He says that to let the audience have a chance to laugh. No one would catch what he was saying if he just kept on going. Its also a way of telling people that there is hidden humour in what he's just said. Not everyone is a brainbox.
I went to see Al in Leeds a few weeks ago, he was amazing. One of my favourite comedians for sure.
