What a great video. I posted one a couple weeks ago and it is utterly ridiculous compared to this masterpiece. I thoroughly enjoyed this fine video. Very cool.
Awesome clips! When we were there, I was far to afraid of them to get close. I thought for sure we were going to see someone get taken down when they thought they would get really close like the elk were tame or something. Bet that phone cam wouldn't be much defense up against those antlers.
I loved the compilation. I also loved how the females were watching to see the outcome of the "battles". Estes Park is always a "fun" place during mating season. To all those that think they hang around Estes year round, they don't. They will show up alot, but the true chaos is during mating season. Also, when they are on the golf course, remember they were ther first, not the golf course and they don't exactly understand human property lines. And hunting keeps herds healthy.
I love the elk but I wish they would stay in the park. It is just not natural to be hanging out on the golf course. This year there were not as many downtown which is great!
When we start manipulating ecosystems the results are sometimes hard to measure and take time to show effects. Time that most folks don't have the patience of trained eye to see. Meanwhile educated and trained resource managers see trends that will prove to not be beneficial to humans, the land, and the critters who live there.
As John Muir once said (I paraphrase from memory), "pick up a rock and you will soon see that it is connected to everything else in the universe."
On the whole, humans have not understood the predator/prey relationship of wildlife. Remove the predator and the prey become unhealthy. They will eat more vegetation than the land can hold up to. This sends ripples into other portions of the ecosystem. Research has shown that removing predators can affect the rate of erosion and increase the amount of silt in streams, then affecting the spawning of fish. The reduced reproduction of fish then begins to affect other compenents of the ecosystem.
I spent 5 weeks in Yellowstone as a crew boss on the lines of the North Fork fire in 1988. I was able to walk and work in a large area of the park as the North Fork fire (human caused) was about 500,000 acres. I've followed the resulting research about the changes caused by the fires that year. I worked with educated and trained foresters (4 of us) on my strike team and we all concluded, after being there 3 days that huge fires occur in the park about every 300-500 years-research verified that.
a couple of decades and the resulting balance reestablished will prove to be beneficial. You can't look at much in nature over a short period and draw reasonable conclusions. I've been involved in management decisions that people nearly hung us for and then have spoken to these people 10-30 years later who said we absolutely did the right thing. Of course, we knew that all along. A science background and many years of experience is the key.
If you don't see the same number of elk in and around human developed areas and along roadways, it might very well be that the elk are now more naturally wary of occupying open areas as much as they did in the past. Predators and fire were removed from Yellowstone a hundred or more years ago. Neither proved beneficial to the elk population. The elk population was doing just fine without us interfering by putting out all the fires and killing all the wolves. Give this reintroduction of the wolf--
Wolves benefit the elk population. In Yellowstone there were too many elk at the point the wolves were introduced. The wolves have removed the most unhealthy portion of the population, which had grown in numbers above the carrying capacity of the land since the fires of 1988 resulted in the creation of ample elk habitat. Examination of elk population before and after the fires as well as before and after the introduction of wolves shows a stable, healthy population.
Sure hope they dont ever introduce Canadian Wolves to that area. Go to Yellowstone and you'll not see elk anywhere but in towns like Mammoth cause of the wolves. The herds are way down since the introduction of the wolf :(
Elk Are one of Gods most awesome creations. Antlers are an amazing tissue! Just imagine, Bulls can grow that rack in 5 1/2 months! Then they loose their antlers only to grow another larger set! I bought some naturally shed elk antlers from a place called Yellowstone Antlers on the website you can actually buy the naturally shed Elk, Deer and Moose antlers!
Great video. I am a Colorado Native and got some great photos of rutting season that year. We visit Estes several times a year every year, since I was 3. We saw a male with 25 females up around that area in the park of the river and grasslands in your video. We were trying to take photos and be quiet and I didn't appreciate the tourists yelling "OMG it is an elk OMG" at the top of their lungs. Awesome video. You live up there? I wish I did.
wow that's incredible!! i know the couple of times we've visited up there, we've had to stop for the elk to cross...such beautiful animals!! you live in not only a MOST beautiful little town, but the folks there are wonderful!! we always enjoy our visits so very much :)

This was a fantastic video!! I'm really shocked you had the two cows in estrous fighting in the river!! That was amazing. Definitely saving this video.
YYYEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! I grew up hunting elk with my dad. Got my first bull at the age of 12, scored 335, and let me tell you, I BRRAAGGGEEDD to all those boys who said I couldn't hunt because I'm a girl. What now boys???? :p LOL. Wonderful memories. I loved being out there with my dad. Even if we didn't get anything. Just the smell of the pine, and the sound of the elk bugling over on the next canyon. I can't wait until college is over, and I can go again. Just two more years.
i've seen what the bull elk can do.......how do i know?....u ask....... well, i have been a vitcim of an elk attack.... on my truck.. you see....i was ok til i went outside of my truck and got attacked by a bull elk.. that was my faulte.. do not stand in front of a bull elk during rutting seasons.... and dont exepecet to get attacked.... beacause you will...if you sound or smell like a another bull elk... so expect to get attacked by one..ok??????????????????
I love the idiots trying to walk up to them to take a picture, just cause they are in town doesn't mean they are not wild! I'd like to see an elk break a horn off in one of these morons. Animals in the rut are like teenage boys.
This is a great compilation, thanks so much for taking the time to put it together! Ive lived in Evergreen only since January & I eagerly have been awaiting this momentous season of ridiculous animalistic inhibition! Hopefully I can get up there in the next few days.
Stupid Guy at 1:47! These are wild animals man. It's people like you that get killed by grizzly bears and later they have to shoot or put down that bear because it was being a bear. Thats dumb!
Oh the stupidity of human kind. People are seriously hurt and even killed by Elk in rut because they are too moronic to keep their distance!!! All for the sake of a close up.
I wanna live near Colorado Estes park now, hah. I love how this is so normal to people. Sharing a town with Elk. Dangerous but beautiful. And do they really make that honing noise? Sounds so unnatural lol. But I LOVE elk whens the bugle. Beautiful sound <3. LOL at the the boke gy and the guy with a camera phone. I love how it's so natural to go jogging past a group of elk on your sidewalk XD. @4:41 GIRL FIGHT haha. Of course the girls use their hooves and the guys their heads lmao AMAZING VIDEO
@KristiH480 I just came back from Estyes Park and loved it, its beautiful, the only bad thing was that I didnt get to see any Elk or deer : ( The only animal I saw was a little black bear.
@saltycaribou TONS of elk! just got back from a weekend trip there, i live about an hour away. they were hanging out on a golf course all weekend, bugling and grazing
Estes park is awesome. I was there 5 years ago and almost ran into 3 elk with my car while driving to breakfast. They were casually strolling across the street in the middle of town. You won't see that in florida.

I like the music. It is a different choice, but I thought it was good. What I'd love to see is the unedited video of this. People just lose their common sense when they go on vacation, eh?
@jazzjasmin Employees at the YMCA of the Rockies near Estes Park like to say that people leave their brains at home when they go on vacation. Like the stupid guy at 1:47. People try to get to close, try to get a picture of their kid riding an elk, ask 'when do the elk come up to the windows so we can take pictures', when do the deer turn into elk, ect. It's funny ;)
How fascinating!! Thank you for sharing this with us, and please ignore all the dumb comments people have made about the accompanying music you included.... it was a good fit! Super video~
I like the music, it makes it funnier. Like it's "Club Elk".. You'd be bored wo the music- Just like everyone else, but it's so easy to bitch @ a video...
The idea was probably to keep it fast paced, 8 minutes of good footage would have been very slow wo music, try editing then watching 8 minutes of animal footage yourself once before you take shots...
Please get rid of the annoying stupid shitty useless noise. I cannot term it..."music" it is on no use. It doesn't belong. The elk sound alone would be very good.
Why was my comment removed?! With all the filth posted on youtube, you remove my comment about the related Gloria nipple video associated with this elk video and how I'd like to send this to my young relatives and can't? Nice. Can anyone tell me why the nipple video is a related video to elk sparring and rutting anyway??
I would bet that Gary and Kris (The makers of the elk video) are just as unhappy about it as you are. I wonder if there is a way to disassociate the two. Perhaps this is something that can be or has been addressed in another YouTube forum.
It is nice to know there is still a place in this country where the wildlife is still abundant and thriving..although this is perfect example of how human development has affected them and their natural habitat..very sad
The reason the elk are so abundant here is BECAUSE of the human development. Two golf courses for them to feed on, plus the millions of dollars worth of landscaping done by the town, and no hunting because of all the houses. No hunting to the west because it is Nat. Park and to the east most of the accessible land is private.
I seriously saw a pamphlet once in Mexico encouraging illegals to flock there, and to boulder, and so they could start their leeching... Has that happened yet? Have you noticed dirty diapers in the parking lots and public pools yet? Any Gangs in the elementary schools - do half the kids only speak Spanish yet? It's coming, thanks to the bastard hippie generation which gave the country away... Enjoy living amongst their violence, poverty & filth..
I was born in Longmont, and went to Estes Park a lot. I still go there with my family. I felt like paparazzi invading people's lives just to get an entertaining shot. The elk lived there first, and we have so invaded their habitat that they can't even go through their natural rituals without someone walking up with a cell phone to take a photo. Leave them alone. They only come into the property we're on because we've left them no where else to go.
Thanks Gary & Kris you guys rock, and I loved the music!! Yes people do risk their lives and their childrens lives to get pixs, I've been watching this for 15 years.
I used to love seeing all the deer in my yard, on the property I lived on in Colorado. Now I have Lyme Disease. Do deer ticks feed on elk too? The local health department is telling people that there is no danger of Lyme in Co.,their own literature on tick borne infections says that borrelia is one of the pathogens transmitted by ticks in Co. The spirochete that causes Lyme is called Borrelia Burgdorferi. So, are they saying we don't have the "right kind" of Borrelia? I tested positive Wblot IGM
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Great footage, really shitty editing. Especially from so-called pros (a TV station). I think if you lose the generic music, which sucks, and cut from nearly 8 minutes to nearly 4, you'd have something really special. I do love the animals, including the ones with cell phone cameras and the ones with tangled hangers on their heads. That was great. I didn't at all mind the bugling. It was better than Tom DeLay's dancing and far more natural.
man i live in az and the rut is great but that makes me want to live in estes! walk to school and pass bugling bulls every morning! that would be the life, there were a few nice bulls in there, some with some long mains
Crazy! I lived in Estes for a year and a half and saw one elk rut, and I never saw them acting like this. I know they like to hang out on the golf course, but I never saw them by the visitor's center, road and river when I was there. Ahhh, this makes me miss Colorado so bad!
I only watched this video for about 7 minutes and already have a headache from the Screaming Elks... How do people in Estes park ever get any sleep...
No, I live on an acre in the quiet peaceful Sonoran Desert.. I don't think its so much the Noise, its the PITCH of their mating call that gets to me...
so jealous!! I live in DC area and traffic and people are much worse than elk!! My friend lived in estes park for several years and they were everywhere....their pitch/sound was unique to me but I could see it getting a bit annoying sometimes......
Beautiful animals,,I miss Colorado!!! I agree tho,the tourists shouldnt get so close to these animals,,they are wild and they have no sense when they are in rut,,they will attack anything in their way,Tourist need to keep their distance,,after all,you are in THIER territory.
There is no way to comment on this madness in this few words. Someone( I hope not a child) will be hurt or killed, and the animals will pay the price, not these idiots tempting fate by treating these wild animals in rut as tame. Estes is only about a mile from the Park. What to do? I dont know, but this is an accident waiting to happen, and given the stupidity of these tourists, it will surely do so.
Folks, they are WILD ANIMALS IN HEAT. THEY WILL KILL YOU IF YOU GET IN THE WAY.
Male deer of any species are very stupid during the rut.

I WANNA GO HUNTING! But I wonder how many idiots get seriously hurt while trying to get a friggin' picture on their cell phone!

they need to introduce some wolves in the park to control the population. Elk in Estes run around like rats in Chicago.

wolves are more dangerous than Elk, I SAY KILL A WOLF TO SAVE THE ELK!!!!An Elk will not try to eat you!!!!

I like the music. It is a different choice, but I thought it was good. What I'd love to see is the unedited video of this. People just lose their common sense when they go on vacation, eh?
jazzjasmin 2 years ago 6
I would like it, if it was all the sounds of nature & no music, the sound of nature is Great!!!!
goattuff 1 year ago
@jazzjasmin Employees at the YMCA of the Rockies near Estes Park like to say that people leave their brains at home when they go on vacation. Like the stupid guy at 1:47. People try to get to close, try to get a picture of their kid riding an elk, ask 'when do the elk come up to the windows so we can take pictures', when do the deer turn into elk, ect. It's funny ;)
jennyclarkbar 4 months ago
Innapropriate music and the editing leaves much to be desired. but a good idea otherwise!

There are some monster bulls in this footage. Excellent video.

Hey great footage of the elk!

How fascinating!! Thank you for sharing this with us, and please ignore all the dumb comments people have made about the accompanying music you included.... it was a good fit! Super video~
utrose4321 2 years ago
I like the music, it makes it funnier. Like it's "Club Elk".. You'd be bored wo the music- Just like everyone else, but it's so easy to bitch @ a video...
The idea was probably to keep it fast paced, 8 minutes of good footage would have been very slow wo music, try editing then watching 8 minutes of animal footage yourself once before you take shots...

People do get to close and sometimes get more involved than they wanted to be (there was a local TV news item on this recently).
jgmclees 2 years ago
Please get rid of the annoying stupid shitty useless noise. I cannot term it..."music" it is on no use. It doesn't belong. The elk sound alone would be very good.
fiddlers111 2 years ago
Why was my comment removed?! With all the filth posted on youtube, you remove my comment about the related Gloria nipple video associated with this elk video and how I'd like to send this to my young relatives and can't? Nice. Can anyone tell me why the nipple video is a related video to elk sparring and rutting anyway??
gosunnyfun 2 years ago 2
I would bet that Gary and Kris (The makers of the elk video) are just as unhappy about it as you are. I wonder if there is a way to disassociate the two. Perhaps this is something that can be or has been addressed in another YouTube forum.

It is nice to know there is still a place in this country where the wildlife is still abundant and thriving..although this is perfect example of how human development has affected them and their natural habitat..very sad
PalmSpringsEDGE 2 years ago
@PalmSpringsEDGE

My father used to have to walk all over the Rocky Mtn.'s to find an elk when I was young. I don't think he'd believe the numbers of elk now.

The only urban management needed is for the people to get out of the way of nature!

Typical city dork. You think the Elk would still be around if hunters didn't protect them for future hunts?

Fantastic footage, thanks for sharing this.
Was there last weekend and it was post-rut and the elk were pretty calm.

It's probably a good idea to give those animals plenty of room. Don't sneak up real close. They aren't pets!

Looks like they need to do some urban management for sure. Awesome video, really cool animals.
jruzich43 2 years ago

Janunder 2 years ago
man i live in az and the rut is great but that makes me want to live in estes! walk to school and pass bugling bulls every morning! that would be the life, there were a few nice bulls in there, some with some long mains
deserthntr 2 years ago
Crazy! I lived in Estes for a year and a half and saw one elk rut, and I never saw them acting like this. I know they like to hang out on the golf course, but I never saw them by the visitor's center, road and river when I was there. Ahhh, this makes me miss Colorado so bad!

We're in an Aux AFB Approach Zone. we get maybe a half dozen low flying aircraft during the day. rarely on the week end... I can handle those,

Beautiful animals,,I miss Colorado!!! I agree tho,the tourists shouldnt get so close to these animals,,they are wild and they have no sense when they are in rut,,they will attack anything in their way,Tourist need to keep their distance,,after all,you are in THIER territory.
LongviewLady 2 years ago
There is no way to comment on this madness in this few words. Someone( I hope not a child) will be hurt or killed, and the animals will pay the price, not these idiots tempting fate by treating these wild animals in rut as tame. Estes is only about a mile from the Park. What to do? I dont know, but this is an accident waiting to happen, and given the stupidity of these tourists, it will surely do so.
Folks, they are WILD ANIMALS IN HEAT. THEY WILL KILL YOU IF YOU GET IN THE WAY.
