To all you whiners out there: yes this is different from the album version. If you like the album version better, listen to it instead. To me, the reason why Tom is great is because of his ability to breathe new life into songs you've heard a million times. This version is a perfect example.
Get a grip, kids, this was 1977 and the equivalent of a 1959 video of Brubeck or the quintessential tube of Sonny Rollin's St Thomas. I'm a few years younger than Mr. Waits and I've been playing music since I was a wee lad. Tom knows how to swing it , and that's a dying art. Listen carefully to this and the to the original and you'll begin to understand evolution, emotion, life, and soul. Cheers, brothers and sisters.
To bodyheat74 regarding the sax players. Waits' sax man is Frank Vicari (introduced in #14 of this series by the way, it's a great video entitled "Small Change"). Mangione's sax man is Chris Vadala. Both are great players. Though they differ in age by quite a bit. I'm glad you reminded me of Mangione. I'm going to satisfy some nostalgic cravings and listen to him more. His tunes are very good.
how is this embaressing? if you were a singer would you like to play the song the same way over and over again? his style is a rambling style he could be drunk or he could be on nothing at all
Check out the recent Southside Johnny CD "Grapefruit Moon." This tune is covered along with other Waits tunes past and present. Waits does a duet with Southside Johnny on 'Walk Away.' The La Bamba Big Band backs up Southside Johnny, so it really swings, and some of Tom Waits tunes that aren't jazzy on his albums come out sounding jazzy on this collection.
If your talking about the "Elaphant Beer Blues" version of this then I feel Just the opposit I like the crispness and the subtleness in that version. This one is still awesome just not as good as the Elaphant Beer Blues version

Why would anyone complain about that?

This is brilliant...
But, perhaps, not to the kiddies who need to grow up...
Maybe they will appreciate in 30 years...
When they can appreciate that Bob Hughart on bass played with Miles Davis in the 50s?
Perhaps not!!
