  • Best song in GTA 4.

  • What a voice!

  • Yea I know But being a Product of that lifestyle im sure you can appreciate My Hostlilty when it come to this subject... My favorite song from Gil Scott Heron Is "THE PRISONER"

  • 6 people, most have a home full of love!!! lol

  • gil is so great !!

  • soul song right here, rip late and great gil scott herion

  • thank you gil scott

  • Don't feed the trolls.

  • i heard it from off late registration and fell in love with the hook, I knew it was a sample.

  • RIP

  • hey, richardmbowman, tried to personally send you, but didnt go through. Thanks for the emotional response. I, too, am a huge Scott fan and was fortunate to see him several times in NYC. Never did he waver from his missile stinging assaults on social and political injustices all the while keeping a firm hand on the feel good musical tones. Check out Asha Puthli doing "Right down here" Might make your knees rubbery.

  • GTA 4 FUCK YEAH

  • @nuahsx gta 4? was this song in there?

  • I OVERSTAND !!!

  • Scripture has been proven that the Sword has been placed in the home; from the time of David-King of Israel; Mother against Daughter and Father against Son and the foils will be of the Man's household. (Paraphrased) Read the KJV Bible.

  • CSME123 3 On The Beam, for our nation Treasure Mr GSH !!!

  • thank you hip hop because it opened up this generation to the past

  • yeah, this is a classic from the godfather of spoken word aka rap. however, check out Esther Phillips cover.

  • @stitch661 Yes! "Little" Esther Phillips did a powerful version of this song on record. Comparable to Gil's. Live, in the flesh, Esther took possession of this song. She owned it! And I don't say that lightly. I idolize Gil Scott-Heron. But, as a very young man, I saw her do this. The old men in the audience were in tears! It IS a powerful song. And done properly, it becomes/became more. Rest well Gil, my friend. You have done your work well.

  • Eu adoro isso. E bem barato. E otimo!

  • this was recorded before copy cat kanye was BORN !!!!!!

  • "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"

  • deep!

  • a sad but powerful song.

  • As an aspiring teacher, and Computer Scientist with a Concentration on Afrikana Studies (the man won't allow it to be a minor, let alone a major) I have seen the depletion of common sense, knowledge of self and total disrespect for people with the advent of the internet...we have made a hateful, spoiled generation come about, that will ultimately fall for their own arrogance and junk talking....they can't fight, and always call the police, or get a gun...Home....It's where the hatred is

  • @BHDread mate you hit the nail with the hammer with that comment respect its a shame some people cant hear what he and others like him are sayin

  • GIL = TRILL SPILL !!!!

  • Until I found this song on here, I had only heard it once about 13 years ago, but that song stayed with me. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is." How could I forget a song title like that? The emotional content of this is just too powerful.

  • Vou dormi com isso no ouvido hj!!!...

  • Powerful song! First time hearing it

  • I ask of nobody to thumbs this up simply because it'll probably seem like a thumb-up-whore comment if i do, but I do think it's pretty telling that this video has 260k views and only 6 dislikes.

  • Most people speed up old songs when they sample, but Kanye slowed it down

  • @BoxOfOranges84 alot of people slow down samples lol

  • R.I.P

  • @ASSEMblerEX You got it wrong my friend. Kanye borrowed the sounds from him. This song is original and came out before Kanye even thought about producing.

  • @ASSEMblerEX U obviously aren't educated on the GENIUS of Mr. Gil-Scott Heron, May he Rest Peacefully ~

He was, is and ALWAYZ will be a LEGEND !

  • @ASSEMblerEX You can't be serious...if you are, I am officially ashamed of my generation.

    Please tell me your kidding.

Look at the release date of his album.

  • @jcurry3school LOL He's an idiot.

  • @ASSEMblerEX ARE YOU INSANE KANYE SAMPLED THIS FROM HIM!!!!! KANYE WASNT EVEN BORN WHEN THIS CAME OUT!!!!! LEARN MUSIC PLEASE

  • @DoNLiFtEd

It is a good thing in a way, when I was younger (21 years old now), listening to Late Registration when it came out, I thought it was really good. Now I know better when it comes to Kanye.

But without it, I would not have heard this classic.

  • @goldmeistergeneral very similar to what I say to the people who hate on the ones who comment on how they heard a "classic" on a grand theft auto game.

  • @DoNLiFtEd You just took the troll bait...smh he commented the same in some other songs Kanye sampled.

  • @DoNLiFtEd There are 6ppl who think Kanye was born when this classic was relased

  • @ASSEMblerEX i don't care if you're kidding or not, you are a fucking idiot.......

  • @ASSEMblerEX Dumbass!!!

  • @ASSEMblerEX obvious troll is obvious.

  • @ASSEMblerEX hahahhahahaha in the words of ochocinco; child please!

  • @ASSEMblerEX lol nice bait

  • @ASSEMblerEX your a fucken moron

  • @ASSEMblerEX Haha you fucking idiot this song was released six years before that talentless dickhead was even born.

  • @ASSEMblerEX 'Cock a job Kanye' wasn't even born when this timeless classic blessed the hearts of so many. You my friend are a spanner.

  • @TrippaMusic hahaha spanner, love that insult

  • @ASSEMblerEX LOL IDIOT

  • @ASSEMblerEX I quit life

  • @ASSEMblerEX hahahah fag

  • @ASSEMblerEX dumb fuck, fuck you, and fuck ronald reagen.

  • Kanye

  • THIS SONG IS DEDICATED TO MY POPS R.I.P. FUCK THE WHITE MAN AND HIS DRUGS!

  • @MISTER45100 Are the Colombian drug dealers the "white man," or are they some other color?

  • @mvonwahlde no but the C.I.A. is... you dont know shit about where herion comes from!

  • @MISTER45100 I honestly don't think that Gil Scott-Heron was saying "fuck the white man."

  • @mvonwahlde He's talking about his home life. He's famous and has been outspoken about his substance abuse and where it came from.

  • @mvonwahlde "Kick it, quit it"/"Home is where the needle is"

  • Even though I'm only 20,I get so mad when people bring up Kanye West because in my opinion,Kanye don't even begin to compare to Mr.Gil Scott Heron.........Mr. Heron seemed to be a very unselfish man while Kanye is a very self centered cry baby!

  • THE GREATEST-POET

  • Kanye is brilliant at choosing what to sample. 'My Way Home' is such a good song and anyone who hasn't heard it should check it out

  • Wow! Even the Bible does declare...."why stand there gazing at others asking them what is that evil light in your own eye, first the United States must remove this beam from our own eyes. " words of the Prophet Jesus

  • ohh, kanye west sampled this lol

  • This song tears at my heart. I adore this man. Don't want to believe he's gone.

  • @JasOrdinaire

I loved him too. I had no idea how much til just this year. In the words of Ossie Davis expressed of El-Hajj Mailk El Shabazz...."And we will know him for what he was and is - a Prince - our own black shining Prince!" No one could be more fitting of this title than Brother Gil Scott Heron. God Bless

  • @marianance

Thanks for sharing your thoughts... and the beautiful quote.

  • this is real music R.I.P

  • Saw GSH in the Jazz Cafe, London, about 20 years ago. He was on good form and I'm so glad I went to see the man. Like so many flawed geniuses he had something special about him. Who else could write song like this? You've got to have been through it to know. And he knew.

  • damn he was fine

  • I'm not a militant. They're the ones with the guns. I'm just trying to get what I already paid for.

  • I heard on the news that the "Godfather of Rap" died. I was expecting to see a story of a gangster rapper. When I heard it was Gil Scott Heron, I was shocked because I consider him a great jazz musician, writer and arranger. I would never categorize Gil with todays rap garbage. They may have been influenced by him, but Gil Scott is a classic. His music will be praised forever. Todays rappers can't hold a match up to him. Gil's music cuts right to the soul and gangster rap doesn't do that.

  • Comment removed

  • His music reminded me of all the good times I had in my life during that time.

  • Kanye West brought me here.

  • @Zerenjo you better fuck off back to him again then.

  • @MrDanielWalls Why so nasty? Kanye West introduced me to a wonderful artist.

  • @Zerenjo Yeah but Kanye West is still a douche.

  • @MrDanielWalls He's not a douche. His ego is a little to big, but i don't let that get in the way of his lyrical genius. He's one of the best rappers out right now.

  • this is so true

  • mannn damnn..the best always go..r.i.p. Gsh

  • I listen to this song regularly, and didn't know he died until I looked in the description box ! Damn, R.I.P Gil Scott-Heron

  • My heart hurts too..just can't accept he's gone. Love you always Gil xx

  • "Home is where i live inside my white powder dreams, home was once an empty vacuum that's filled now with my silent screams.

Home is where the needle marks, try to heal my broken heart. And it might not be such a bad idea if i never, if i never went home again."

There is no other musician in the world that can compete with the lyrical genius of Gil Scott-Heron, RIP

  • @CSME123 Thanks. Been listening to this for years and always heard "white collar dreams" Now I know what he really says. It makes sense. RIP Gil.

  • @CSME123 Alive today? Sure I agree Scott-Heron was a fantastic singer/songwritter, but I hope you'll agree Paul McCartney passed him there.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheMrwouldyourather

Why would you hope someone would agree with you? Everyone has their own view on what the lyrics mean to them.I am 20 and while I like Dylan and McCartney,I also feel that no one was on the level of Mr. Gil Scott Heron and Tupac Shakur,it's all according to your life experiences or someone close to you...

  • @Syyymone Odd question, really. People, naturally, would want other people's approval in their opinions, which in turn would strengthen their opinion on the subject. By nature humans are like this, just as humans naturally have different opinions. I wasn't forcing my opinion onto him, or anyone else for that matter, and so I don't see your reasoning in this situation? If anything, I was merely presenting my opinion and not imposing it.

  • @TheMrwouldyourather

The fact that you stated to the poster 'I would hope you agree" seems to suggest to one that can comprehend that you are indeed imposing your view on another person but anyways I'm done with this....

  • @CSME123 Yes Mr. Heron may be the all time lyrical genius, even more than Bob Dylan because he was so soulful musically and lyrically. There is one guy doing it today on that level, but unfortunately he's not "out there" yet. But I think he's also a soulful lyrical genius.

Just search: Rahi High Rome subtitles

  • why dislike

  • I was raised in a NJ suburb in a white family. Had everything I could want for. I fell hard for Gil's dream in my early teens. He is still one of my biggest and deepest musical(and life) influences. This man isn't just a hero for his race, but for all races. Drift and dream Gil, I will continue your fight..

  • He died on the 27th? I had no idea, I have been singing this song for a over a week now non-stop, it keeps coming back to me. My band did a rock version of this about 10 years ago...This guy was really deep...He will be missed.

  • Pure unadulterated Genius, meaning sublime and direct at the same time. Sweet Soul, Dark heart - no God so your matter becomes what matters - living and dead. You live on...

    Thank you GSH

  • Still, America? We have to do better than this!

  • 5 people went home and stayed! RIP Mr Heron

  • A great man's poetry... RIP Gil Scott Heron (born April 1, 1949 - May 27, 2011) Inspiration of millions and the start one of the beginning pioneers of hiphop. The man died exactly a week as of today and I fear we may neva again c da likes of another like him..."The revolution will not be televised"

  • People wake up and hear what our prophets are saying.

  • G.S.H is so real and poetic it is almost eerie! :)

  • I mourn the passing and celebrate the life of a strong , beautiful and fragile human being who god blessed with enormous talent and who spoke our heart both in love anger and pain. MY BELOVED BROTHER YOU ARE NOW WITH THE ANGELS AND WE LOVE YOU . GUIDANCE AND PROTECTION. YOUR SONGS WILL ALWAYS BE WITH AN EARTH AND ITS PEOPLE MOST OF WHOM HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO LOVE. you represent the best of who we are. GO WITH GOD

  • kanye - my way home

  • @larry89: Yeah he sample this great song but I also have a love/hate w Kanye so Fuck him right now!! Gil Scott is gone to the House...

  • Think about this...1971..he was just 22 when this was cut...22!! Such refreshing honesty. What a soul we were blessed with. I hope his art gets a full, fair shake! RIP...we are the ones who are at a loss.

  • @dalerates ...Gil Scott -Heron's art get a full shake from those who supported him all of his years as an artist and from people like me who has been listening since I was 11 and I'm 20.Only the most spiritual people (not religious) can comprehend his music .

We crave this kind of music because we are seekers. There are very few seekers in this world.Others are conquered and they will NEVER have the mindset to understand this kind of music. Many people will never be ready for Gil Scott-Heron.

  • @Syyymone Well said, Thank you

  • @ButterFlyGirlFly1 ...Thank You Butterfly.I am so late responding.

  • @dalerates

Indeed. We are the ones who are at a loss...

G.S.H: A true Revolutionary, Poetic Maestro, Visionary, Prophet, Renaissance Man, a Legend in his own time...

"A junkie walking through the twilight -I'm on my way home... to turn your sick soul inside out so that the world, so the world could watch you die. Unfortunately, Brother Gil, some of us have to die so that others may live. We will always love & honor you Gil.

  • @dalerates So true!

  • r.i.p dude.. even though this is the only song i heard

  • RIP Gil Scott Heron. =(

  • 5 people love going back home for thanksgiving

  • Kanye brought me here but I also heard this on GTA 4 once and it sounded familiar.

  • I had never heard of Scott-Heron before a few weeks ago, when I first heard this song. And I thought it was great! And when he died 5 days ago, I learned that he was a great force of inspiration for my favourite music genre, hip hop, as well. So the man deserve a lot of praise.

Rest in peace Gil. You will be remembered.

  • EPIC!!!!!!!!!!! R.I.P. BROTHER GIL

  • this is a heavy loss... the weight is on our shoulders now.

  • @eb0nikz

Always was, baby. That is part of the beauty and sadness of it, you know?

  • The lyrics are so modern! I don't know what I mean by that, and don't take this the wrong way, but the words are like something you'd hear on the radio sung by some mopey angst-fueled adolescent band.

That's a compliment, because this guy makes the words sound real, not like I wanna slap him the face like those singers I was talking about.

I just regret that the only reason I'm aware of him is because of the news of his passing. Just listening to "I'm New Here" is devastating.

  • @kmacmuzikmafia27

You know now. No shame in that. And, I agree.

  • @LilithLorelai

    Thank you :)

  • i cant even speak right now because my birthday is May 27 1993, and he died last friday. im so depressed now. god take lil wayne drake or flocka, but dont take the good things...

  • a couple years before i saw bob marley live in boston, i got to see gil and brian perform at brandeis juniversity, it was a fabulous show

  • soul and heart is hurting... we all got to go some time.... he is on his way home

    RIP!!!!

    james missouri

  • This is one of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard. And I've heard lots. And yes, Esther Phillip's version is equally moving (As a very young man, I SAW her perform the cut. Oh My God!). But Gil, you are one of the very great poets of our time. Yes, you will be sorely missed.

  • Gilbert "Gil" Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011)

R.I.P. Gil! I remember starting several Sunday brunches with Cognac-coctails with you down @ 'Mr. D's' in Zurich, in the early 90's, whilst you were teaching me English...you were a fairly good teacher, a wonderful poet, an awesome musician and a flirty dirty old man ;-)...thank you for all the good times and the CDs'!!!!

  • A Master

  • biiiiig shout out to @oneluv72 the wayne and drake generation will never feel this authenticity of this music, it would totally be different if this generations music was silly but the everyday lifestyle was serious and of great value, smh the youth is too busy focused on materials

  • @PuRpleWoRldJ @oneluv72 i respect ya'll comment but i feel offended by it. its tough to get real good music like this nowadays, so instead of twakin crap y dont you get up n try a make a diff. i know this guy cause my uncle is a huge jazz fan but not all of us had that priv. You guys know this music by default cause you grew up with it while we now have to make an effort to get good music, And we do hav our legendary artist that when they die we will cry eg Lauren Hill "B da Diff u wanna c"

  • We are all aware of the simple fact that everything has a beginning and an end. His death has had a profound effect on me. One of sadness and one of joy. Sad because of the finality of it. His voice has been silenced. The joy is that the world he left behind and his contribution will be his legacy. Better to have had him then not to have had him here at all. I cannnot imagine a world without GSH. Gil job well done. The Lord will give you the peace you have earned and deserve. RIP.

  • @dennisagis true enough , we always miss the prophets the most he gave us nothing but the truth every time and along the way he gave us a bit of himself !! generous to a fault

  • R.I.P. Gil.An immense loss .

  • RIP Gil, a true renegade. Your lyrics will live on forever xxxx

  • my heart hurts. what a profound man. his death hits me hard.

  • @MrSuzanne88 gil scott heron isnt dead, just the body he lived in

  • @MrSuzanne88 . I know me too. Still playing his recordings. He was so honest. I loved his work!

Went to see him at 19 been listening to him snce I was about 10. No one lives forever even though, we

often think they will. Just miss him so much and never had a thought about him so deeply during his life. You never know how much you will miss someone until they are gone. Rest in Paradise Mr. Heron, you did all you could do.

  • @MrSuzanne88 i share your feelings re gil scott-heron...i was sad when i heard of his passing...i was fortunate to have seen him perform live back in the day...when i was young and was with one of the loves of my life my husband (may his soul rest in peace) he shared the same love of music as i

  • RIP Gil

  • what a dam loss. he's deep.. mad mad poetry

  • @blokeman147 ...My Grandfather is the one who schooled me about him and he was so sad yesterday,he's picking up his spirits now since I talked to him and told him that Mr. Heron is free from his pain and addiction now...Grand Pop laughed and said "I'm the one who is supposed be consoling you",LOL...

  • @blokeman147 ...Have you ever listened to 'Work for Peace"? It's deep too but then again so was all of his music to me...

  • "Home was once my empty vaccum but now filled with my silent screams" thats deep

  • @blokeman147 ...Very Deep!

  • I so relate to this song because someone very closely related to me dealt with an addiction and a profound sadness similar to what Gil Scott-Heron dealt with. He's free now.One must live to die in order to live again.I'm 20 and I so love this deep introspective music. The only person that I feel comes close to Mr. Heron in Hip Hop is Tupac, they both had that passion.I just feel that Gil Scott Heron made music for humanity with a pro Black slant and there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

  • :"(

  • Way better than Kanyes version, although Common killed it!

  • RIP, Gil Scott Heron had the WoW Gene ! I was lucky enough to see him in Philly back in the late 70's and MAN did his poem's (music) wake me up to the reality of the black people, how they are abused, and how they can find LOVE !

  • i love this song

  • iam so upset by him passing... i never met him, nor was i born when he was huge. his music has helped me and its something i cant express enough that he is "da man"

  • @THELOVEHELIX I don't argue about the state of hip hop today. Its not hip hop its corporate branding. However we cannot argue that many of the artists today are noting people like MOST def and Qtip and Bambatta and Tupac and Tribe and Brand Nubian as their influence when those artists were influenced by Gil Scott Heron.

  • @THELOVEHELIX Influence is a domino effect. and srlsy FUCK Eminem. If EMINEM is speaking for recent hip hop then damn, we need to check ourselves.. Further whats out right now is not hip hop. BIG Difference. However, it has been influenced. Hip hop isnt blues, yet has taken from it. AND Kanye DOUCHE just recently noted Gil as being influential on his latest album. Not that I would ever buy it.

  • @THELOVEHELIX People didn't have to be influenced by him directly to have been influenced but influence is a domino effect. Brand Nubian, Mos Def, Qtip, Blackalicious, NWA, Tribe have all noted Gil as influential in their music and have sampled from his work. KMD, Jungle Brothers, Kenny Dope, Tupac, Masta Ace, Lords of the Underground,.Latifah have all taken from his work.

  • @THELOVEHELIX I didn't even hear what Eminem said and he is irrelevant at this point. Speak to the people we consider to be some of the founding artists of hip hop. I don't know where you are from but I'm from New York. Where he lived much of his life and died and you ask anyone here truly rooted in hip hop, they know who Gil is.

  • a man who cared more about the words he said than his standing in some fickle pop chart. greatly missed. one of my heroes. RIP

  • @THELOVEHELIX actually, yes.

  • @THELOVEHELIX actually, yes.

  • So damn good, so, so good. You will be remembered and your music will carry on.

  • NOW Gil will get some love....Now that he's dead.

why does it always have to go down like that?

  • Why are you guy saying he's influencing music today? No no, THIS is music, today's 'rap' is bullshit. Don't disgrace 'em like that.

  • Rest in peace Gil Scott Heron. Such an influence on hip hop today.

  • Brother: You were the Best. The Shit. We Love You.

  • RIP poet. You'll be missed man. I would've loved to catch the new tour.

  • came across this song through kanye sampling it.thanks kanye, reminded me to look properly through gils back catalogue.

    gil scott-heron,you are the man.

  • Loving it man.
