I believe kids have a '6th sense' about culture and trends...that being said...I remember watching this as a kid, and comparing Tom Kennedy to Bob Barker, and saying 'this isn't gonna last'. I won't toot my own horn but I guess I was right.
Tom Kennedy does a great job hosting Night Time Price. He's very easy going and very likeable. (BTW, this is one of the last times they use the original any number board.
I never agreed with the "gotta have Bob" line of thinking, but you touched on something with the lack of Showcase Showdown and the 30-minute slot. I think the problem with nighttime versions of TPIR after the daytime expansion is that they just naturally looked inferior as a result.
you have to remember, though, that Bob Barker is maybe the greatest game show host ever, so the nighttime version show was already doomed.....its no wonder the show didnt last long.
But here is what i want to know: On the nighttime version, If all 3 contestants won their pricing games, then how did the show determine which 2 contestants met in the "showcase?"
Tom Kennedy was a fine host, but was more geared toward :"Name that Tune"....The Price is Right....not so much.
@TheOusooner56: strangely enough shortly after this, bob barker did host a nighttime version of tpir, (which took the format of the daytime show) with pricier prizes. barker's version of primetime tpir aired in sporadic spurts on thursday nights during the nielsen sweeps opposite the cosby show...
@headphone355 it wasnt a horrible show...but the show had no showcase showdowns (the wheel) and was only 30 minutes long....tom kennedy wasnt terrible but that show was Bob Barker's....not the same without him
@TheOusooner56 But how would you compare Tom Kennedy with Dennis James (he hosted the original night- time "Price", because Bob was still hosting "Truth or Consequences" in first-run syndication)?
@disneyfan81 never saw or heard of Dennis James, so i cannot really comment.
All i know is having a 30 minute price is right with no showcase showdown was ridiculous. When i think of Tom Kennedy, i think of Name that Tune before anything else.
Yes, Tom Kennedy did do a great job with Hosting the Price is right. What happened to the Night Time series. I remember this being on. I was around 4 years old
I DO like the old style egg-crate numbers, I'm glad they still have those kind of numbers on the readouts on the showcase podiums anyway, and some of the pricing games still have the egg crate style numbers.
Gosh, I loved the old Any Number setup. I grew up watching the red (current) one since kindergarten...that'll tell you how old I am, lol. Anyhow, it will still be an awesome car game no matter what! :-)
OMG! tgt85dc this was NOT Johnny Olson. it was indeed Rod Roddy. Olson died in October of 85. He never announced for the Kennedy TPIR. Gene Wood began with this verson until Roddy was hired to replace Olson on the daytime version.
4 digits in the price of the car..(sigh)...

the way he decribed how to play the game was terrible. If i didn't already know how the game works I would be like WTF?

I couldn't stand the "nighttime version" of the Price is Right..
1) It was only 30 minutes,
2) There was no Showcase "Showdown", so no one got to spin the wheel, and
3) of course, no Bob Barker..thats like having the Rolling Stones without Mick Jagger or Keith Richards!

Same rules as Bob's 30-minute version. The two players who won the most went to the Showcase.

@TheOusooner56 Tom Kennedy held the show down well it made you forget that Bob Barker hosted the show

@ClapHurts Poor Tom. He did a really, really good job on this show, but most people just saw someone other than Bob and tuned TK out.

@mbrooks415 I agree with you i wish we had a host like Tom today to take over Bob spot when he retired instead of Drew.

@TheOusooner56 I kinda loved the nighttime version. I remember seeing reruns of it when I holidayed in Malaysia in the '90s.

Wow, that Girl's got a Booty on her.. Damn. The Joys of Hosting The Price is Right.
During Commerical backstage I would have been spitting some good shit to her and messing her head up with some player stuff.

Well, it could have been worse. She could have won that piggy bank. Believe me, the piggy bank is the worst prize you can win playing Any number.

Almost all the GM cars were styled like that same size back in 1985. Buick, Pontic, Chevrolet, even Cadillac.

1986 was the last year that they used that yellow podium for Any Number before using that round futuristic podium they use now.

The new current set was adopted for the CBS Primetime miniseries after the last of the Narz shows finished taping. It started Season 15.

Actually, Johnny O was the announcer for most of the nighttime series run. Taping began in March 1985, seven months before Johnny's death.

This was from the second syndicated night time version which ran in 1985-86. Tom Kennedy did the hosting.
