  • I never cared for this film, although the whole race issue is quite intriguing throughout it. My Mom was darker than my sister and I, and neither of us could have EVER thought about pulling some CRAP like this!

  • He spoke about it once on a old love connection show. He was blackballed and Arsenio Hall stood by his side in which Arsenio lived in the same area in Beverly Hills Ca as Chuck. That was something that the producers of the show definitely didn't want to hear.

  • Chuck Woolery spoke about his grandmother being Black. After he spoke about it he was somewhat blackballed soon after.

  • Wow! I didn't know Chuck Woolery was part black. He was cool on that dating show back in the day.

  • Where are you getting this information? I looked online and can't find anything about chuck having a black g-ma.

  • Regarding the message about black female stars passing for white in Hollywood...well...there are rumours that Dinah Shore, Dorothy Lamour, Linda Darnell, Ava Gardner, and others were doing just that. If blonder than blonde Carol Channing can suddenly open up and claim to have had a black grandparent...who knows?

  • Dinah Shore admitted to being creole. Back in the 80's Phil Donahue counted over 4 million (part) blacks who probaly disappeared into the white race.

  • @sbenn75 Wow Iam learning something new here.

  • I have seen enough multi-racial and biracial people in my own family to see just how "white" some people can comeout... BUT even with Carol Channing- I can see beyond the blonde hair and light skin to see how strong her grandmother's genes are. It's in her strong jawline that it is most evident.. and the shape of her eyes- hell- I question just how white some people who are "white" really are. Just like there are many blacks w/ white in them, I feel that there are white with black in them.

  • god this sickens me

  • Peola is very beautiful!

  • when I first saw this as a child, I thought the girl "passing" was horrible. Now I see how sad it was for people who looked white yet weren't. They had the oppotunity to escape the terrible treatment of part of their families, but were probably disowned by the other part. We are all God's children. We all have a lot to answer for with all the pain these type of things cause!

  • piola or viola or whatever is a major bitch!

  • This version was directed by John Stahl, a silent director who had formed a company with silent queen Mae Murray, she of the bee-stung lips and over-acting. Try turning off your sound, and you'll see how it's silent style, with big pauses for dialogue cards and music to be inserted.

  • Im a 6'3" 250lbs. guy and this film almost makes me cry everytime i see it. ALMOST!!! LOL

  • To me, a more astounding story is that of Merle Oberon. She was half-Indian and kept her mother around, passing her off as her maid. She was in the top ranks of Hollywood stars, maybe most notably for "Wuthering Heights." What's especially ironic is that if you look at her films and still photos, she is clearly not all white, and there was no attempt to whiten her up, so to speak. The truth about her was revealed after she died, but can it be that people knew, but didn't care?

  • fredi washington was a phenomenal actress. she was offered stardom- the level of Garbo, if she would deny her race and become a white actress. Fredi refused to deny her race for wealth & stardom. she chose instead to fight for the civil rights of black people.she started the Negro Actors Guild 1937. the Guild would lobby against stereotype casting by Hollywood of black actors & against discrimination.

this world suffered a great loss- it was never to realize the talent of Fredi washington.

  • I totally agree with you, but it would have been interesting to see a black woman (passing for white) staring in romantic roles with white actors, then later telling the world she's black. Hollywood would been shook to its core and help expose the industry's racism.

  • so true

  • I wish I could see the rest of this version...Ive have the other one. The daughter and the other white lady look the same to me in this clip...

  • i think they sell this version at walmart (both versions)

  • Both versions are available at Amazondotcom or ebay.
