE WORLD TO THIS DAY,HEART,HEART HEART, HE AND CARLOS SANTANA .
lARRY CHANGED THE INTERPRETATION JAZZ POP BALLAD STYLE in the elct guitar, after he left Crusaders and all the guitarsplayers in the world followed him.
Guys, the guitar playing is great, but the arrangement is the worst sort of west coast diarrhea. Just awful. You can even hear the horrible DX7 sounds. I bet he hasn't played this in years. How can this guy have ever heard any of the great jazz composers of the 50's 60's or 70's and come up with this? He's so much more honest a player now.
I saw mister Carlton in 1986 at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga Ca. he is a true master. The man plays from his heart they don't get much better than this legend. I have seen alot of players in my 52 years but i know that i haven't seen anyone better than Larry Carlton and thats a fact. Thanks for posting the video bring back alot of good memories.
It is his $50,000 dumble amp! but is a mere mortal played that amp it would sound terrible! All in the hands of the master, who can contain the dumble beast!
I've played this song over and over and over again every single day since I first heard it and I never get tired of it. It's so beautiful It's touching.
Back in 1987, when I was infatuated with speed demons like Scott Henderson, Bill Connors, Edward Van Halen, Ynwgie Malmsteen, Allan Holdsworth (but I still had David Gilmour and Steve Hackett in my heart), this song proved me, once again, that you do not have to be a shredder at all, to be able to express yourself articulately and profoundly on your instrument.
For the guitar players out there, think of this. He uses a pimped out Sho Bud volume peddle and he has the overdrive set up just right so that when he increases the volume it so beautifully eases in to overdrive. I have messed around with my Ernie Ball peddle and just can not get it just right.
i find that i get closest on the bdrige and middle pups combined on my fender custom shop with a tubescreamer into and old super reverb. But that certain cutting quality in the upper middle tone is very guitar dependent i think but means a lot to the nature of the swells. . As for emgs i think most guitars that sound good with them do it in spite of the pickups - theyre so neutral. practical sure but cold and sterile in so many axes.
this is from larrys starlicks video i used to have it .just incredible.john robinson drums, abe laboriel bass, alex acuna percussion and terry trotter keys.valley arts type strat with 335 sound mike maguire.lukather used them until korean buy out.music man is his preffered choice now.larry awesome.love him on larry and lee!
Larry has many great albums but this live album defines him. It is the most soulful guitar work I have ever heard. I toured the east coast with nothing in the CD player but this CD and was never discouraged or left wanting.
Agree about the lyricism and beauty in this performance. Larry becomes one with his instrument and uses it's nuances to create a beautiful, emotional 'voice' for a this ballad. Jeff Beck comes from a very different musical place, but does similar wonderful things with ballads. They're about the only two guys who can rouch this type of stuff, this way. All melody, magic and nuance- no flash. Jeff still records melodic ballads. .Wish Larry would. again. This song is decades old- and wonderful.
Thanks for putting that on youtube. Funny how everyone else has the same response to this tune as I have.... everytime I've ever listened to it it brings tears... how weird as I'm not a teary bloke... I'd love to hear the very end though where he plays those sweet harmonics, swelling each one. If anyone can put the full version on I'd love it!
Mr Carlton is really a master, we all know. But it's not only about mastering guitar. I't also about composition, improvisation and so on. This song married perfectly the ability on the instruments and the ability to follow an inspirational flow. It's not common, even among "greater names" (LC is underrated yes).
Finally... Recording Dynamics! A billion miles far from broadcasting material. This is pleasure. That's the way we want to hear.
I just tried to play this song at home, with my Fender Stratocaster. I know all the notes fairly well, but to be able to re-create all of the embellishments with my volume pedal (the beautiful feedback and octave harmonics Larry does) this song requires, I need more volume out of my 50W Marshall than I can have in a house, with my wife and my little 4 yr old screaming at me to turn it down! LOL
I stand in awe... no better way to put it, RadicalGuitar. I like to shred en play loud myself too, but when I just saw this vid, it seems like time stood still. Sometimes you experience these moments in your busy life. To me, this was one of them. Damn, this is guitar playing in optima forma, true beauty. Hat off to Mr. Carlton!
This track floors me every time! Why can't more guitarists strive to play like this more often. It always seems to be about how loud and fast they can play most of the time. Don't get me wrong, I love guitarists from all genres, but guys like this can say more with one note than most guitarists can say in a lifetime.
Ain't no other guitar player like Larry Carlton. A true original. In a music world filled with so many guitarists focusing on speed playing, it's refreshing and a half to hear and experience a class-player like Carlton. I never tire of listening to him. He's just amazing!
Amazing delivery. Note choice, feel and beautiful execution. Those volume swells are just divine. Larry's my favourite guitarist. Always has been. Never tire of his playing. He has just the right amount of jazz and blues flavours. Not too much of each. Amazing player.

I personally believe that in this piece, we just saw how a true master
plays the instrument: with absolute tonal command, that less can be more,
that it is not the instrument but the player that counts, and that the
composition is the canvass with which to paint a rich blend of texture,
feel, balance and grace.
