I can't imagine NOT having one. I don't have to worry about rushing home to shut the door or walking through a foot of snow to let them out. The cost is cheap to install one if you factor the amount of time you save over the course of their lives opening and closing the door. We have doggy doors to, I calculated that I was spending an hour a day putting 4 dogs on runs so I knew that I'd have to put in an Automatic Chicken Coop Door. My video is posted as well.
i don't know if i really believe in the automatic door. i think a person should get up and spend time with there chickens... i myself have done this my whole life and lived on a farm..
@Rygel Use a vertically revolving door with a bolt to lock it. the chicken are able to open the door themselves unless the lock is in place. this method is faster, cheaper than other methods and doesn't require external power. A bolt attached to a linear solenoid (tubular type STA ideal for lock and unlock operations) which could be powered by a small solar energy accumulator.

Interesting, I'm looking for a cheap method for an auto door opener. The prices are crazy for prebuilt doors!
