  • Wow! Very nice.

  • Heard this on the radio, thought it was rad.

Coming from a kid who listens to death metal.

  • This is Truly Excellent

  • how does he nail all those leaps being blind?!?! i like this guy

  • omg hes a machine

  • He's even flattening his hands out like Monk, but it doesn't seem forced. More than just a technician, there is definitely some emotional channeling here!

  • @54mwi53 of course...roberts would have no idea how monk's hands looked, being blind and all

  • Gifted!!!

  • wonderful

  • i think it´s a precious performance

  • Great imitation of a true genius: Thelonius Monk, but where's Roberts? I'm not much of a fan, but this is decent. I'm afraid Roberts in his early years hasn't got much of his own voice and when he did later, it was clunky, dissonant and not very interesting to me. I don't think he can swing at all.

  • @Darrylizer1 please direct me to an example of what you are saying about this being an imitation, cos i don't remember hearing these rhythmic concepts in monks music

  • someone here is obviously musically retarded smh

  • wo 4:50 mintues later ow!

  • one person here obviously has no ears.

  • @alexttt342 i know right!!! clearly they CANNOT hear!! this dude is one of my influences!!!! a beast!!

  • Fantastic!

  • hell they should package these as a DVD box set, the complete series. Not only did the show have an incredible array of highest quality musicians from diverse fields, but it had the audacity, to pair them for amazing one of a kind performances. PLease someone put these on dvd before they are lost forever. From living legends like Sonny Rollins, Mauvis Staples, Eddie Palmieri, Milton Nascimento, Yomo Toro, Dizzy and on and on.

The hippest show to ever appear on Network TV.

  • I saw Marcus live a couple of month ago. I hadn't heard of him for that time, but I got really impressed. Now he's one of my favourite pianists

  • I don't like to swear on the internet, so I will simply say holy f*****' s***, is this guy good. His first recording was called Deep In The Woodshed, and that explains the deep dedication he has to music.

  • Excellent!! He's one of my favorites.

Especially love his rendition of Waller's

    Jitterbug Waltz...

  • is he blind?

  • @busessuck1 Yep. Since birth.

  • Awesome!!!!

  • ENORME ! <3

  • The way he twists and turns with the rhythm around 2.40 is nothing less than amazing. :-)

  • he does a lot for jazz education, my school group saw him at the Swing Central competition.

Marcus Printup, Wycliffe Gordon and he played Amazing Grace in the most incredible musical experience i"ve ever been a part of.

  • SENSACIONAL!!!QE video!!!Blue Monk .Jazz,Incrivélll*****!!!

  • He can't replicate monk's rhythm tho

  • He teaches at FSU btw 8)

  • @TraeBudde yeah i met him hes a nice guy

  • @sean33313 Me too!

  • Marcus is awesome....he seems to be able to do whatever he sets his mind to. Incredible. :-)

  • Just saw him today at the Clearwater Jazz Festival! Jaw dropping prodigy!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hey! I am writing a report on this event and was wondering if you remember what they were wearing. Was it a 70's leisure suit or a suit and tie? I also wanted to know if they each played solos?

  • He's great alive! (Marciac 2009). Pure - genious!

  • felonious thunk .. luv this bambino

  • u mean thelonius monk? XD

  • Monker than Monk!

  • nice stride jumps with the left, considering hes blind

  • God, I miss the David Sanborn show!!! I remember seeing this when it aired on Sunday nites, about 20 years ago!!! They should rerun these shows!!!

  • I agree!

  • if u like him listen to some Art Tatum... u wont regret it

  • awesome, indeed! how does he do it? fats waller meets monk

  • This is more pure monk, monk was a stride pianist in his earlier years and his solo version of this very similar. Roberts even gets monks touch down exactly, like the dry tremolo at the end.

  • I was about to say the same thing, but to resemble Fats Waller better the stride part should have been played in 10th chords I guess.

Anyway I must say that I can´t believe my ears.

    Another YouTube jewel.

    Gus.

  • he teaches at fsu where I'm at! ^_^ He also occassionaly plays out at the warehouse. It's a jazz\blues jam on Monday nights. It's an open jam session, great atmosphere, lots of top notch players. Seen him in person a couple times, totally rules

  • I saw him Friday night at a local bar. Beautiful stuff. He's the greatest jazz pianist alive as far as I'm concerned.

  • yes he is blind and he is Awesome. I have three of his recordings, all great.

  • hie is unnelievable,what talent

  • such a talented guy!

  • The way he twists and turns the rhythm on this performance is absolutely breathtaking! Truly a genius!!!

  • Is he blind. just asking, because he laways has the glasses on, just was wondering. This has no bearing on my thoughts of his playing. I htin he is a fantastic pianist

  • yes

  • i like those Ragtime elements in it :)

  • lot of stride going on there

  • Should listen to his Joy of Joplin album

  • I am astonished! This man is one of Gods' many wonders.

  • giant of music. he is best served solo. and he knows it. thelonius would have to agree that this man does his music justice.

  • hey marcus , you still got it.

    nicole

  • Angular genius!

    Itzik Basman

  • Does anyone have St Louis Blues by Marcus Roberts?! Let me know if you do!

    Thanks

  • This is a great combo tune

  • Um, Robbie: There are lots of great blind piano players. Christ, Art Tatum was legally blind. Any great piano player knows how to play "blind" anyway.

  • I saw this guy live in Chicago a few weeks ago. The man is absolutely incredible live with his trio called "The Marcus Roberts Trio". Unbelievable music that rivaled the abilities of Ray Charles. This song is crap compared to what he displayed in Chicago.

  • Did you know this guy is actually blind? And He's playing in STRIDE!!!

  • I think the excuse of "blindness" for musicians is overrated. I think most professional musicians will agree that being blind actually improves yourself as a musician because you are FORCED to use your ears. But this is not to say people who play music should cut their eyes. The only difficulty of being blind and learning music is playing the actual intrument itself in the beginning

  • 'Alone With Three Giants' is one of my favorite albums. This song isn't on it, but it would fit in perfectly with the 6 other solo Monk tunes. Good music.

  • how tall is this dude he hhas huge hands
