  • doest a clogged convertor cause backpressure?

  • $70 for a converter and maybe an hour to replace. I had one fall off a GEO in CA and a muffler shop removed it and patched it up with pipe, I had Illinois plates so I wasn't registered there.

  • the car runs rich it uses more gas and eats up the inside

  • so how does this happen and what are the signs? im asking so i know in the future.

  • is that lead

  • THE HIGH COST OF PAYING EVERYTHING JUST TO KEEP MY BABY HEALTHY( MY CAR )

  • Straight dumps off the headers to the side, like Nascar. . .Ya!

  • catawata? use straight pipes :D

  • 2 cats?! Fuck that! Decat the bitch!!

  • What cause the converter to go bad ?? Most vehicles that I see that have a bad converter have a bad head gaskets letting the antifreeze from the cooling system enter into the exhaust system. This is due to the antifreeze turning into an acid an eating them up.

  • And that folks is why I only have pre 80's cars that do not require cats don't want them never liked them. Oh and a engine does not always cause a converter to go bad ya know age can too.

  • @dunn98632 many pre 80 cars here have catalytic converters except the Honda cvcc. which was only sold in California. the life span of a cat also varies as well. many cars destined for sale at that time have an emissions label stating that the vehicle " for sale to the state of California only'. we cannot use any generic parts on the emission system. but we do have a long warranty that covers the emission system for 7 to 8 years.

  • @98770

I did not say they didn't have them did I. I merely said they do not require them anymore as there passed a certain age and in most all places consider omitted from DEQ. And you are incorrect 1973 and up passerger vehicles had cats depending on engine type not all did and almost all trucks until 1979 were omitted as well. know your old rigs man.

  • @dunn98632 I did not say all vehicles didn't have them. I should only state to the vehicles that are sold in California. the Honda stratified charge engine did not have one. butyou are right depending on the engine. but it depends where you are from. where I live its a 30 year time frame. 1976 and later need to be tested. but 1975 and older are exempt from emissions.Different states have different laws & rules. the calif car market was separate from the rest of the country.

  • go catless!! fuck the laws

  • @Bryanx89 or go vintage cars ;)

  • @Bryanx89 thats why i dive cars under 95 lol

  • @satinsk8er im not old school, i like new cars

  • @Bryanx89 and the health of other people...

  • @Bryanx89 It's not about the laws, it's about the environment.

  • @MrNofreedom as I said in the first point.. fuck the laws. its illegal to go catless, there's alot more ways to help the environment besides change your cat.. how about don't drive at all but most people are to dependant on there cars, wouldn't bus or walk or bike.

  • @Bryanx89 Up until 2007, there were no emission standards for diesels. Driving one bus equals driving 8 cars. Understand what you are talking about before you talk.

  • too much oil consumption

  • rich fuel condition or excessive lean

  • u should include the approx bill for replacing two cats...ouch! lol

  • I heard that changing out the cat will help pass smog is there any truth to this?

  • @MrContinuance Of course, but only if they need changed.

  • Bad o2's. throwing lean codes? Could that cause my cats to burn up?

  • @papacassidy yes, because when you o2 throws lean codes you ecm adds to much fuel and a rick condition will clog a cat

  • how did those stones come in there?

  • @Dualshock21 that is the material that make a cat a cat man. it takes the gases and at a certain temperature that material turns the gas into water

  • Can you just soak that cat in carb cleaner to get that carbon off of it? Its just a physical blockage right?

  • how often ford f150 cats go bad ? mine got misfire issues. Low vacuum, 12 in hg running weaker than a 4 cylinders.

  • What could be wrong with the engine that would make a cat go bad faster than normal?

  • @CarbineGuy Depends on the car but these issues usually happen with engines that have COP (coil on plug) such as Lincoln's because the coil packs tend to go bad and when they do the gas starts getting burned inside the cat converter rather than the cylinders which causes them to get clogged.

Check your spark plugs, coil packs, or whatever your car creates spark with and that's usually the first thing you should look at. In my opinion at least.

  • @CarbineGuy BTW.... lots of times people drive on bad coil packs or spark plugs either because they are lazy, can't afford to get it fixed, or don't actually know anything about cars to realize they are bad. But if your engine starts to misfire even the slightest bit or has a rough idle then it's definitely something you should check. They should be checked even if you don't have these symptoms. Probably once every 6 months or so.

  • why are all scrap or salvage stores people obsessed with the catalytic converters ? I was selling an old car and everyone one of them asked only two questions ( make sure to have the cars title and it comes with a complete catalytic converter ) , he wasn't worried about the engine or gear or how many miles i had . could you please explain ?

  • @randomvidz94

    1. they have platnium in them witch is expensive and is worth some money when melted from the cat

    2. not having a cat is illegal, and to swith the title over in some states do emision testing

it is also a big fine to not have one.

  • @loadedlover12 oh ok , so they either dont care about the car and just want the CAT to melt and sell or they just want to make sure they wont have any legal issues if they sell the car later on .. so it goes both ways.

  • @randomvidz94 Well its mostly because its illegal to not have one, They call it "tampering with emissions". And some car's are equiped with two cat converters.

But on all most all automobiles, that im aware of, the cat converter connects to the end of the header, so where ever your header ends thats the most likley place to find it.

  • @loadedlover12 thanks !

  • @loadedlover12 another question , is the CAT converter always in the center or could it be also located toward the end where the mufflers come out at the end of the car ?

  • @randomvidz94 Diesel vehicles will sometimes put a cat toward the end of the exhaust, but every car I've seen (ASE certified) has the cat close to the engine. With gasoline hydrocarbon conversion heat aids the process, and thisis why your typical vehicle has them close to the engine.

  • Thank you so much Ripley, I am going to gut my downpipe as a cheap fix for now to see why my car isn't boosting. I am going to get a new engine in it anyways, but I do hear a rattle in my exhaust as well.. I am 100% certain this is probably what it is.
