You do not need the magnesium bar to light the fire you made. The vasoline is enough with a flint. In fact if you soak cotton balls in vasoline you will not need the magnesium at all. Try it and see that I am right. I have soaked and stored in a plastic bag 400 cotton balls.

This guy keeps talking about starting a fire with magnesium when it's obvious that the only thing needed is the flint and paper. just a few things... number one its PURE magnesium alloy. number two this is a good way to educate others on firestarting. and three. number two was a compliment. ps. 100% pure magnesium will catch fire in moist air so not good idea to carry not to mention that it has to be carried in mineral oil.....
Although 100% pure Magnesium will oxidise readily in air dry or moist. It most certainly will not spontaneously ignite. It also does not react violently with water so you do not have to carry it in mineral oil. You are mistaking this metal for something like Potassium, caesium or maybe Francium.
The bar would burn but it would have such a high thermal mass that you would have to heat the whole bar up with something like a gas cutting torch first.
Hey, if you put that piece of magnesium near the fire or put a piece of sparkle near, can it ignite and start burning like crazy?! My flint is stuck to my magnesium piece, should i unstick them or can i keep then together?
@akaTheDevil as ive told ppl b4, i just ordered this and ive had experience using this, you have to shave it into fine powder, it wont ignite in block form, glad to help :D
