  • This my favorite hymn. Excised from our Methodist hynnal,(!) I am very sad, but I'm glad it is on Youtoube at least. I guess "they" figured the Cold War was over, and so, "tossed" the hymn out! - Shame on them! - There are other emenies to worry about!

  • @phoebecatgirl They themselves do not count.

  • Written in protest of the US Mexican-American war.

  • War is Satan's Delight

  • You did an awesome job on this piece!!! Proud to call you brother.

    Semper Fi,

    Taco

  • This song is just so powerful. I remember this in Call of Duty.

  • These are soldiers defending our country, not the military industrial complex. These are citizen soldiers that gave up comfort, the presence, of their families, some their health, some their limbs, and some their lives. Vermin like you are a waste of oxygen. Go to the PRC and enjoy.

  • I first heard the tune in Call of Duty. Then I heard the tune was called Ebenezer. Then I found this. This is awesome.

  • Thank you very much Steeljaw for this amazing rendition of this hymn.

  • Your video is an abomination of the true meaning of this poem.

Clearly you have no idea what these words mean:

Though the cause of evil prosper,

Yet the truth alone is strong,

Though her portion be the scaffold,

And upon the throne be wrong.

The US military industrial complex is on the throne and it is evil.

The truth is spoken by those who oppose this fascist new world order led by men who glory in violence and suffering. Many who speak the truth may face the gallows...but god is watching

  • @AntiNWOMusic god damn it nobody gives a fuck obouth what you say, cant you idiots yust listen to the music, and not post shit like this.

  • @URO006

Some people do give sh!t and its way too important just to be silenced.

I appreciate you'd just like to beat people down and make them shut up but that's exactly what we "idiots" are fighting against.

True freedom means "idiots" like me get their chance to speak up. It also means you get the chance to say your piece which was a little unpleasant and poorly written but you have every right to say it.

This great poem is being abused and I need to say it whether you like it or not.

  • Thumbs up if you don't care about this song being in COD.

  • For Mother Russia comrats! Do not step backward! Traitors and cowards will be shot!

  • for the motherland!(cod 1) and tahts a russian recorded song...

  • @croatian1997

    "russian recorded song"? Hardly.

The words are from a poem written by an American, James Lowell in 1845 and the music was written by Thomas Williams, a Welsh composer, in 1890.

The particular piece used in the video came from a recording of the London Philharmonic Orchestra with the Amen Choir...

    Not a Russian amongst them.

  • "Ebenezer" is indeed a gem from the Episcopal hymnal. JRL writes from a strong Unitarian tradition--back when this denomination was in its prophetic infancy. I heard this hymn first at Riverside; it followed a Sloane Coffin sermon. But I learned the 6th line of the "burning martyrs" verse as "Time makes ancient good uncouth." I feel the awesome burden of the sacrifices made by our soldiers, through the generations. God bless and keep them.

  • this is an awesome hymn. in Greece (where I live - and am from) it is named (translated) : From the blood of your cross.

  • Holy cow!

I really don't want to sound like some juvenille nerd, but I always knew this as the "Russian Theme Song" from Call of Duty. I had no idea that it was actually a real song!

And it's reallybeautiful, too. Thank you for uploading!

  • It's from the old Episcopal Hymnal. Scroll down through the comments and you'll see I left the verses that Steeljaw did not.

  • The hymn tune is called "Ebenezer" and it's of Welsh Origin.

Usually it is played way to fast for my liking. This is the tempo I have always played it at.

Play it on a piano in an empty church and you are in another world.

To me its the most beautiful hymn tune ever composed.

  • Ebenenezer is used with several hymns - Oh the Deep Deep love of Jesus for example. The words were written the Mexican War. The major problem with the Mexican war was that it would exacerbate the Slavery issue and it was a cause of the Civil War. The abolitionists wanted a peaceful solution for slavery, but unfortunately, when 2 groups feel strongly about something and won't compromise - war is the only way. Probably what will happen in the US is a couple years. 2 sides and no compromise.

  • Indeed, it started off as part of the second movement to a Choral Anthem ("Light in the Valley") by the composer Thomas John Williams (1869-1944). It dates from 1890.

I would love to look into this guys work at some stage.

  • Lol same for me. I found this piece and it made my day!

  • My only wish is that there would be no more wars.

  • @ZXUL23 Then you fulfill the most important requirement to compete for the title of Miss Universe ;)

  • great video and music selection. thanks

  • SteelJaw:

Great job! Beautiful! Happy Memorial Day

    Mary

  • Is there a Russian version of this song? I really can't imagine this sung without a Russian chor.

  • For Steeljaw Scribe:

Very nice composition on two of my favorite hymns.

The words for "Once to Every Man and Nation" were written by James R. Lowell (1819-1891) and published in the Boston Courier, December 11, 1845. Lowell wrote the.words as a poem protesting Americas war with Mexico.

  • Love this song.

  • In memory of those who threw their lives away to keep banker's houses in Hamptons, Hallyburton's business in Iraq and Oil as a profitable stuff.

Thanks, u helped then to destroy America's very foundation values...

Sorry, but the only freedom u can find as a soldier is the freedom of the greedy's power.

  • How dramatic you are. And no, I'm not a idiot nor a leftist. What in the world give u the right to decide who must die for the good of mankind? The death of muslim children is fair since it can provide oil for the plastic of ur new PS3? Muslins may be fanatic, but not barbarians. Maybe if the G20 consume just the necessary, oil was a lesser problem. Anyway, you are calling robbery/murder as a right thing and are being selfish enough to judge the future of some nations as whole manking. U sux.

  • How stressed you are. I found in your comments that you are a religious fanatic. How sad, but this explain anything. I shouldn't discuss this anymore. These 7th century barbarians, who took part in the formation of the basis of astrology, navigation, chemistry, metallurgy, etc all deserve to die. They don't have the right to withhold oil. We, truly servants of the Truly God are the rightfully exploiters of the World. We should burn then in the stake to free their souls. God Bless America.

    lol

  • @SturmFuhrerx "Muslims may be fanatic" You pathetic ignorant fuck, I say..

  • @SpitzerYB I don't care =) Did you understand what I mean, dumbass? Point is that waging war against Islam itself is unfair, even if I agree it's a source of evil. If Islam should be destroyed, then Christianity should too. Problem is the fanaticism. Sadly, Islam is a religion where fanaticism is easily reached.

So there's no sense in label ALL Muslim "7th century barbarians who should be destroyed", even thought they are the second biggest threat to my beloved Jewish-Christian culture.

  • @SpitzerYB Islam growth must be stoped. It's being used for communist to crumble the basis of our occidental civilization. But facing the enemy with dumbness and such nonsense views is just pointless and ineffective.

How can you argue against religious fanaticism if you (the guy who called them barbarians, not you) are one of them?

I was just trying to clarify things in order to face it with true arguments.

So before calling me "pathetic ignorant fuck", think twice, moron.

  • @SturmFuhrerx I'm not against all u have saying but this vid is well made and the text of this vid is good! It s why i ve voted for and against!

  • Outstanding video

  • haha, you put "eternal father strong to save" after the end of "once to every man and nation"

    gg, good video

  • anglicansag - Thanks for posting the additional verses. This has always been one of my favorites - as it was in the old Episcopal church I grew up in...

    - SJS

  • Thank you for this Breathtaking Video.

As the son of a valiant veteran of the Pacific Theater during World War II it has poignant resonance for me.

I've taken the liberty of providing the lyrics for the other three verses..... all equally apt. Character count required I submit them separately though in order.

This was a Hymn in the Episcopal Hymnal of 1940. It was removed by the Church in 1982. An egregious decision and one I will always regret.

    The Naval Hymn, fittingly, remains.

  • Then to side with Truth is Noble,

When we share her wretched crust,

Ere her cause bring fame and profit

    And 'tis prosperous to be just;

Then it is the brave man chooses,

    While the coward stands aside

    Till the multitude make virtue

Of the faith they had denied.

  • By the light of burning martyrs

Christ thy bleeding feet I track,

    Toiling up new Calvaries ever

    With the cross that turns not back;

    New occasions teach new duties,

    Time makes ancient good uncouth;

They must upward still and onward

Who would keep abreast of Truth.

  • Though the cause of evil prosper,

    Yet "tis truth alone is strong;

Though her portions be the scaffold,

And upon the throne is wrong,

Yet that scaffold sways the future,

    And, behind the dim unknown,

    Standeth God within the shadow

    Keeping watch above His own. ✙ ✙ ✙ ✙ ✙ ✙ ✙ ✙

  • amazing, just amazing, this song is perfect, the pictures, everything, i congratulate those who made this, you do your country proud

  • "Everyone to change his blood with me.. will be my brother"

  • Astonishing.

  • Wow. Just wow.

  • one of my favorite songs
