It is the CONDUCTOR that doesn't understand the music. The kids are playing exactly what he is conducting. Too bad. Its probably one of the best pieces written for band- ever. I had the priviledge of playing under Dr. Harry Begian when this piece was debuted. Tokyo Kosai Winds is a better rendition.... but nothing compares to Dr. Begian's interpretation.
yes, it is a 5/8 section. I also agree that the section was played way too fast. For their age, these performers have tremendous talent. It is just the conductors fault for a bad interpretation. That's all.
@Samwerd2 Have you LOOKED at the score? This guys tempo is perfect. 5/8 sounds soo goooood. Bad interpretation my foot, it's supposed to sound LIVELY.
oh yeah duh oops. I meant 5/8. 2/8 3/8, 3/8 2/8 pattern specifically. but yeah they should use the tempo it is supposed to be. If they want to just show off, they can play a different piece
That may be why the low brass sounds absolutely terrible, but the piece is played without good dynamics, or articulation. The 5/4 section is played too fast, for them, and for the piece. The last section is not supposed to be all loud anyway. It really ruins it.
It will be no different when we Armenians play a Japanese music - it takes time to learn and then it takes longer to understand how to play it and finally play it like it suppose to be played... nice effort.
nice job rushing through the 5/8 section... did the musical director realize that this piece is supposed to be a collection of dances? sorry, but it's just way off in the artistic element. not very much emotion, this band needs to just mellow out a bit.
This is a great piece but I feel that the musicians in this weren't very interested in this and couldn't grasp the emotion taking place. Dynamics weren't great, and the overall balance of the band was highly disproportionate.
have u been inside a jap band? if u have not, pls dont anyhow talk.
they don memorise them, they practice so much till it gets stucked in their head.
gosh u noobs. just because its not at the original tempo=rush? they just tried displaying it in another style. can a style be wrong? its like do u like pink or blue, oh u like blue, thats wrong?
though they're not of a standard such as USA navy bands and stuff, i think they did xtremely well for a high sch.
Japanese bands are among the best in the world, having such high standards and musicality that others can only dream of. I myself personally prefer the Japanese take to music and their styles, than their Western counterparts, that's of course not saying that the others are lousy or whatnot. Just a preference.
yes just like the Tokyo Kosei Wind Band!! but japanese bands often lack emotions in their performance, what really makes them so amazing are their rhythmicality and their dynamics they play right the way the compoeser wants it to be played. but again just preference
I beg to differ. If you ask me, it's usually the Japanese who make better quality music than their Western counterparts. What their peers in the west can do, they usually can do it way better. And it has nothing to do with the way the composer, every conductor has his own different style and that usually affects the outcome of the music. It is how they use their technical and expressive skills together with the conductor's flair for that particular piece that brings out the colour of the piece.
i was discussing a different song... i was just pointing something out. ok... imagine this. a section of clarinets... all swaying in the SAME direction... all at the SAME time... doesn't that look just a little rehearsed to you? like i understand one here and there swaying to the music... but all at once? come on...

Western music and composers win... Japanese assimilate. That is because the wonderful invention of non-folk music that classic music is. Anyways my high school played this better. They have a lot of mistakes. This isn't one of those crazy good japp bands.
The recording wasn't fabulous... I'm sure live it was much better. I'm currently working on this piece now in my own university Wind Ensemble- it is not easy. The parts are not particularily difficult to learn, but it is difficult to piece together. There were a lot of great things happening- all the soloists did a great job. The ensemble has a great full sound.
I think with better recording equipment, this would sound a lot better.
oh really? did the high schools play with perfect intonation and were all the parts being played as well as this and to such a professional level? If you would be kind as to point me towards a recording, I may believe you when i hear it.
i Lovee This ''Song''. When i was in summer music camp we pLayed this song. It is noT easy. we Learned iT in 5 days [ with 7-9 hours of individual class and 6 hours or less with orcestra.] iT wasnT easy. buT the song is lovely.^^ i like it very much.
@proud2beanerd - on my notes is written 1,2/1,2,3 1,2,3/1,2 Oo noT 5/8 or i dont know what you mean.^^
omg, they are so great. I'm a student of this high school and in band club actually, but this concert was probably held 18 years ago. this is 14th and this year's 36th, so ya, 18 yrs ago. I was not even born at this time!lol amazing work.
Oops - oh well, I guess the doctorate degree that I have in conducting blinded me to the incredibly clear pattern that this conductor is giving.... :)
Armenia loves Japan! <3

lol you guys need to give it a break. You guys are critiquing a band of young kids as if they're a professional band lol.

How you play matters. How well you play matters.
But you can be the best in the world at music... but if there's no passion, you may as well be blowing hot air.

This piece is highly focused on the oboist/English Horn, but it seems that the camera man would rather focus on the french horns and clarinets.

Just watch Armenian Dance Part 1(A Reed) B to see how the 5/4 section is supposed to be. The director just messed the piece over. That is all

i completely agree with you. i dont want to come off like a hard as* but i think its a 5/8 section as i read your other comments taht also said 5/4

They have little dynamics and no style. That is why there is no emotion. High school doesn't excuse lack of dynamics and bad style.

the recording quality here is very low, thats why it sounds so bad

well, since they are the japanese bands, most of them have very good posture, technique everything, except the passion.
for example, a japanese band made of grade 6's had all 4 movements of puszta memorized.

Exactly. I agree completely with you
